Today’s feature is a group that could be the poster child for making something outta nothing and going after what you desire with everything you have. Seeing everything they went through in their music career, you have to have that mindset in order to not just win, but make it through it all and still end up in god position. When you hear the name Nappy Roots, you first remember their popular songs from back in the early 2000s that took over radio and countdown shows, giving us a glimpse of what life was like on the other side of the train tracks, where it wasn’t about the glitz, glamour and fast pace of the city life. Country boys that weren’t used to shiny things and popping bottles looking rich. It was about hard work and getting out what you put in, accountability. The group represented that while showing us how much of a good time being country was at the same time because there was no pressure to live up to a certain expectation. Though these country boys went to college, they’d be taught a very important lesson in business after the fact, signing what they describe as the worst record deal in the history of hip hop with Atlantic Records. Shenseea - Waistline. An exclusive live performance for Vevo.

Dancehall culture is as much about personality as it is about musical talent, and Shenseea has both in spades. The Jamaica native can certainly hit the notes, but she’s just as impressive leading crowds with toasts, boasts and more than a little brashness. Maxed-out confidence is right there in the name of last year’s debut: ‘ALPHA,’ an album throughout which the “Diana” singer puts her own desires first. “I’m the one you want/I’m the one you need,” she proclaims on the Tyga-assisted album opener “Target.” Two tracks later she’s going full sexual self-empowerment on “Deserve It,” a pop-leaning bop with a breathy hook a la TLC and Destiny’s Child. That features include both Caribbean staples such as Beanie Man and Sean Paul alongside hip-hop luminaries 21 Savage and Megan Thee Stallion tells you she’s aiming for full crossover cred. “Waistline” certainly does the job, and the only thing this performance is missing is a sweaty crowd dancing alongside her. Advice: Do some toe touches before heeding Shen’s commands.
