Toots Thielemans and Bert van den Brink (30-12-1998) - SESJUN • World of Jazz Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

On April 29, 2022 we commemorate Toots Thielemans' 100th birthday!

Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor, Baron Thielemans (29 April 1922 – 22 August 2016), known professionally as Toots Thielemans, was a Belgian jazz musician. He was mostly known for his chromatic harmonica playing, as well as his guitar, whistling skills, and composing. According to jazz historian Ted Gioia, his most important contribution was in "championing the humble harmonica", which Thielemans made into a "legitimate voice in jazz". He eventually became the "preeminent" jazz harmonica player.

His first professional performances were with Benny Goodman's band when they toured Europe in 1949 and 1950. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1951, becoming a citizen in 1957. From 1953 to 1959 he played with George Shearing, and then led his own groups on tours in the U.S. and Europe. In 1961 he recorded and performed live one of his own compositions, "Bluesette", which featured him playing guitar and whistling. In the 1970s and 1980s, he continued touring and recording, appearing with musicians such as Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Werner, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Mina Mazzini, Elis Regina, Quincy Jones, George Shearing, Natalie Cole, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and Paquito D'Rivera.

This performance of Toots Thielemans with Dutch pianist Bert van den Brink was broadcast in the TROS tv program 'TROS SESJUN on 30 December 1998.

James Brown - It's A Man's Man's Man's World - Live 1981- Long version • World o Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

"It's a Man's Man's Man's World" is a song by James Brown and Betty Jean Newsome. Brown recorded it on February 16, 1966 in a New York City studio and released it as a single later that year. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its title is a word play on the 1963 comedy film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
This is the exiting original long live version of this song as performed by James Brown and the JBs at the second performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1981, held in the Congress center in The Hague, the Netherlands. It is also availbale on this channel in a short version.

This second concert is extraordinary and sees a James Brown that really gives everything to get the audience to their feet. The first concert that we published on 5 October 2017 which was recorded by AVRO Television earlier that 11th July 1981 saw a lame audience that did not know how to react. In this fantastic video we see what James Brown could do with any audience.
Also this concert has a different tracklisting including a sensational 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World' in which he pays tribute to great artists who died such as Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and especially to John Lennon, who died some 6 months earlier.

Gerry Mulligan Big Band - Bweebida Bobbida - 16 july 1982 • World of Jazz Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

“Bweebida Bwobbida” (sometimes spelled “Bweebida Bobbida”) was originally conceived as a vehicle for larger ensembles by its composer, Gerry Mulligan. Based on the well-known chord changes to the standard “I Got Rhythm,” he first recorded it for Prestige and the baritone saxophonist continued to tinker with its arrangement over the next 11 years, recording a brilliant quartet version with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer for the album the Gerry Mulligan Songbook. He asked Brookmeyer to arrange it for the critically acclaimed Concert Jazz Band in the early 1960s. Brookmeyer retained the inventive improvised counterpoint between he and the baritone saxophonist, but he greatly extended and revamped the work, adding some pep to the chart while also leaving room to show case soloists like alto saxophonist Gene Quill. Mulligan recorded a final quartet version with Brookmeyer during the making of the Phillips LP Spring is Sprung in 1962, though this version remains unissued.
This recording was made at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, The Netherlands on 16 July 1982

"East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)" is a popular song written by Brooks Bowman, an undergraduate member of Princeton University's Class of 1936, for the 1934 production of the Princeton Triangle Club's production of Stags at Bay. It was published in 1934 and soon became a hallmark of the Princeton Tigertones, one of Princeton University's all-male a cappella groups. The standard is also sung by the Princeton Nassoons, Princeton University's oldest a cappella group.

"East of the Sun" was first recorded by Hal Kemp for Brunswick Records on Dec. 1, 1934. A favorite song on campus, it has been arranged in many different formats, and continues to be featured on student group albums as recently as 2010. Since the 1950s the song has become a popular staple of many jazz musicians.

Pointer Sisters - Steam Heat - 12 april 1974 • World of Jazz Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

RIP Bonnie Pointer.
“Steam heat” is a show tune written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the Broadway musical “The Pajama Game” in 1954. The Pointer sisters were four sisters (Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June) and children of the Pastor Eltion Pointer. They started their singing career in the beginning of the 1960s in the church of their dad. The sisters grew up in a ministerial family. Listening to secular music was strongly forbidden at home. Only gospel music was allowed. Once June brought an Elvis Presley single “All Shook Up” home which was only possible because of the b-side; “Crying in the Chapel.” This footage came from the TV-program: Music All In. The performance has been very well preserved by the AVROTROS and digitized by InnArchive.

To honour Bonnie Pointer who unfortunately died this week we publish this video from their 12 April 1974 performance on the (Dutch) AVRO tv-program Music All-In

Stan Getz Quintet - Litha - 13 July 1980 • World of Jazz Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

Stan Getz (born Stanley Gayetski; February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as "one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists"
Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he popularized bossa nova in America with the hit single "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964).

At the North Sea Jazz Festival Stan Getz played with four young musicians. The Line-up of his Quintet is:

Stan Getz (soprano sax, tenor sax),
Chuck Loeb (guitar),
Mitch Forman (piano),
Brian Bromberg (bass),
Mike Hyman (drums )

Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, The Netherlands, 13 July, 1980

He played among others: ‘Litha' (a Chick Corea composition)

‘Chappaqua’

Buddy Rich Big Band Live At The North Sea Jazz Festival • 15-07-1978 • World of Jazz Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

Line up:
Buddy Rich (Drums)
Tom Warrington (Bass guitar)
Bob Kaye (Piano)
John Marshall, Mike McGovern, Mark Ohlsen, Chuck Schmidt (Trumpets)
Dale Kirkland, Glenn Franke, George Moran (Trombones)
Steve Marcus, Gary Pribeck, Chuck Wilson, Andy Fusco, Greg Smith (Saxes)

Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuosic technique, power, groove, and speed.
Rich was born in Manhattan, New York, to Jewish vaudevillians Bess (Skolnik) and Robert Rich.:6 His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at the age of one. He began playing drums in vaudeville when he was 18 months old, billed as "Traps the Drum Wonder." At the peak of Rich's childhood career, he was reportedly the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world (after Jackie Coogan). At 11 he was performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction, and went so far as to claim that instruction would only degrade his musical
talent. He also never admitted to practicing, claiming to play the drums only during performances and was not known to read music. He expressed great admiration for, and was influenced by, the playing of Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Dave Tough, and Jo
Jones, among others.

Rich first played jazz w ith a major group in 1937 with Joe Marsala and guitarist Jack Lemaire. He then played with Bunny Berigan (1938) and Artie Shaw (1939), and even instructed a 14-year-old Mel Brooks in drumming for a short period when
playing for Shaw. At 21, Rich participated in his first major recording with the Vic Schoen Orchestra (the band that backed the Andrews Sisters). In 1938, he was also hired to play in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra where he met and performed with Frank Sinatra. In 1942, Rich left the Dorsey band to join the United States Marine Corps. He rejoined the Dorsey group after leaving the Marines two years later. In 1946, Rich formed his own band with financial support from Sinatra, and continued to lead different groups on and off until the early fifties.

The Buddy Rich Big Band in the 1940s In addition to Tommy Dorsey (1939–42, 1945, 1954–55), Rich also played with Benny Carter (1942), Harry James (1953-56–62, 1964, 1965), Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, and Jazz at the Philharmonic, as well as leading his own band and performing with all-star groups. In the early fifties Rich played with Dorsey and began to perform with trumpeter Harry James, an association which lasted until 1966. In 1966, Rich left James to develop a new big band. For most of the period from 1966 until his death, he led successful big bands in an era when the popularity of big bands had waned from their 1930s and 1940s peak. In this later period, Rich continued to play clubs and stated in multiple interviews that the great majority of his big band's performances were at high schools, colleges and universities, with club performances done to a much lesser degree. Rich also served as the session drummer for many recordings, where his playing was often much more understated than in his own big-band performances. Especially notable were Rich's sessions for the late-career comeback recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, on which he worked with pianist Oscar Peterson and his famous trio featuring bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis.

Kassa Overall: Tiny Desk Concert
Kassa Overall: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

Suraya Mohamed | April 5, 2023
Kassa Overall is no stranger to NPR. Back in 2020 he was a featured vocalist and percussionist on the Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science Tiny Desk concert and in the same year he scored the original music for the first season of NPR Music's Louder Than A Riot podcast. (His catchy theme song has been remixed by producer Suzi Analogue for the show's second season.) Now, Kassa's back again, leading his own band and doing what he always does — pushing musical boundaries and finding new ways to express himself through a unique blend of experimental hip-hop-infused jazz.

This Tiny Desk starts with two cuts from ANIMALS, Kassa's May release that will be featured on his upcoming summer tour. On "Ready To Ball," pianist Ian Finkelstein opens with a chord progression that signals bebop but quickly moves into a more dynamic, experimental sound with hypnotic meter changes and surprising interludes.

"Make My Way Back Home" is a beautiful song featuring Nick Hakim's sultry vocals overtop a captivating rhythmic foundation with an avant-garde yet familiar feel. I especially love the catchy melodic line, one you can sing along to even if only hearing this tune for the first time.

Then, Kassa's outstanding drum solo on "Find Me" moves into a driving percussive groove that breaks for a short rap interlude and thoughtful melodic moments featuring soprano saxophonist Tomoki Sanders and vocalist J. Hoard. "Who's on the Playlist" is an oldie but goodie from Kassa's 2019 record, Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz, which finishes the set with a continued virtuosic display of musicianship, lyricism and artistic innovation.

Peter Frampton: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Peter Frampton: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 4 Streams • 3 years ago

March 17, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • I could walk by Peter Frampton on the street and not recognize him. His long blond hair, which shines like a halo on his album Frampton Comes Alive! may be gone, but as soon as he sat behind the Tiny Desk and began singing, 1976 came rushing back. I worked in a record store the year Frampton Comes Alive! came out, and it was one of those records that seemed to have universal appeal. We sold a ton of copies of that double live album and I can still remember the label and number (A&M 3703) from having written it on countless sales tickets.

Forty years later, on the new album Acoustic Classics, Peter Frampton has taken those electric guitar songs, some linked forever to that unmistakable talk box effect, and stripped them down to their essence, just a few acoustic guitars and his voice. At the Tiny Desk, played by Peter and guitarist Gordon Kennedy, these songs still thrill. We had a lot of coworkers and friends come watch Frampton come alive again. It was electrifying to hear a room full of people spontaneously burst out singing on the chorus of "Baby, I Love Your Way" especially when many of those singing weren't alive when that song came out.

Songwriters could spend their lives hoping to write a song that connects for the ages, but Peter Frampton told the NPR crowd that two of his biggest hits came to him on a beach on the same day. The notion that one day the magic is there and the next it's gone could haunt a songwriter, but not Peter Frampton. On this day I saw one of the happiest musicians walk into our building, a man filled with joy, eager to share his tunes he's sung over and over for much of his adult life, with a fresh attitude. It was enchanting.
