Bob Boilen | January 3, 2023

Surely my musical highlight for 2022 was this Tiny Desk concert from The Smile. Just how Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner were going to perform songs from their sonically adventurous album A Light for Attracting Attention was a puzzle not only to me but to the band. They arrived early, along with saxophonist Robert Stillman, to test out several tunes and figure out just what made sense behind my desk — minus the volume and effects that shape the album's sonic landscape. For roughly 90 minutes, the Tiny Desk crew was treated to a casual rehearsal, witnessing the band's creative companionship work itself out, settling on four songs.

I generally crank up the volume when I listen to The Smile, but as the band settled into the opening song, "Pana-vision," Thom Yorke's fingers gently stroking the piano keys with his voice not much louder, I was drawn in; the mood felt simultaneously mysterious and welcoming with the bass, sax and drums punctuating the now surreal atmosphere.

For keen eyes, you'll see Thom Yorke being handed a guitar for the second tune but all of a sudden he's playing bass while Jonny Greenwood's bass is suddenly a guitar. They had recorded another tune before "The Smoke," but it didn't make the final cut; they weren't happy with their performance. The set ends with my favorite song, "Skrting On the Surface," and we hear the vocals, guitar, bass and drums weaving so perfectly with lyrics that remind us how fragile our lives are and for me how these magical moments can be transcendent.

Full harmony,

(Dale, dale, dale, dale),
(Dale, dale, dale, dale),
(Dale, dale, dale, dale),

Esa falda,
Chiquitita,
Que bonita te queda,
La veía to’ los días,
Ahora es cuando se pueda,
Y de la uni yo la saco hasta donde se hospeda,
Y las demás que sigan envidiando,
Por eso no prosperan

Esa falda,
Chiquitita,

Ella a mi me des configura,
Mezcla lo sensual,
La calle y la finura,
Cuando quiere no disimula,
Hoy va pa’ la calle,
Se bebe y se fuma,
Quiere un tipo que la presuma,
Su booty heavy weight,
El jacuzzi con espuma,
Chingando escuchando a Peso Pluma

Esa falda,
Chiquitita,

Esa falda,
Chiquitita,
Ay que bonita te queda,
Yo la veía to’ los días,
Ahora es cuando se pueda,
Y de la uni yo la saco hasta donde se hospeda,
Y las demás que sigan envidiando,
Por eso no prosperan

(Esa falda,

Lyrics:

BEHANI:

I need a man,
I need a real man,
Say what he means,
Mean what he say,
Keep it so real man.

And he don’t play,
No he don’t play bout me,
For the real man,
Love me for real man,
Love me for real.

What’s money to a man when he got that,
Spend a bag on a bag to apologise,
When all he had to do was a apologise,
Can’t solve every problem with a dollar,
I am not that,
That can never be me.

Need a man that really wants to please me,
Do it cause he love me,
Not because it’s easy.

I am not impressed by the diamonds on your chest,
If underneath there ain’t no heart,
Said I need passion not attention,
But your worth don’t tell me who you are.

Understand,
Understand,

I need a man,
I need a real man,
Say what he means,
Mean what he say,
Keep it so real man.

Show me something real,
Show me something real,
Not just something I can spend,
But something I can feel.

Respect my intellect,
Not just my sex appeal,
Do that and maybe we can chill.

NE-YO:

“Don’t go looking for Perfection
Baby Ain’t No Truth in This”

“No more knights in shining armor,
Now it’s shiny necks and wrists…”

“But beneath these shiny diamonds you will surely find a heart.
My jewelry selection and my affection are both true works of art.”

“What I mean is imma treat you like you deserve to be treated
you don’t ever have to ask if you need it, it’s there.
Notice how I said need,
baby imma provide so that we can proceed.”

“Hit me when I talk and imma listen when you speak”

“Loving on your intellect as well as the booty.”

“Makin sure that we never lose.
Run the verse back if you don’t know who to choose.”

BEHANI:

I need a man,
I need a real man
Say what he means,
Mean what he say,
Keep it so real man

And he don’t play,
No he don’t play bout me for real man,
Love me for real man,
Love me for real.

Show me something real,
Show me something real,
Not just something I can spend,
But something I can feel,
Respect my intellect not just my sex appeal,
Do that and maybe we can chill.

I, I,
I need a real man,
I, I
I need a real man,
I, I
I need a real man
Yeah.

Squid perform Narrator at Glastonbury 2022. Go to BBC iPlayer now to watch more.

In pop-music circles, Suzanne Vega is known almost entirely for two songs from the late 1980s: the child-abuse ballad "Luka" and a song that launched literally dozens of dance remixes, "Tom's Diner." But Vega has been making vital, inventive music the entire time — much of it folk-based, though her sound has taken many smart detours along the way — and is about to put out her first album of original material in seven years, Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles. The challenge, then, lies in capturing a snapshot of her career in only four songs.

For this Tiny Desk Concert — performed with her brilliant guitarist and producer, Gerry Leonard — Vega splits the difference evenly between old and new, bookending her set with the aforementioned classics and tucking two about-to-be-released songs in the middle. Game and good-spirited throughout, Vega performed "Luka" and "Tom's Diner" as if she hadn't played them thousands of times before — aided greatly by Leonard, who's worked extensively with David Bowie and lends these songs an extraordinary amount of color and texture. (Check out the "bells" he adds near the end of "Tom's Diner.")

Vega's songwriting gifts haven't waned at any point in her long career, and the new songs here — taken from a concept album about the way our world and the spiritual realm intersect — sound as sharp as anything she's done. It only makes sense that, nearly 30 years after her debut, she still examines new realms with grace, empathy and an explorer's spirit. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Lyrics
Holding me back,
Gravity’s holding me back,
I want you to hold out the palm of your hand,
Why don’t we leave it at that?,
Nothing to say,
When everything gets in the way,
Seems you cannot be replaced,
And I’m the one who will stay,
Ooh,

In this world,
It’s just us,
You know it’s not the same as it was,
In this world,
It’s just us,
You know it’s not the same as it was,
As it was,
As it was,
You know it’s not the same,

Answer the phone,
“Harry, you’re no good alone,
Why are you sitting at home on the floor?,
What kind of pills are you on?”,
Ringing the bell,
And nobody’s coming to help,
Your daddy lives by himself,
He just wants to know that you’re well,
Ooh,

In this world,
It’s just us,
You know it’s not the same as it was,
In this world,
It’s just us,
You know it’s not the same as it was,
As it was,
As it was,
You know it’s not the same,

Go home,
Get ahead,
Light speed internet,
I don’t want to talk about the way that it was,
Leave America,
Two kids follow her,
I don’t want to talk about who’s doing it first,
(Hey!),

As it was,
You know it’s not the same as it was,
As it was,
As it was,

After, James congratulates the band on their GRAMMY nomination and AMA wins before asking if they still get nerves before their performances.
