James Blood Ulmer, born on February 2, 1942, in St. Matthews, South Carolina, is a distinguished musician whose innovative fusion of jazz and blues has left an indelible mark on the world of contemporary music. Known for his unique guitar style and raw, emotional vocals, Ulmer has been a pioneer in pushing the boundaries of traditional genres. Ulmer's journey in the world of music began at a young age when he picked up the guitar and started playing in gospel and R&B bands. He moved to New York City in the early 1970s, where he became an essential part of the city's avant-garde jazz scene. It was here that he earned the nickname "Blood" due to his habit of playing with great intensity and passion. One of James Blood Ulmer's defining contributions to music is his innovative approach to the guitar. He developed a distinctive style that combined elements of free jazz, blues, and funk, often using open tunings and unconventional techniques to create a sound that was both soulful and avant-garde. His guitar work was characterized by its raw power and emotional depth, making him a highly sought-after collaborator with artists across various genres. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Ulmer released a series of groundbreaking albums, including "Tales of Captain Black" and "Odyssey," which showcased his unique fusion of jazz and blues. Throughout his career, James Blood Ulmer collaborated with renowned musicians such as Ornette Coleman and David Murray. This song was performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival on July 9th, 1983 at the Garden Pavilion.

In an era where it was common practice for white artists like Peggy Lee and Pat Boone to take songs from the black artists and make cover songs, Berry Gordy’s mission was to challenge the status quo by putting the black artists on the map, a move which looked and seemed impossible. The Trench Coat Museum, recorded live at our triumphant, festival stealing show at Primavera Sound, Barcelona.
As we hope anyone who has listened to our records and seen our live show will attest; the rules of one do not dictate the other. And so, despite many tireless hours spent glued to screens and machines making The Trenchcoat Museum record, the live version adheres very little to the features and form of its recorded counterpart.
Sam gets to flex the psych-rock muscles of his salad days. Chris kind of plays some hammond-style organ, and James simply prats about on a big calculator. Jay and Ry groove out as humans do, rather than replicate the robots on the record. It's a joy to play it live, to relish in its open-endedness.
Trenchcoat can be whatever it wants to be live. This is a document of where it was at then, which is not where it's at now.
