NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. This celebration highlights the beautiful cornucopia of Black music and our special way of presenting it. We hope you enjoy.

"Just bear with me while I just enjoy this and soak in it," GIVĒON admits with a laugh. Switching between the demeanors of a seasoned, nonchalant crooner and a giddy-grinned newbie, the fast-rising R&B star makes a point to show his humility during his long-awaited debut at Tiny Desk.

Accompanied by a minimal, masked-up band and only one background vocalist (a fellow Pisces at that), the baby-face baritone fills the set with resonance and light. He radiates gratitude with every note. Against a blue, moody backsplash of projected music video stills, GIVĒON notes the divine timing of this performance. "Any moment to do this would be special," he says between songs, "but I think Black History Month ... just celebrating Black culture for this month, I'm really excited to get to do this on this platform."

Through the throes of the pandemic, GIVĒON has remained remarkably busy. In a span of eight months, the Long Beach, Calif. newcomer has released two solid EPs, the Grammy-nominated Take Time and When It's All Said And Done. (The latter included one of our favorite songs of 2020, "Still Your Best.") For his Tiny Desk (home) concert, he borrows from each project to arrange a tantalizing 14-minute sampler — showing off just enough to get you to do your Googles and discover more.

Much like the moment he's trying to savor, GIVĒON's strength as a singer-songwriter is his ability to make his listener feel suspended in time. As fans quickly discovered on his breakthrough "Chicago Freestyle" feature last year, the peaks and valleys of GIVĒON's tone and the satisfying patterns of his runs don't just serenade; They immerse, they engulf. GIVĒON's star rising during a time of such sustained uncertainty is no accident, either. Between vulnerable storytelling and clear vocals, GIVĒON's work provides so many with what they're craving right now: intimacy and consistency.

Pearl Jam on their long awaited Gigaton tour featuring Eddie Vedder finally returned to the stage with the rest of Pearl Jam: Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Matt Cameron. Klinghoffer also joined the band, as he’s doubling as a touring multi-instrumentalist on this trek. The stage, while massive, was sparse with the exception of a giant arc of lights that changed colors to fit the mood of each song.

Pearl Jam’s return to arena play has been long-awaited, and where better than—in Eddie Vedder’s words—“The Fabulous F–king Forum!” Not since 2016 has the band played an arena tour, so while it was nearly impossible to recall the power and raw energy that is a Pearl Jam arena show after a six-year hiatus, muscle memory alone was enough to fill the seats, even for the late-arriving California crowd. Eddie Vedder treated early concertgoers to a solo performance of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” before introducing opening act Pluralone.

A short while later, the lights dimmed and Pearl Jam took the stage as Eddie Vedder, the very picture of cool in a black leather jacket, serenaded fans with “Of The Girl”. This rare and highly sought opener from the band’s sixth studio effort, Binaural, was indicative that Pearl Jam might dig a little deeper into the catalog on the tour’s second night, and indeed they did just that, playing songs from each of their first six albums over the course of the 22-song set.

No one holds a crowd quite like Vedder. The band retreated to the shadows as story time began, Vedder recounting how he missed a performance of The Wall in this building because his friend forgot the tickets as Mike McCready punctuated the tale with a quick lick from “Wish You Were Here”.

After the Gossard-penned “Buckle Up”, Vedder next shouted out original drummer Dave Krusen who was believed to be in the building before a searing “Even Flow” in which guitarist Mike McCready melted faces as he poured out years worth of pent up aggression from the band’s forced hiatus. As it usually does, a quick story on author Howard Zinn preceded Lost Dogs’ “Down”.

After a brief encore break, the band ripped into “State of Love and Trust” before facing the back and evoking more tears during “Wishlist”. “Do The Evolution” was rowdy as ever before my wife’s all time favorite, “Black”, a song she’s never seen live but that the band is guaranteed to play whenever I’m there alone. Sorry, babe, but this one’s for you.

As is usually the case, “Alive” was played under the full glow of the house lights as the PJ faithful reveled in the song that set this train in motion 31 years ago. More than anything, “Alive” reminds me life is a gift and every live Pearl Jam performance is a blessing, inspiring me to treat my neighbor as I’d like to be treated and to make the most of every moment. “Yellow Ledbetter” punctuated the evening, McCready giving a highly intimate solo from his knees at the end of the stage as Vedder wailed the time-honored and ne’er-understood lyrics.

During the show Eddie gave kudos to a student who barely recognized him on campus in San Diego and also "Dave" who survived a brain tumor and swore he'd make this show which he did! You can clearly see him in the crowd as well as a bunch of other smiling faces in the crowd.

today i am going to be reacting to unpopular opinions about taylor swift!!

i’ve been creating a lot of videos recently about taylor swift theories and predictions with the re-recording process. someone commented this idea on one of those videos and it seemed like it would be fun to go through and react to some of y’all’s opinions about taylor and her music.

i didn’t know what i was expecting, but some of you are really bold hahaha making fighting statements that could be pretty controversial LOL. remember that this is all in good fun and that every one is entitled to their own opinions. we all love taylor so much and identify with different songs, albums and eras :)

Latino hip-hop legend Fat Joe muscled his way out of the streets of the South Bronx with his debut album, Represent, in 1993. He radiates a different energy in 2021, sauntering in his own uptown streetwear shop, fresh fitted in pink leather and a designer bucket hat, but he's still got that old larger-than-life electricity.

A founding member of the D.I.T.C. (Diggin' In the Crates) crew, Fat Joe Da Gangsta has managed to last nearly 30 years and multiple generations in the rap game without ever giving up his lease on the top of the charts. That's no easy feat for a rapper who came out of the early '90s, and positively trailblazing for a Puerto Rican emcee without any notable predecessors. That catalog is on display in a medley of hits performed for his Tiny Desk (home) concert with the Terror Squad Band, and it's clear that Joe is amped up rocking with a live outfit that keeps the essence of his hits while infusing some salsa that reps his Latino heritage.

That crew turns the rugged "My Lifestyle" into a visceral experience with layers of nuance added by Joe's longtime DJ Ted Smooth. On the 2002 smash "What's Luv," Angelica Vila takes the spotlight singing a hook originally performed by Ashanti. "Sunshine," is an effervescent new springtime jam that was spawned by 22-year-old internet sensation Amorphous, who mashed up Luther Vandross's debut single "Never Too Much" with Rihanna's "Kiss It Better." Joe, who has always had a solid ear for new talent and a prowess for pinning down a buoyant hit record, came in and gullied this sparkling jam, renewing a glow that's been dim for this last year.

I don't recall any other artist at the Tiny Desk harmonizing their own introduction, but Philadelphia's own Jazmine Sullivan didn't waste a second, greeting us all by flexing those once-in-a-generation chops from the jump. The singer-songwriter, draped in a trench coat while her band sports all black, are nestled in the corner of a dimly lit space resembling a cabaret.

We don't see or hear much from Jazmine Sullivan until she has something to get off her chest. She drops a body of work every five years or so, shakes up the world of R&B with each offering, then quietly goes back to minding her own business. Her latest project, Heaux Tales, is a bold and timely conversation piece addressing truths regarding relationships, sex, social norms, self-worth and a myriad of other topics that women graple with. Each song is masterfully connected to another through unique yet familiar testimonies by women from all walks of life.

She starts her Tiny Desk (home) concert with three extended and reworked selections from Heaux Tales, squeezes in thee fan favorite from 2015's Reality Show, then invites Tiny Desk alum H.E.R. to the stage to close with "Girl Like Me." Ms. Sullivan, her background vocalists and H.E.R. ate this performance up and left not a crumb on the floor.
