Víkingur Ólafsson: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 6 vistas • 3 años hace

Tom Huizenga | March 28, 2024
Top-tier concert pianists commonly perform on nine-foot grand pianos. However, when they visit the Tiny Desk, it's our job to convince them to scale down to our diminutive upright. We got no argument from Víkingur Ólafsson, the 40-year-old star pianist from Iceland.

His eyes lit up when he saw our instrument. He immediately removed its upper panel, then secured the practice pedal, which drops a curtain of felt between the hammers and the strings, producing a muted, intimate sound, allowing the music to be practically whispered to us.

The pieces Ólafsson chooses are gentle, and for him nostalgic, recalling the countless hours spent at his own upright piano in his childhood bedroom.

J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations is "an encyclopedia of how you can think and dream on the keyboard," Ólafsson says, after opening with the work's featherlight Aria and vigorous first variation. His phrasing is warm and lilting, and as detailed as a Vermeer.

Ólafsson is also a gifted arranger. His rendition of an interlude from Jean-Philippe Rameau's 1763 opera Les Boréades unspools as a calm procession. Ólafsson titled it "The Arts and the Hours" because, he says, "art is long and life is short."

Filtered through Béla Bartók, Three Hungarian Folksongs from Csík have been part of Ólafsson's repertoire since childhood. The wistful melodies and tangy harmonies are irresistible. And Ólafsson closes with another personal arrangement, "Ave María," something close to Iceland's national prayer.

The pianist insisted on placing our grumpy-looking Bach bobblehead on the piano for companionship, joking that the frowning little toy "seems permanently displeased with everything I do." But judging from this performance, and his wise words, Ólafsson is doing everything just right.

SET LIST
J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations - Aria, Variation No. 1
Jean-Philipe Rameau (arr. Ólafsson): "The Arts and the Hours"

Lyrics
LOSING YOU

Baby, I keep on losing you
You got somewhere that you run to
Baby, I lost you in the shadow
You go somewhere I cannot follow

You’ll see
You’re doing it for me
It’s your call
Keeping it to yourself
And I’d be over the moon
If you told me where I
I could find you

Baby no matter what you do
There’s always somewhere we can run to
Baby, I lost you in the shadow
You go somewhere

You’ll see
You’re doing it for me
It’s your call
Keeping it to yourself
And I’d be over the moon
If you told me where I
I could find you

I’ve been waiting up all night
Reading books but I don’t read a word my mind is on you
Stories of how I might find you
I’ve been waiting up all night
Walking laps around the room where I used to know ya
Thinking of ways I could show ya that…

Baby, I keep on losing you
You got somewhere that you run to
Baby, I lost you in the shadow
You go somewhere I cannot follow

I cannot follow
I cannot follow
I wanna follow

Canción: Mayor de Edad
Artista: La Original Banda El Limón
Autor: José Luis Roma
Album: Medio Siglo

Letra:
De lejos te vi y pensé
qué mujer, qué hermosa está
de cerca amé tu cintura
y me engañaba tu labial

Y si yo tan solo tuviera unos años menos

Y si yo tan solo tuviera unos años menos

Y si yo tan solo tuviera unos años menos

Y si yo tan solo tuviera unos años menos

Lyrics:

Rationalize
Mix truth with lies
It’s all black magic
Mixed with bad habits
Oh, isn’t it tragic

I’m a patient
Going apeshit
On the fourth floor
In the psych ward
I’ve been baptized
Franchised
Americanized
And I’m left here wondering why

I built my house on sand
Hoping it would stand
The storms that come my way
And now I’m left to face
The weight of my mistakes
And a chance to start again

Oh, oh
Build my life again

I’m compromised
Wage war on my mind
Feels good on the dark side
It’s all black magic
Mixed with bad habits
Oh, isn’t it tragic

I’m a patient
Going apeshit
On the fourth floor
In the psych ward
I’ve been baptized
Franchised
Americanized
Left here wondering why

I built my house on sand
Hoping it would stand
The storms that come my way
And now I’m left to face
The weight of my mistakes
And a chance to start again

Oh, oh
Build my life again
Oh, oh
Build my life again

Hey

I’m a patient
Going apeshit
I’m a monster
An outsider
It’s all bullshit
It’s all bullshit
It’s all bullshit

Tear it down

Oh, isn’t it tragic

Oh, oh
Build my life again

I built my house on sand
Hoping it would stand
The storms that come my way
And now I’m left to face
The weight of my mistakes
And a chance to start again

Oh, oh
Build my life again
Oh, oh
Build my life again

Build my life again
Build my life again
Build my life again
