Babyface: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 6 Streams • 3 years ago

NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Nikki Birch | June 9, 2023
I was working late when Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds first arrived at the office to rehearse for his Tiny Desk concert. Within moments, it was clear it would be an exceptional performance. The next day, my colleagues waited patiently to see the legendary singer, songwriter and producer. Because when it comes to matters of the heart, Babyface has turned our angst, our triumphs, our devastation, into timeless love songs that have scored the romances of more than one generation.

Joined by top-tier talent — Tank, Chanté Moore and Avery Wilson — Babyface came out swinging. From the songs that put him on the map, to those he wrote or produced for other icons, around the room hit after hit was met with swoons, sighs and not a few tears. (Ok, maybe that was just me.)

Babyface is a titan of the music industry: with numerous top 10 hits, 12 Grammys (50 nominations) and a jaw-dropping roster of collaborations. In 2022, he assembled a stellar ensemble of women for one of my favorite albums of the year, Girls Night Out. To watch this master of pen and sound behind the Tiny Desk was truly epic and nothing short of a dream come true.

Ooh, ooh, no, no
NLE the Top Shotta

Posted, in front of the trap
Selling dope, 'till the sun come down
Take a fuck nigga right off the map
When I hit him, with this whole hundred rounds
Young joc, in the club, with my Glock
You want to play and then this bitch going down
We ain't hesitatin', bullets get to blazin'
Imma lay him down like he in the lounge

Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down

Walk down on 'em in Balenciaga runners
My blood, slime a nigga out, just like a anaconda
You go against me, then you fuck, just like a used condom
I roll 'em up, and then I smoke 'em, like some good ganja
Ay, still doing drive-bys, but I want to walk 'em
If I can't find 'em, you know I'm gonna stalk 'em
Caution tape up on the scene, I had to white chalk 'em
Running from my gun, but my bullets had to hawk 'em

Posted, in front of the trap
Selling dope, till the sun come down
Take a fuck nigga right off the map
When I hit him, with this whole hundred rounds
Young joc, in the club, with my Glock
You want to play, and then this bitch going down
We ain't hesitatin' bullets get to blazin'
Imma lay him down like he in the lounge

Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down

Nigga, I was posted on the corner, where the jays at
Roll up in the four by four, pull at the corner store
And I got red in my drink, when I pour up soda
I remember praying that the feds never take the Motorola
Choppa got the choppa, make 'em do a backflip
Pay my dog a dime to walk him down, he need the racks bitch
I've been drinkin, I been taking all this codeine to the face
Got a lot of m's in the safe
Caught a murder, then I beat the case
I was just about to do the race

Posted, in front of the trap
Selling dope, till the sun come down
Take a fuck nigga right off the map
When I hit him, with this whole hundred rounds
Young joc, in the club, with my Glock
You want to play, and then this bitch going down
We ain't hesitatin' bullets get to blazin'
Imma lay him down like he in the lounge

Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down
Walk 'em down

LYRICS:
A minor inconvenience or a catastrophe
Even if I could get there on my own
It wouldn’t be free
It’s already coming so why don’t you pry it loose
Everything’s a choice babe
So why don’t you just choose

‘Cuz it’s always something
Right when you’re gunning
For the finish line
I’ve been here before
And I did something awful
But now I’m out of lies

How many times have you said that it’s never too late
What about a heartbreak
What about the end of the day
Can’t spend my life sitting around and filling up an ashtray
Cuz nothing’s ever gonna change
Now I gotta toothache

Now that I’ve cobbled together the dominos
I wanna watch em explode
Yeah I really wanna let go
But I find myself hyper focused on the dirty windows
And running out of dish soap
Cuz it’s different all on my own

Cuz I’m always shooting for high fallutin
And then I fuckin choke
And it’s not that I’m losing
I just keep using the only way I know

How many times have you said that it’s never too late
What about a heartbreak
What about the end of the day
Don’t wanna tow the line just to spin out on the freeway
Cuz now there’s nothing left to save
Now I gotta toothache
Now I gotta headache

How many times have you said that it’s never too late
What about a heartbreak
What about the end of the space
Don’t wanna spend my whole life trying to get out of my own way
Cuz now there’s nothing left to change
Now I gotta toothache
Now I got a heartache coming on
Now I got a headache coming on

LYRICS
Today I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything.

Uh!
I'm gonna kick my feet up
Then stare at the fan
Turn the TV on, throw my hand in my pants
Nobody's gonna tell me I can't

I'll be lounging on the couch,
Just chillin' in my snuggie
Click to MTV, so they can teach me how to dougie
'Cause in my castle I'm the freaking man

Oh, yes I said it
I said it
I said it 'cause I can

Today I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything

Nothing at all!
Ooh, hoo, ooh, hoo, ooh, ooh-ooh
Nothing at all
Ooh, hoo, ooh, hoo, ooh, ooh-ooh

Tomorrow I'll wake up, do some P90X
Meet a really nice girl, have some really nice sex
And she's gonna scream out: 'This is Great' (Oh my God, this is great)
Yeah

I might mess around, get my college degree
I bet my old man will be so proud of me
But sorry pops, you'll just have to wait
Haha

Oh, yes I said it
I said it
I said it 'cause I can

Today I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything

No, I ain't gonna comb my hair
'Cause I ain't going anywhere
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I'll just strut in my birthday suit
And let everything hang loose
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Ooh
Today I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything

Nothing at all
Nothing at all
Nothing at all
