#EsperanzaSpalding (Esperanza Emily Spalding, born October 18, 1984) is an American #jazz bassist, singer, songwriter, and composer. Her accolades include four Grammy Awards, a Boston Music Award, and a Soul Train Music Award.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Spalding began playing music professionally in her childhood, performing as a violinist in the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at age five. She was later both self-taught and trained on a number of instruments, including guitar and bass. Her proficiency earned her academic scholarships to Portland State University and the Berklee College of Music, both of which she attended, studying music.

Spalding released her first album, Junjo, in 2006 on the Spanish label Ayva Musica, after which she signed with the independent American label Heads Up, who released her 2007 self-titled album. Her third studio album, Chamber Music Society (2010), was a commercial success, charting at number 34 on the Billboard 200, and resulting in Spalding winning her first Grammy Award for Best New Artist; Spalding was the first jazz artist to win in this category. She saw further acclaim for her fourth release, Radio Music Society (2012), which earned the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, as well as the track "City of Roses" winning for Best Arrangement, Instrument and Vocals.

After spending the following several years performing as a supporting band player, Spalding released her fifth studio album, a funk rock-inspired concept album titled Emily's D+Evolution, co-produced by Tony Visconti, on Concord Records. The following year, she released the album Exposure, which was limited to 7,777 copies. Her subsequent sixth studio record, 12 Little Spells, was released in 2019, and peaked at number one on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums. The album also saw Spalding nominated for two Grammy Awards, winning in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category.

In addition to writing and performing music, Spalding has also worked as an instructor, first at the Berklee College of Music, beginning at age 20. In 2017, Spalding was appointed professor of the Practice of Music at Harvard University. In 2018, Spalding received an honorary doctorate of music from her alma mater, Berklee College of Music, and served as commencement speaker at the ceremony.

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Have you ever met a girl that you tried to date
But a year to make love she wanted you to wait?
Let me tell a story of my situation
I was talkin' to this girl from the U.S. nation
The way that I met her was on tour, at a concert
She had long hair and a short miniskirt
I just got on stage, drippin', pourin' with sweat
I was walkin' through the crowd and guess who I met
I whispered in her ear, "Come to the picture booth
So I can ask you some questions to see if ya hundred proof"
I asked her her name, she said: "Blah-blah-blah"
She had 9/10 pants and a very big bra
I took a couple of flicks and she was enthused
I said: "How do you like the show?" She said: "I was very amused"
I started throwin' bass, she started throwin' back mid-range
But when I sprung the question, she acted kind of strange
Then when I asked, "Do ya have a man?", she tried to pretend
She said: "No, I don't, I only have a friend"
Come on!
I'm not even goin' for it, this is what I'm goin' sing

[Chorus]
You, you got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
And you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend

[Verse 2]
So I took blah-blah's word for it at this time
I thought just havin' a friend couldn't be no crime
'Cause I have friends and that's a fact
Like Agnes, Agatha, Germaine, and Jack
Forget about that, let's go into the story
About a girl named "blah-blah-blah" that adored me
So we started talkin', gettin' familiar
Spendin' a lot of time, so we can build a
Relationship or some understanding
How it's gonna be in the future we was plannin'
Everything sounded so dandy and sweet
I had no idea I was in for a treat
After this was established, everything was cool
The tour was over and she went back to school
I called every day to see how she was doin'
Every time that I called her, it seemed somethin' was brewin'
I called her room, a guy picked up, but then I called again
I say: "Yo, who was that?" "Oh, he's just a friend"
Don't gimme that, don't even gimme that!
Jus' bust this

[Chorus]
You, you got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
And you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend, oh baby
You got what I need
But you say he's just a friend
But you say he's just a friend

[Verse 3]
So, I came to her college on a surprise visit
To see my girl, that was so exquisite
It was a school day, I knew she was there
The first semester of the school year
I went to a gate to ask where was her dorm
This guy made me fill out a visitor's form
He told me where it was and I was on my way
To see my baby doll, I was happy to say
I arrived in front of the dormitory
"Yo, could you tell me where is door three?"
They showed me where it was for the moment
I didn't know I was in for such an event
So, I came to her room and opened the door
Oh, snap! Guess what I saw?
A fella tongue-kissin' my girl in her mouth
I was so in shock, my heart went down south
So please, listen to the message that I send
Don't ever talk to a girl who says she just has a friend...

Song Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

[Chorus]
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

[Verse 2]
And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

[Chorus]
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

[Bridge]
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

[Verse 3]
Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water from the bottom of the ocean
Water dissolving and water removing

[Chorus]
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

[Verse 4]
You may ask yourself, "What is that beautiful house?"
You may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"
And you may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"
And you may say to yourself, "My God, what have I done?"

[Outro]
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up, time isn't after us
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was (I couldn't get no rest)
Same as it ever was, hey let's all twist our thumbs
Here comes the twister
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was, same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was, same as it ever was)
Once in a lifetime, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

The club isn’t the best place to find a lover
So the bar is where I go
Me and my friends at the table doing shots drinking fast and then we talk slow
you come over and start up a conversation with just me and trust me I’ll give it a chance now
Take my hand stop, put van the man on the jukebox and then we start to dance
And now I’m singing like

Girl you know I want your love
Your love was handmade for somebody like me
Come on now follow my lead
I may be crazy don’t mind me
Say boy let’s not talk too much
Grab on my waist and put that body on me
Come on now follow my lead
Come come on now follow my lead

I’m in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I’m in love with your body
Last night you were in my room
And now my bed sheets smell like you
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with your body

Oh I X 4
I’m in love with your body
Oh I X 4
I’m in love with your body
Oh I X 4
I’m in love with your body
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you

One week in we let the story begin
We’re going out on our first date
You and me are thrifty
So go all you can eat
Fill up your bag and I fill up a plate
We talk for hours and hours about the sweet and the sour
And how your family’s doing ok
leave and get in a taxi, then kiss in the backseat
Tell the driver make the radio play
and I'm singing like

Girl you know I want your love
Your love was handmade for somebody like me
Come on now follow my lead
I may be crazy, don’t mind me
Say boy let’s not talk too much
Grab on my waist and put that body on me
Come on now follow my lead
Come come on now follow my lead

I’m in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I’m in love with your body
Last night you were in my room
And now my bed sheets smell like you
Every day discovering something brand new

Well I’m in love with your body
Oh I x 4
I’m in love with your body
Oh I x 4
I’m in love with your body
Oh I X 4
I’m in love with your body
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you

Come on be my baby come on X 8

I’m in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I’m in love with your body
Last night you were in my room
And now my bed sheets smell like you
Every day discovering something brand new

Well I’m in love with your body
Come on be my baby come on X 6
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you

LYRICS:
Where my dogs at?
(We right here, dog) Where my dogs at?
(I'm right here, dog)
What must I go through to show you sh*t is real?
And I ain't really never gave a f*ck how n*ggas feel
Rob then I steal, not 'cause I want to, 'cause I have to
And don't make me show you with the Magnum
If you don't know by now, then you slippin'
I'm on some bullsh*t that's got me jackin', n*ggas flippin'
I got my man and them stay pretty like I'm a stay sh*tty
Cuddy, it's all for the money, is you wit' me?
Hit the b*tches, when I commit the crime
And when it's on, we transform like Optimus Prime
I'll form the head, roll out, let's make it happen
If we ain't gonna get it wit' them, we'll take a cap
Bustin' off, dustin' off 'cause them softest n*ggas
Money with the biggest mouth yo, let's off this n*gga
A novice n*gga never made a sound
Breathe too f*ckin' hard and he gettin' bust down
Yo, yo, y'all n*ggas wanna be killers? (Get at me, dog)
Y'all n*ggas wanna feel us? (Get at me, dog)
Y'all n*ggas want the real? (Get at me, dog)
What the deal?
Y'all n*ggas wanna be killers? (Get at me, dog)
Y'all n*ggas wanna feel us? (Get at me, dog)
Y'all n*ggas want the real? (Get at me, dog)
Nowadays, it ain't lookin' too good for certain n*ggas, I'm hurtin' n*ggas
What you doin' robbin' n*ggas, jerkin' n*ggas, stickin' n*ggas?
'Cause they deserve it, with money got murdered
They know he died slow if they heard it
The n*gga ain't blew up his spot a while
And the mother f*cker ain't got shot in a while
Just take some light up, to f*ck the night up
Blow everything in sight up
f*ck around and I'll have your ass right up
What makes you think you wasn't able to stand?
I got sh*t that'll disable a man with the wave of the hand
The days are longer and seems like I'm wastin' time
I've got a lot of dreams, but I'm not really chasin' mine
I soak it all up like you set the fire
Nowadays gettin' by, is nothing more than the occasional meal and gettin' high
I live to die, that's where I'm headed
Let your man hold somthin', now it's all about you can get it
Y'all n*ggas wanna be killers? (Get at me, dog)
Y'all n*ggas wanna feel us? (Get at me, dog)
Y'all n*ggas want the real? (Get at me, dog)
One in the back wit' ya f*ggot-ass face down
Lucky that you breathin' but you dead from the waist down
The f*ck is on your mind? Talkin' that sh*t that you be talkin'
And I bet you wish you never got hit 'cause you'd be walkin'
But sh*t happens, and f*ck it, you done did your dirt
n*ggas is wonderin' how the f*ck you hid your skirt
Right under they eyes, now it's surprise to the guys
And one of their mans was a b*tch in disguise
f*ckin' with cats and order more hits and slaughter more kids
Let me holler at you on Baltimore sh*t
Know what I mean? I'm just robbin' to eat
And there's at least a thousand of us like me mobbin' the street
When we starve, then we eat whatever's there
Come on, you know the code in the street, whatever's fair
Blood stains and chalk, means your man couldn't walk
After the talk about him not being on the 11:33 to New York
Transformin' ass n*ggas will get it quick
And yo for real that n*gga K can suck my dick
And it's gon' take all these n*ggas in the rap game
To barely move me 'cause when I blow sh*t up
I'll have n*ggas fallin' like white b*tches in a scary movie
Ah, you know I don't know how to act
Get too close to n*ggas, it's like
"Protected by viper, stand back."
What's that? I thought you n*ggas was killas, demented
f*ck you want me with this coward?
Finish him, it's ended
