Sama’s sound has transcended beyond the influences of her Palestinian hometown to dancefloors around the globe, capturing the essence of Beirut's flourishing underground with her take on Lebanon-meets-Berlin techno. Sama’ now gears up for a string of shows across North and South America this spring where she’ll bring her distinctive full-bodied techno sound to the States.

In 2022, Sama’ started up the Bring Back Beirut fundraising initiative in aid of liquidity crisis-afflicted Lebanon, hosting shows in cities including Paris, London, Berlin, and her adopted home of Beirut. As one of Palestine’s biggest exports, the DJ and producer is now taking the world by storm and is even set to star in a brand new documentary created by a selection of Middle Eastern directors and producers in the coming months.

On her residency she says:
“I am hugely excited to join the long list of iconic artists who have hosted the 4 Fridays at Phonox residency in London, I loved playing at the club earlier this year for my Bring Back Beirut fundraiser and loved the energy of the loyal crowd who party there. I am bringing with me my Union collective crew again, plus have invited two artists whom I respect hugely – Jennifer Cardini and Victor Ruiz.” – Sama’ Abdulhadi.

THE FACE x New Balance brought together Sainté, BU$HI, Leys and Parisian collective 99GINGER last week for Paris Fashion Week Mens.
Mixmag was there to bring a stream a from Kirou Kirou, founder of 99GINGER, the collective who have been steadily building a buzz in the French capital since 2018. These days they’re throwing parties everywhere from London to Los Angeles, joining the dots between jazz, deep house, amapiano, batida, drum’n’bass, rap and techno.

Kirou Kirou, a 29-year-old curator and creative director, founded 99GINGER with 28-year-old project manager Ava Andreani. The core crew now consists of seven members: ​“The team was built around energies,” Kirou told THE FACE. Although the collective’s core members have different backgrounds, with familial roots that range from Ethiopian and Brazilian to Cambodian and Algerian, they all speak ​“the same cultural language.”

Some Parisians still don’t get it. Local media and promoters have reduced 99GINGER erroneously to ​“the afrobeat collective” (which ​“doesn’t mean anything,” says Kirou), even though its members also play a wide range of music. But the crew has carved out a niche that’s made an impact on the wider Paris scene. ​“We have our community that understands us,” Kirou says. Today, there’s a growing French scene that is ​“more colourful, more métissé [mixed].”

Brooklyn Drill took off in 2019 with the rise of Pop Smoke and Fivio Foreign, but it was a long time in the making. Early Brooklyn artists like Bobby Shmurda and Rowdy Rebel paved the way. Then artists like Bam Bino, Curly Savv, and Dah Dah kept it lit. In 2016 and 2017 artists like 22gz and Sheff G hopped on the UK sound and started the wave NY is still on today. Plenty more artists like Jay Dee, PNV Jay, Envy Caine, Maxthademon, Ciggy Blacc, 26AR, Bizzy Banks, Dusty Locane, Rah Swish, Coach Da Ghost, Freshy Dageneral. Played a part in the scene and groups like Woo and Choo also drew fans in.

Drag 0n was a young 17 year old that came around the same underground scenes DMX would battle at, and one day he’s placed in the ring to battle none other than DMX. According to Drag, the two battle for about an hour with DMX winning every round. But, that day a respect was shown to Drag on for having the stamina and rhymes to take it their with a phenom like DMX by everyone in the room, especially DMX, who saw much of himself in Drag on, and because DMX was so hot at the time, anything he said was pretty much how things went. Drag on was signed in 97 and placed under the wing of DMX as his protege. He was like X’s little brother. He dropped a certified gold album on his debut, but from things things within the industry went down hill.
