Jimmy Iovine: Building Interscope Records & Beats by Dre Hotney 7 Streams • 9 months ago

Jimmy Iovine is the co-founder of Interscope Records, Beats by Dre, and the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy. Iovine is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the modern music industry.

Growing up in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, Iovine was raised in an Italian working-class family. He began working as a recording engineer in the early 1970s, and went on to engineer landmark albums including Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run and John Lennon's Rock 'n' Roll and Walls and Bridges, before transitioning into production with Patti Smith's Easter, Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedoes, Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna, and U2's Rattle and Hum.

In 1990, Iovine co-founded Interscope Records with Ted Field. Under his leadership, the label became one of the most dominant forces in popular music, launching or elevating the careers of Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar. He rose to become chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records. In 2006, he and Dr. Dre co-founded Beats by Dre, which Apple acquired in 2014 for $3 billion — the largest acquisition in Apple's history at the time. Iovine subsequently helped launch Apple Music in 2015 before departing Apple in 2018.

His accomplishments include being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 with the Ahmet Ertegun Award, being honored by the Recording Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing during Grammy Week 2012, co-founding the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy in 2013 with a $70 million donation alongside Dr. Dre, launching the Iovine and Young Center high school program in Los Angeles in 2022 with additional locations in Atlanta and Inglewood, and donating to the city of Compton during the COVID-19 pandemic to fund medical supplies, testing, and meals for residents.

We have finally brought one of our most requested artists to the Tiny Desk: Jill Scott! "I thought about you so much," Scott tells the audience. "I was, like, 'One day, Imma be on Tiny Desk!' " In celebration of her new album, To Whom This May Concern, her first in just over a decade, the Philadelphia poet shares some new music along with the classics we've been yearning for.

Most Jill Scott fans know that her albums are gateways to the live show. For over 25 years, the stage has been where she displays her true artistry as a natural-born performer. Every note and every lyric is sold — sometimes powerful and sometimes gentle, but always with a smile. Which is why she stresses before and after the show that this is "live music," and these mics aren't for decoration. As a songwriter, her ability to write for Black women and to Black men has amassed a loyal following, allowing her to sell out shows, whether she has something new to sell or not.

Draped in a dress with patterns that match her colorful and limitless vocal ability, she starts off with "A Long Walk," from her groundbreaking debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, adding a subtle nod to the late D'Angelo. The new songs, "Beautiful People" and "Don't Play," are as soulful and sultry as anything in her catalog, but everything reaches a proper climax with a version of "The Way" that made the hair on my arms stand up. Jilly from Philly's Tiny Desk is here, and it's exactly what we've been waiting for.

British trio FLO crossed the pond for its Tiny Desk debut in Washington, D.C. So we got V.I.P. access to Club FLO courtesy of Stella Quaresma, Reneé Downer and Jorja Douglas, complete with disco balls, martinis, a custom marquee and subtle Easter eggs tucked between the shelves for sharp-eyed fans. Still, none of the glam outshines what matters most: their harmonies.

They open with a new take on their debut single, "Cardboard Box," immediately reminding us of the chemistry that launched them. We witness their sister-like energy as they laugh, banter and dance their way through several songs from the Grammy-nominated album, Access All Areas.

FLO delivers sultry standouts — "AAA" and "On & On" — and shares stories of relationship woes with "Get It Till I'm Gone" and "Shoulda Woulda Coulda." The trio closes with two unreleased tracks, "Therapy at the Club" and "HaterBooth," hinting at what's next. The set makes clear that their next chapter will double down on powerful vocals, sisterhood and a confidence sharpened by a clear understanding of exactly what they're capable of.
