The choreographed dance moves to Tyla's sexy single "Water" put the musician's fusion of pop and amapiano on the map. In a new interview for Rolling Stone's The Breakdown, the South African star shares how she made the viral track — and what she looks for when making music.

"I'm usually driven by the beat. When someone plays me a beat, it has to grab me in order for me to even want to work on it," she says. "I love listening to beats singing random things that come to me and then listening back and choosing what fits best. After, the words just come."

Tyla said she likes songs that aren't "direct" lyrically but instead prefers ones that "make you feel something."

"With 'Water,' I just wanted a summer song that everybody could vibe to and have fun to," she says. "The meaning of the song is frisky: It's me letting a guy know, 'Show me what you got to offer. I'm done with all the talk.' Men will just talk and talk and talk."

Tyla explains that she went into the studio knowing she wanted "a summer banger." She cut the track in Cape Town and couldn't "stop playing it after" and she was shook by the response to the song during live shows.

In a career spanning over 40 years it seems inconceivable that they have never performed at London’s most famous venue The Royal Albert Hall. That changed in June 2016 as the band appeared with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra adding some a classical vibe to hits like These Dreams, Alone and What about Love, they also reinvented old favourites like Dreamboat Annie and Magic Man while rocking the house to the rafters with Crazy on You and Barracuda. One of house music’s most colourful hitmakers is paradoxically also a hero of electronic music’s darker underground. With four Special Request albums released in 2019 and no sign of letting up, Gabriel Szatan travels to Leeds to find out how Paul Woolford juggles it all.
Paul Woolford is the King of Leeds, Angel of the North, an alias-switching dynamo with a superhuman work rate, one of dance music’s most popular and seemingly indestructible characters. But it wasn’t always this way.

2020 marks Woolford’s 20th year as a producer, a nice synchronicity with 20:20 Vision, the label on which he released his first smash, “Erotic Discourse.” Since that breakout moment in 2006, Woolford has been on a consistent upward curve, becoming a durable fixture of big-league house and techno. He has a litany of anthems to his name that countless ravers will recognise: “Stolen,” the ten-minute brain-vaporizing voyage that wowed Carl Craig; “You Already Know,” a sweetly hit to accompany sunkissed road trips and sundowns on Iberian beaches; “Untitled,” a dynamic piano house slammer with a name-calling hook; and “Hang Up Your Hang Ups,” perhaps the most typically Woolford anthem of all — a full-fat banger with crunchy low end and soaring vocal courtesy of the gone-too-soon Detroit legend Kim English.
