This year's Black History Month celebration at the Tiny Desk features a carefully crafted lineup spanning many genres, generations and walks of life. Each artist represents the best in their class and will be performing at the Tiny Desk for the first time.

Omah Lay brought a calm demeanor and a bright smile to his time at NPR headquarters. By the third song of his Tiny Desk concert, “soso,” I realized that the Nigerian star was exercising lots of emotions through this set. The first two titles, “Bad Influence” and “i’m a mess,” are self-explanatory, yet the message of “soso” — that he’s yearning for something to take his pain away — could get lost in the song’s upbeat rhythms. At any rate, Omah Lay’s performance showcases a songwriter grappling with all the feels, unafraid to share them with the world.

Omah Lay rose to prominence during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic with his debut EP, Get Layd. In a short time, he’s joined the slew of African artists who’ve dominated dance floors and infiltrated America with Afro-fusion music. The feat is extraordinary and bittersweet, given that when he first broke through, the music industry was in a frenzy and the clubs closed. But songs like “Lo Lo” and “Free My Mind” resonated despite not booming in the big speakers, and he kept working until it was safe to come back out — and landed even more hits. He made the trip from Nigeria exclusively for the Tiny Desk and brought his band, The Raw Soundz, from Ghana, plus percussionist Boogie and singers Monet Shelton and Domo Abrams. Together, they flipped selections from Omah’s catalog, including a new version of his hit “understand” with a twist.

In November 1989, two bands from Manchester appeared together on Top of the Pops and it changed indie music forever. The Madchester sound was the unity of jangly guitars and thumping dance music: big, psychedelic, even funky and a perfect companion to taking Ecstasy. Artists like The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, A Guy Called Gerald, 808 State and The Charlatans would bridge this formerly insurmountable musical gap.

It is the story of punk and disco colliding, how Manchester became for a brief moment the centre of the musical universe, and why Bez is one of the most important figures in British music. This is Before 1989: How Manchester Became Madchester.

Amerigo Gazaway’s *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album's foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework.

Carefully weaving Bey’s tangled raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm "mashup" album.

R&B singer, songwriter and record producer Donell Jones dominated the ‘90s and early 2000s music scene with his own unique blend of the genre combining old school soul with a new school vibe. It would later be revealed that the passion in his art, that would give him so much success, was drawn from his own life experiences. He had the swagger of a hip hop rapper and the vocal prowess of an R&B balladeer. Montell Jordan burst onto the entertainment scene in the mid ‘90s and immediately rose to the top of the charts while also using his attention-grabbing height and good looks to create the image of a single and ready to mingle Hollywood heartthrob. He wasn’t single though he was very married and, before long, that false public image would lead to causing his wife immense pain and put their relationship in jeopardy. Creative differences with his label, money issues and the realization that his choices weren’t serving him well forced Montell to re-examine everything and ultimately decide to take his life in a more meaningful and spiritual direction.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide prominence as one of the founding members of The Beatles, one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts. in the history of popular music. Together with fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, he formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century.

Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon was involved as a teenager in a skiffle madness; his first band, The Quarrymen, developed into The Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career that resulted in the critically acclaimed John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine albums, and iconic songs such as as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". Lennon left the music business in 1975 to devote time to his family, but reappeared in 1980 with a new album, Double Fantasy. He was killed by Mark Chapman three weeks after his release.

Lennon expressed his rebellious nature and sharp wit in his music, writing, drawings, in films, and in interviews, and he became controversial through his political activism and peacemaking. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by the Richard Nixon administration to deport him, while his songs were adopted as the national anthem by the anti-war movement.

In 2010, Lennon's solo album sales in the United States exceeded 14 million units, and as a writer, co-writer or performer, he was responsible for 27 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth greatest singer of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

A Los Angeles judge sentenced Eric R. Holder Jr., the man convicted of gunning down Nipsey Hussle, to 60 years to life in prison after hearing testaments to the immense cost of the killing of the hip-hop star and neighborhood leader.

Holder Jr., 33, was found guilty of the 2019 first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist outside the clothing store Hussle founded, the Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where both men grew up.
