Gene Simmons of KISS interviewed on The Dr. Ruth Show in 1986. I taped this when it aired as a rerun in 1987. I transferred it to DVD in the early 2000s.

1984 was an astonishingly prolific year in Prince’s career. Just months before releasing his watershed soundtrack and film, Purple Rain, Prince was deep into preparations for his massive Purple Rain Tour while also writing and recording nearly a song a day for proteges like Sheila E., The Time, and The Family. One of those singles, “Manic Monday,” would become a breakout hit for the Bangles. Their version of the song skyrocketed to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985, just behind Prince’s number 1 hit “Kiss.”

All these years later, the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs still remembers how entranced she was when she first heard Prince's original rendition of the song. "I knew it was an incredible gift," she told the New York Times. "It was like putting on the slipper in a fairy tale."

For over 30 years, she and her Bangles bandmates were some of the only people in the world to have heard it — until now.

Prince's rendition of "Manic Monday" is one of the 15 tracks on the new album Originals, a collection of Prince's versions of the hit songs he gave to other artists. Out now on Warner Records, Originals also includes Prince’s original performances of “Jungle Love,” “The Glamorous Life,” “Sex Shooter,” and more.

Together with archival footage from his vault — which captures Prince rehearsing with his band, The Revolution, for their massive Purple Rain Tour — these recordings provide a rare window into Prince’s creative process in this wildly productive era.

Kerry Hilson definitely showed potential back in the late 2000s, early 2010s. I remember when she burst on the scene in 2008 to 2010 with songs like “turning me on” featuring Lil Wayne that went platinum, “pretty girl rock” also a platinum record, and “Knock You Down” featuring Kanye West and Neyo, that went double platinum and became the #1 rnb song in the country. Her only #1 rnb song of her career. In those times Keri was seen as the new face of rnb and it seemed she was poised to carry that tittle, as she had all the qualities to do so, except the one that really mattered most. The ability to deal with the politics of the music industry and being famous in general. Mostly all unwritten ones that may have gotten her blackballed from then on. Her No Boys Allowed album and it’s final single “Lose control” feat Nelly in 2011 marked her final releases until she returned from a 9 year hiatus with information about new music on the horizon, but that new music still has yet to be released. Back then the rnb world were used to Beyonce dominating the genre on the female side all throughout the 2000s, growing into the unofficial gatekeeper of sorts and Queen of that scene, and as fans do, they grow and begin to want something new and fresh to hit the scene. Mahalia Jackson performing "Just a Closer Walk with Thee'" at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival. Her show-stopping performance during the 70th birthday tribute to Louis Armstrong was a moving finale to the star-studded concert event. This is quite likely the last filmed performance of Jackson, who passed away in January 1972. Mahalia's performance of "Closer Walk" is dedicated to Armstrong, who joins her on-stage for a rousing finish.

This performance is from the original film "Louis Armstrong at Newport" produced and directed by George Wein and Sid Stiber. The original, first-generation 16mm film footage was transferred to high definition in 2008. Edited versions of the film, presented under the title "Good Evening Ev'rybody: In Celebration of Louis Armstrong," have aired on PBS, BBC, and other broadcasters worldwide, and a feature-length version was distributed on DVD.
