"My name's Gwenifer Raymond. I mostly just play guitar." There's an understated charm about the Welsh guitarist's limited banter behind the Desk, but little prepares you for what howls from her instrument. Raymond's fingerstyle guitar drones with a haunted quality, but her flurry of bends, slides and chord clusters rip open the firmament.

Steeped in pre-war blues, but picking up on the acoustic innovations of John Fahey and Jack Rose, Raymond started releasing records a little less than a decade ago. But it's on Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark, one of NPR Music's best albums of 2025, where the Cardiff-born and now Brighton-based guitarist forged an unmistakably distinct sound: a controlled recklessness that conjures spells with six strings. Exhilarating, but also terrifying.

After the dizzying shred of "Jack Parsons Blues" and the scenic storytelling of "Bliws Afon Tâf," Raymond comes up for air, suddenly aware of the audience in awe. It's just her back there, after all, with an acoustic guitar — we're lost in the trance, too. And then, as if on cue, she takes us to hell.

It took us long enough. Noah Kahan’s music has been rattling around on the Internet for the better part of a decade — in TikTok and YouTube snippets, as well as on a string of albums that culminated in his 2022 breakthrough Stick Season. The Vermont singer-songwriter became a superstar so gradually, it was easy not to fully notice him until he was selling out stadiums. Only now, in the days leading up to his tremendous fourth album, The Great Divide, is he finally making his Tiny Desk debut.

Fortunately, we seemed to grab him at or near the height of his powers. The new songs here are wonderfully incisive and catchy, as they radiate empathy for loved ones and places from his past. And the older cut, “Orange Juice,” showcases his skills as a tender balladeer whose songs have a way of literally and figuratively welcoming listeners inside.

Speaking between songs, Kahan is as funny and self-effacing as ever, whether he’s praising NPR newscaster Lakshmi Singh (always the way to our hearts), comparing the room surrounding the Tiny Desk to “Gattaca headquarters,” lamenting his own sweatiness (“I’m hoping this sweat makes it look like I’m crying”) or proposing a take-a-penny/leave-a-penny system for distributing Lexapro to other guests.

Still, the songs are the stars here — and the new ones rank among his finest work to date. Fans are surely already steeped in “The Great Divide,” with its evocative portrait of a friendship viewed in hindsight. But they’ll also get a chance to immerse themselves in two other fantastic new songs: “American Cars,” which opens this set in rousing fashion, and “Paid Time Off,” which closes out the proceedings with a majestic, solo-laden hoedown.

A natural talent, Quando Rondo was once a small child, secretly singing in the bathroom as a 9-year-old boy in Savannah, GA. His natural gravitation towards music lead to him to hip-hop; he began recording his fledgling verses on his cell phone. He quickly gained traction online, racking up millions of views on YouTube.

Fittingly, he titled his 2018 mixtape 'Life B4 Fame' with the hopes that things would change for the better once his career really took off. He was right—within two days, his mixtape had amassed more than one million streams on MyMixtapez. Things will only go up from there, and if the snippets from his forthcoming Rich Homie Quando project are any sign, he’s only only getting better with time.

When Missy Dabice sings, the words course through her entire body. Just as quickly as she screams about the cyclical nature of lust, she whispers her heartbreak and longing. Mannequin Pussy lives between those two spaces: the raw ferocity of feminine rage and the quiet moments of hopeless vulnerability. "I want to be a danger," she sighs. "I want to be adored."

When an artist comes to the Tiny Desk, they often seize upon the opportunity to reimagine their music. Here, a string quartet helps to crack these songs wide open, swelling with urgency and overflowing with emotion. "I Don't Know You" and "Split Me Open," in particular, soar with lush string arrangements, yet don't stray from the songs' uninhibited and deeply relatable appetite to be desired.

If, like me, Mannequin Pussy's Romantic found a way into your tender heart 10 years ago; thankfully, the band commemorates the anniversary by performing the title track with nostalgic appreciation. But the highlight of the show, just before "Loud Bark," lies in Dabice's deep acknowledgement of how it feels to be human right now: the pain, the grief and the sadness that swirls inside of us.

"Your rage is a part of you and you have to honor it. Give it the space to breathe," says Dabice, before she leads the audience in a primal, cathartic scream.
