Six Jazz legends gather at the Catalina Jazz club to discuss the style and personality of Miles Davis. We filmed this as research for the 2015 film, Miles Ahead, but the conversation turned out to be so compelling, we decided to release it as a standalone documentary. In many ways, Miles Davis and his contribution to music are a reflection of the pendulum that was mid-20th century America. By definition, a pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely- or more appropriately, a metronome. Prejudice, persecution, drug abuse, and relevancy weighed heavily on the black Jazz musician at the turn of the century. Miles Davis’ response…smash the metronome. In other words, find your own rhythm and do not seek freedom. Take it. Thirteen years after shooting this, we are pleased to present a fascinating glimpse into America’s one true art form - Jazz. While the conversation centers around Miles Davis, you get a rare insight into the genre through the eyes of six of its greatest practitioners.

Roger Waters and Nick Mason meet while studying architecture at what is now known as the University of Westminster. Eventually, they both joined a band called Sigma 6, although at one point the band was called the Meggadeaths and they eventually settled on the name The Tea Set. Waters played lead guitar and Mason played drums. There was also Keith Noble, Clive Metcalfe, and another fellow architecture student named Richard Wright who played keyboard. For lack of a better word, The Tea Set was a standard rock band that specialized in R&B covers.

However, soon Noble and Metcalfe left the band, and others took their place. There was Bob Klose, who played lead guitar after Waters shifted to bass guitar. Klose introduced Waters to Chris Dennis, who became their new lead singer. Meanwhile, Syd Barrett, a childhood friend of Waters, also joined up with them playing guitar. In December 1964, they recorded for the first time at a studio that one of Wright’s friends let them use.

In early 1965, the Royal Air Force assigned Dennis to Bahrain, so Barrett stepped in to become the band’s new singer. A few months later, they became the resident band at the Countdown Club in London. Each night into the wee hours they played three 90-minute sets. This was when their songs got longer with more solos and they, dare I say, got more experimental with their sound. In the summer, after pressure from his parents and teachers, Klose quit the band to focus on his studies, and Barrett also took over lead guitar.

After going through various more name changes, by the end of 1965 the four of them- Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright- were now billing themselves Pink Floyd. The name came from the combined names of two American blues musicians Barrett loved, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Pink Floyd played lots of gigs throughout 1966, and even started to get paid for them! Led by Barrett, their sound was a weird mix of rock, blues, and even music hall. Ultimately, their sound distinctly became known as psychedelic, meaning music influenced by psychedelic drugs…hallucinogenic drugs that created weird states of consciousness. Barrett, in particular, became a regular user of LSD, and that heavily influenced the band’s music. The author Lewis Carroll also heavily influenced Barrett’s lyrics.

My top 100 is now complete it is 108 to be exact you will notice throughout the collection there is a lot of Dion I just felt he was the best I understand Elvis was great but to me Dion was the king.My top 100 are most likely different than most made up from memories from my years of DJing for example there was a couple in their 40s at the time they asked me to play The Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody as their first dance but cut it after 15 seconds and go into Vito and the salutations version imagine now the couple is out there by themselves everyone's taking pictures everything's quiet then Vito comes on everyone looked at me like I made a mistake but when they noticed the bride and groom were doing a Lindy everyone in attendance just joined in now I'm not going to sit everybody down for the toast when the whole place is on the Dance Floor people came up to me and said keep it going I continued with zoom zoom zoom never let you go and Great Balls of Fire that's when the maitre d told me if I didn't stop he would pull my electric the dinner orders haven't even been taken what's the matter with you you'll never play here again one of my most fun weddings ever.. there are so many memories from these 100 songs I could write a book this was just one with four songs included you just can't make this stuff up

The band’s first two albums which were released in the 90's would be massive sellers, but by the later part of the decade, band was on the brink of collapse. Cancelled tours and controversy led to the band falling apart almost a decade after taking over the world. The band would remerge in 2009 until it all came crashing down almost a decade later resulting n the end of one of the most successful alternative bands to come out of the last three decades..

Watching Antonio Sánchez and Bad Hombre behind the Tiny Desk is witnessing an entire band exploring the rhythm of language.

Fueled by Sánchez's propulsive drumming, the band both complements and acts as a foil to vocalist Thana Alexa's soaring interpretations of three tracks from Sánchez's latest album, SHIFT (Bad Hombre, Vol II).

Bassist Lex Sadler and keyboard wizard BIGYUKI join Sánchez and Alexa to kick things off with "Doyenne," a song that features a powerful drum solo that reflects why Sánchez is a first-call sideman to a number of A-List jazz musicians (not to mention his 18 years with guitarist Pat Metheny).

On "The Bucket," the band falls into a drone-like groove while Alexa's vocals swoop and soar through the music. Her spoken word delivery at the end is powerful for its content as well as the band's supple support.

Chilean-French singer Ana Tijoux co-wrote the last tune, "Mi palabra," and true to her hip-hop roots, the song is a meditation on how language and voice can be the ultimate source of rhythm. BIGYUKI moves the band from a whisper to a scream, pulling out a variety of notes and sounds during a solo that mirrors the rhythmic sensibilities that Tijoux has set up with her stream of free-flowing word play.

Antonio Sánchez observes the world with a drummer's sensibilities. As he tours with his pals in Bad Hombre and puts on performances like these, he expresses the kind of musicality that makes him one of today's best jazz drummers.
