'Jam' performed by James Brown and his band, that he did during his 2nd performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1981, held in the Congress center in The Hague.

This second concert is extraordinary and sees a James Brown that really gives everything to get the audience to their feet. The first concert that we published on 5 October 2017 which was recorded by AVRO Television earlier that 11th July 1981 saw a lame audience that did not know how to react. In this fantastic video we see what James Brown could do with any audience. Also this concert has a different tracklisting including a sensational 'It's A Man's World' in which he pays tribute to great artists who died such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and especially to John Lennon, who died some 6 months earlier.
The concert's encore is a raving rendition of 'Sex Machine'.

'Walk On The Water' as performed by Gerry Mulligan at this North Sea Jazz Festival performance, is from his 1980 album 'Walk on the Water' In 1982, the album received the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.

American jazz baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and his Big Band performed this composition at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Prins Willem Alexanderzaal of the Congresgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands on July 16th, 1982.

Gerry Mulligan was one of the leading arrangers in the era of cool jazz working with Miles Davis, Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Mulligan’s quartet of the early 50’s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups.
Born in New York in 1927, Mulliagan spend his life composing, arranging and playing jazz untill his untimely death on January 20, 1996.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, but simply "O.P." by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

This exclusive performance with master violonist Stephane Grappelli (26 January 1908 – 1 December 1997) was recorded at the AVRO TV Grand Gala du Disque 1974. The introduction is by famous Dutch TV host Willem Duys. It took place at the RAI hall, Amsterdam on 15 February 1974.

Dorothy Donegan (April 6, 1922 – May 19, 1998) was an American classically trained jazz pianist primarily known for performing
in the stride piano and boogie-woogie style. She also played bop, swing jazz, and classical music. Obituaries for her argued that
her flamboyant personality, tendency to mix unrelated genres in the same concert, and willingness to do lounge music may have
caused her to be undervalued in jazz circles.

George Benson (born March 22, 1943 is an American musician, guitarist, and singer-songwriter. He began his professional career at 21 as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt.
Benson performed many times at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

This fantastic performance was recorded by AVRO Television on 12th July, 1987 at the Garden Pavillion, Congressgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands, 12 July 1987. It also features special guest guitarist Earl Klugh.

"East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)" is a popular song written by Brooks Bowman, an undergraduate member of Princeton University's Class of 1936, for the 1934 production of the Princeton Triangle Club's production of Stags at Bay.
Sarah Vaughan recorded it in a 1949 Columbia session for the album 'Sarah Vaughan in Hi-Fi', and also for her 1953 EP "Hot Jazz"
At the 1981 North Sea Jazz Festival it was included in Sarah Vaughan's set.

Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 – April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by Scott Yanow as having "one of
the most wondrous voices of the 20th century."
This concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival was recorded on 12 July 1981.

Arguably the greatest drummer of all time, the legendary Buddy Rich exhibited his love for music through a dedication of his life to the art. His career spanned seven decades, beginning when Rich was 18 months old and continuing until his death in 1987. Immensively gifted, Rich could play with remarkable speed and dexterity despite the fact that he never received a formal lesson and refused to practise outside his performances. In this 1978 concert, with maybe his best band ever, he shows how unique he is as a performer and bandleader. The show was recorded in 1978 during the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Congresgebouw, The Hague, the Netherlands.

Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and composer. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". He was often referred to as "The Genius". Charles was blind from the age of seven.
He played several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival. This is the second concert that day in 1980.

This is the second performance of James Brown and his band, that he did during the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1981, held in the Congress center in The Hague.

This second concert is extraordinary and sees a James Brown that really gives everything to get the audience to their feet. The first concert that we published on 5 October 2017 which was recorded by AVRO Television earlier that 11th July 1981 saw a lame audience that did not know how to react. In this fantastic video we see what James Brown could do with any audience. Also this concert has a different tracklisting including a sensational 'It's A Man's World' in which he pays tribute to great artists who died such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and especially to John Lennon, who died some 6 months earlier.
The concert's encore is a raving rendition of 'Sex Machine'.

Found in the basement of AVROTROS and digitalized by InnArchive, this recording is the introduction to the Oscar Petersons Trio’s album ‘’We Get Requests’ in the Netherlands in 1965. Oscar Peterson (piano); Ray Brown (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums).
Oscar Peterson (1925 – 2007) is considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all times. He was taught to play the piano and the trumpet by his father at the age of five. At the age of seven, he stopped playing the trumpet due to tuberculosis. He became well-known for his technical skills and musical inventiveness on the piano at an early age. During his career, Peterson accrued multiple Grammy Awards. Since 2010, the city of Ottawa has Honoured Oscar Peterson with a statue.

RIP Bonnie Pointer.
“Steam heat” is a show tune written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the Broadway musical “The Pajama Game” in 1954. The Pointer sisters were four sisters (Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June) and children of the Pastor Eltion Pointer. They started their singing career in the beginning of the 1960s in the church of their dad. The sisters grew up in a ministerial family. Listening to secular music was strongly forbidden at home. Only gospel music was allowed. Once June brought an Elvis Presley single “All Shook Up” home which was only possible because of the b-side; “Crying in the Chapel.” This footage came from the TV-program: Music All In. The performance has been very well preserved by the AVROTROS and digitized by InnArchive.

Ella Fitzgerald (1917 – 1996) is probably one of the best scat singers in its history. She had a long-lasting and successful career of nearly 60 years, with her last performance being in 1993. She was a jazz fan from a young age. She had this magical voice which she could transform any sad lyrics into a happy melody. Even though she didn’t had too many reasons to be happy. During her childhood she had to deal with a very aggressive stepfather and her mother killed in 1932, she ran away to Harlem to live with her aunt. According to the New York Times, she also dabbled in criminal activities, which eventually put her in an orphanage. Luckily her career went less tough on her. She won 14 Grammy Awards and a Presidential Medal of Freedom during this period. “April in Paris” was composed in 1931 on a baby grand piano located in Boccino's 54th Street rehearsal hall. This baby grand piano is now owned by Michael Adams and many pianists have recently played “April in Paris” on the same piano which it was composed on. "Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop" is a 1946 song by Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra. The song was credited to Hampton and his drummer Curley Hamner, although it was partly rewritten of Helen Humes’ hit “Be-Baba-Leba”. Once upon a time in the 1930's, Lionel Hampton (April 20, 1908 – August 31, 2002) together with Louis Armstrong and Lionel’s Orchestra were recording a new track together. This studio was also equipped with a vibraphone, which Hampton immediately played on after Armstrong asked him to do so. Hampton played the songs: “Memories of you & Shine.” Since this day, Hampton is called the first jazz vibronist of the world. The vibraphone wasn’t the only instrument Hampton mastered. Hampton was also well-known for his improvisation skills on several instruments. Some say Hampton created the start of rock and roll! Lionel Hampton was a jazz vibranist, pianist, drummer and bandleader. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

This unique performance was recorded for the Dutch TROS TV Program 'Music-All-In' on 3 May 1974.

Dionne Warwick; born as Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12, 1940) is an African American singer, actress and TV-show host. Warwick belongs to the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire rock era. Dionne grew up in a very musical family in New Jersey. She started a singing group together with her aunt and her sister named: “The Gospelaires”. When The Gospelaires collaborated on a song by the Drifters, the songwriter of the song: Burt Bacharach came to listen. He discover Dionne and invited her to sing some demos. Her first single: “Don’t make me over” was released in 1962 but they had misspelled her name (Warwick instead of Warrick). Ever since she decided to keep this name.

"East of the Sun" was first recorded by Hal Kemp for Brunswick Records on Dec. 1, 1934. A favorite song on campus, it has been arranged in many different formats, and continues to be featured on student group albums as recently as 2010. Since the 1950s the song has become a popular staple of many jazz musicians.

“Bweebida Bwobbida” (sometimes spelled “Bweebida Bobbida”) was originally conceived as a vehicle for larger ensembles by its composer, Gerry Mulligan. Based on the well-known chord changes to the standard “I Got Rhythm,” he first recorded it for Prestige and the baritone saxophonist continued to tinker with its arrangement over the next 11 years, recording a brilliant quartet version with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer for the album the Gerry Mulligan Songbook. He asked Brookmeyer to arrange it for the critically acclaimed Concert Jazz Band in the early 1960s. Brookmeyer retained the inventive improvised counterpoint between he and the baritone saxophonist, but he greatly extended and revamped the work, adding some pep to the chart while also leaving room to show case soloists like alto saxophonist Gene Quill. Mulligan recorded a final quartet version with Brookmeyer during the making of the Phillips LP Spring is Sprung in 1962, though this version remains unissued.

Michael Leonard Brecker (March 29, 1949 – January 13, 2007) was an American jazzsaxophonist and composer. He was awarded 15 Grammy Awards as both performer and composer. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2004 and was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2007.
This is a recording of the concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival 1987 in The Hague, The Netherlands.
