kwn’s debut album, 'with all due respect,' opens with a minute-long piano ballad called “bite me INTRO.” It’s a clear thesis statement of the don’t-give-a-f*ck attitude that’s earned the East London native serious recognition from R&B fans. Music was everywhere during her childhood: her dad was a DJ, and her step-grandfather would wake a young Khy Wilson by softly playing the piano. After attending a local arts college, she tried her hand at rap, eventually got signed, but felt boxed in by industry expectations. It’s no surprise the independent route suited kwn. She secured funding for her breakout track, “Worst Behavior,” through savvy social media marketing and a hustler mindset. 12,000 early sales of the future hit covered the cost of proper mixing and mastering, and helped bankroll her full-length debut. Then came the “bow" moment, as kwn calls it, when everything popped off. The apex was the “Worst Behavior” music video, which features a steamy makeout scene with fellow R&B rascal Kehlani, sending the internet into a frenzy. Over the course of nine tracks on 'with all due respect,' it becomes clear that beneath her hard-edged exterior, kwn craves authentic connection. Whether it’s a fleeting night out or daily rounds of bedsheet tussles, there’s a sense that something deeper simmers beneath the surface of her explicit desires. “Things that you said, said with your chest / But before we start breaking,” she sings on “do what I say,” adding nuance to the lusty dynamic. On “stand on it,” she admits, “I do get jealous,” but quickly clarifies, “I’m not embarrassed.” That tension - between vulnerability and bravado - is front and center in this DSCVR performance of “back of the club,” delivered with the kind of effortless cool that’s bound to leave viewers hot under the collar.
