Nina Burmi uses her smooth three-octave vocal range to explore the thumri style - a semi-classical genre intimately connected with dance, poetry, and drama.

Learn more about the music:
Thumri is a sensuous ‘light classical’ style, originating in Uttar Pradesh. The word is derived from the Hindi ‘thumakna’, meaning ‘to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle’, and the genre remains closely connected with dance and drama. Ragas are treated more flexibly, and songs are often devotional, romantic, or even erotic in nature. Lyrics have a central role, often being based on folk tales or classical poetry, and commonly depicting the separation of lovers, or myths of Lord Krishna.

Nina Burmi sings in the Kirana gharana style, tackling khayal, thumri, bhajan, and other forms. Currently living in the UK, she trained under the esteemed husband-wife pairing of Dilshad Khan and Parveen Sultana, and combines the latter’s wide vocal range with a more sparsely ornamented approach. In this song she is joined by top accompanists, with lyrics describing the tension and sorrow of a lover who is separated from Lord Krishna.

Modern music therapy is a technology for resolving medical, rehabilitation, developmental, correctional, and educational tasks. Research in this area is aimed at studying the possibility of influencing a person’s personality by combining medical, pedagogical, psychotherapeutic methods with controlled musical influence.
The first studies of the healing effects of music on the human body began at the end of the 19th century. In 1899, neuropathologist James L. Corning conducted the first research using music to treat patients.

It's no secret to anyone that musical works can heal. Knowing certain rules of treatment with classical music, you can get rid of cancer, develop your creative and intellectual abilities. From what kind of music a person listens, even a character depends, which can also be easily changed.

Conducted in the United States of America, recent experiments in the field of music therapy have shown that listening in certain keys to classical works significantly (at times) speeds up the healing process of diseases of individual (corresponding to the key) organs:
D flat major - Heals from eye diseases and migraines.
E flat major - Cures ear diseases (otitis media), helps with diseases of the cervical vertebrae and throat (tonsillitis).
F Sharp Minor- Accelerates recovery from diseases of the heart and respiratory system (bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma).
Salt Sharp Minor- Helps to get rid of gallstones, with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (diseases such as ulcers and indigestion) and cures inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
A sharp minor - Positively affects the composition of the blood and improves the condition of the spine.
C major- Helps in the treatment of diseases, including colitis, with liver diseases (hepatitis), as well as inflammation of the appendix (appendix of the cecum).

D major - Heals the bladder and kidneys.
E major - It treats diseases of the nasal cavity (sinusitis, rhinitis) and diseases of the genital organs (prostatitis, inflammation of the appendages, irregular pain among women), helps a man to become a donor.
F major- Rheumatism is less of a concern when listening to music.
Salt Major - Heals skin diseases.
B major - Helps with joint diseases (arthritis) and foot diseases.

The Native American Flute can transport one to a more relaxed and calm state, especially after listening for 10 minutes or more. This feeling is known as the ‘alpha’ state, a state during which your brain is pulsing at a lower rate than your mental and emotional fluctuations. (Price, Creating and Using the Native American Love Flute, 1994). One of the most impactful ways to develop this alpha state, is by focusing on the breath. During our daily activities this can be a challenge, as due to our busy lives, our minds end up operating mostly in the ‘beta’ state. In this state, your conscious mind is dominant and your subconscious mind can’t break through to help you out, as it can when you are asleep. So, people who are able and trained to maintain a prolonged alpha state can deal with life much more effectively than people who are usually in beta (Price, Creating and Using the Native American Love Flute, 1994). In this way, native flute can lead you to develop more coordination, intuition, and intelligence. One of the main reasons for this is because listening to the flute encourages one to sit and ‘be with the breath’.

British-Austrian percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger brings a deep affinity with Indian rhythm to his roots in jazz and Western classical. Many Western percussionists have dabbled with the sounds and shapes of India, but Bernhard’s detailed study sets him apart - notably his association with tabla maestro Suresh Talwalkar. He interprets the grammar of Hindustani music on a variety of drums - full kit, cajon, or whatever he can lay his hands on - as well as writing for orchestra and dance.

He has worked with classical artists including Rakesh Chaurasia, as well as fusioneers such as Anoushka Shankar, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh, and Susheela Raman, as well as the Akram Khan company and his own group Circle of Sound. Watch Nothing Is Eternal, The FADER’s Otherworldly Short Film About AURORA.

In Bergen, Norway, the pop artist shares the childhood secrets that helped to build her captivating musical world.

“Music is not something you should keep for yourself. It can’t be put in a cage, because it’s wild and alive.” So says AURORA, the 20-year-old Norwegian singer-songwriter behind fantastical, stampeding folk-pop songs like “Conqueror” and “Runaway.” AURORA’s music often looks at the everyday with a kind of wide-eyed wonder, and in this new documentary short Nothing Is Eternal — directed by Isaac Ravishankara, and produced by The FADER with YouTube Music — it’s plain to see that that this worldview is no performance. It’s simply how AURORA lives her life.

Following the artist from the bustling streets of New York to her rain-soaked hometown of Bergen, the film includes interviews with AURORA's closest friends, as well as uniquely stripped-back performances of tracks including “Warrior” and “Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1).” Whether she’s reminiscing on her childhood with her sisters, dancing through the city streets in her headphones, or discussing the secret life of apples, there’s a spellbinding quality to everything the artist does.

“When I first met you, I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s a girl who’s magic,’” one of AURORA’s childhood friends remembers in a particularly endearing scene. The deeper this film goes into her lush and rose-tinted world, the harder it is to shake that feeling off.

Palestine Underground by Boiler Room, 4:3 and Ma3azef documents the resilience of a burgeoning music scene undeterred and fuelled by political restrictions, building bridges through a shared sound and identity.

For the past ten years, Palestinian music collective Jazar Crew have been fostering a vibrant party scene in Haifa, as an alternative to the mainstream club scene in Israel.

Thanks to the internet, they've connected with artists in Ramallah, Palestine, and defied the separation wall to travel to the West Bank and organise events with Techno DJs Sama' Abdulhadi and Oddz, and members of the tantalising hip hop and trap scene, the collectives Saleb Wahad and Bltnm.

Palestine Underground follows a week in the life of these artists and friends, in the lead up to the first Boiler Room in Ramallah in June this year.

Inspired by new sounds, new technologies and the political events of the time, the early 90s sees the emergence of a scene that euphorically celebrates the dawning of a new era.
In Berlin, Frankfurt and many other German cities, activists tinker on a new music and club culture oriented around the coordinates Techno and House.
At Berlin's Love Parade in 1991, different local scenes congregate for the first time. The trend turns into a movement. A German Summer of Love, which changes whole lives overnight and kick-starts careers.
The basic principle of Techno stands for experimenting, crossing borders and DIY. Fans become DJs or party promoters. Labels are founded and record stores open up. The scene grows. An independent microcosm is created. Networks are formed away from established structures. For a moment everything seems possible…
WE CALL IT TECHNO! tells the story of a tempestuous phase in music history, the first time that pop culture was created significantly in Germany.
With exclusive interviews and comprehensive, mostly unreleased film and photo archive material from the years 1988-1994!
