(The boogie sound, down upon down)
Baby, slice it right
(The boogie sound, down upon down)
We're gonna groove tonight

"Double Dutch Bus" is a 1981 funk song by Frankie Smith, made famous for its extensive use of the "izz" infix form of slang. The song title represents a combination of two institutions in Smith's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, neighborhood: the double Dutch game of jump rope played by neighborhood kids, and the SEPTA bus system that was a backbone of the local transportation network (and for which Smith had unsuccessfully applied for a bus driving position; the Transpass referred to in the song is an actual SEPTA pass). Smith and co-writer Bill Bloom persuaded contacts at WMOT Records to finance the song, and it was recorded in the summer of 1981, engineered by Gene Leone. The song rocketed to popularity in a matter of weeks. On the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, it held the number one spot for eight weeks. It also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number 30 in the summer of 1981.[1] The record has received two separate gold certifications, one for sales of the 7" edit, and a second gold record for sales of the 12" single.

DJ (Columbus Short), an amazing underground street dancer, hasn't been in college for a day before he's entranced by a lovely co-ed, April (Meagan Good).Working as a gardener to pay the bills, DJ doesn't fit in with the wealthier students around campus, but one thing does catch his attention -- the rival fraternity competitions known as "stepping." With April's help, DJ learns about the legacy and heritage behind the fraternities and decides to join up. Now part of an official step group, DJ must balance rehearsals, work, and school, while at the same time winning the heart of the girl of his dreams. With the National Step Championship drawing closer, DJ must learn to stop dancing as an individual, and to start stepping as part of a team.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

July 8, 2020 | Bobby Carter - This was slated to be Roddy Ricch's summer. He was having the breakout moment that I've seen from so many other Compton emcees before him. The young man born Rodrick Moore Jr. snagged his first Grammy. He had multiple hit songs on the radio, including the biggest song in the world in "The Box," which spent 11 weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 and will probably go down as the last pre-COVID club anthem. His live show refuted any doubts of his true musicianship and he was primed to touch every festival stage this season. No one could have anticipated in December how prophetic his debut album title — Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial — would be.

Roddy was originally booked to play the Tiny Desk in June, but once the cancellation of festival season was fully realized, he and his team began mapping out something special for our home series. He flexes his range from the beginning, playing a keyboard atop a desk at famed auto garage West Coast Customs in California. Backed by the juggernaut musical collective 1500 or Nothin', this set exhibits the many dimensions of Please Excuse Me..., from "Bacc Seat" (featuring an appearance from Ty Dolla $ign) to the stunning rework of "War Baby." Many factors have contributed to the dissolution of a 'normal' summer in 2020, but Roddy Ricch is determined to prove that it's still his time to shine.

SET LIST
"Perfect Time"
"Bacc Seat" (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
"High Fashion"
"War Baby"

Lyrics:

I put your picture on my mirror,
Start to blush when somebody says your name
In my stomach there's a pain
See you walk in my direction I go the other way
I start to stutter when I speak
Try to stand but my knees go weak
What happening to me in the dark can you tell me what it means
I lay my head on my pillow
Staring out the window
Wish on a star for a sign
It's the reason why

You're always on my mind
When you come around I get shy
When I see you, when I see you
Never know when you might walk by
So I gotta be right on time
When I see you when I see you
"

When you think of the 90’s R&B sound, a group that probably comes to mind is Hi-Five. The group seemed destined to be prominent figures of the New Jack Swing era, especially after the release of their 1990 chart-topping single, “I Like the Way (The Kissing Game).” Although they blessed us with five studio albums and continued releasing music well into the 2000s, the group suffered multiple setbacks.

Evanescence's first big year out, 2003, was a whirlwind rush to the top for the band. Their debut single, "Bring Me to Life," landed on the Daredevil soundtrack and subsequently made deft parkour moves up to Number Five on the Billboard singles chart thanks to the way the band blended nü-metal aggression with frontwoman Amy Lee's gothic leanings. Within a few months, their first album, Fallen climbed to Number Three on the Billboard 200 (eventually, it would be certified seven-times platinum), thanks to the similarly dusky hard-rock single "Going Under" and the classical-leaning ballad "My Immortal."

We recently sat down with One of the hardest-working singers in Rock, John Corabi, John chatted with our own 'Keri McCherry' where he candidly and openly about his time in MC. Nikki's beef with him, and his thoughts on Mick Mars retiring from touring. Staying on as a second guitarist after Vince Neil's Return, and much more. John pulled no punches and did not avoid any questions that were put to him.

Chorus:
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you, one night will remind you
How we touched and went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you, true love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched and went our separate ways
