Akiode Blessing Mariam, also known as Candy Bleakz is the foremost female rapper in the Nigerian Music scene. Known for her unrehearsed and passionate flow in Pidgin and Yoruba, her androgynous style, and unique personality. Bleakz has been fondly referred to on the streets by a string of monikers such as “Ladies' Dragon”, “Dragon Queen”, “Queen of the Streets”.
She gained her popularity as the only female emcee in the indigenous hip-hop group Street Billionaires, dropping freestyles that gained her almost 300k followers on instagram within a month. After two years with the group, she set out on her solo career dropping the 2019 banger “Owo Osu” - featuring Naira Marley and Zlatan. With over 2 million views on YouTube, Owo Osu was a street hit across Nigeria, bringing Candy mainstream attention.
Following this success, Candy Bleakz was signed under the Chocolate City/Warner Music imprint in 2020, and started her incredible trajectory almost immediately. She released both Kelegbe and Won La in 2020, which got her nominated for Best Female rapper at the Africa Music Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA). “Won La” went on to be licensed on Showtime American TV Series Flatbush Misdemeanors (2021). Other Synch placements include “Baba Nla” Charge & Bail (2021).
In 2021, Candy won the Gbedu Awards Best New Act category, and got featured on Google's International Women's Day campaign, and her image rights used by google for WNBA. Within the year she has released Kope and her official single 'Baba Nla' featuring the melodious powerhouse Teni.

Aug. 19, 2019 | Abby O'Neill -- Hailing from the southwest region of Houston and of Nigerian descent, Tobe Nwigwe made his Tiny Desk debut a family affair, with an entourage that included his seven-week old daughter. The baby was in the arms of Tobe's wife, Fat, known for her striking beauty and lead role in the magnificently directed music videos that have paved the way to Tobe's rapid growth on Instagram.
Baby Fat shared the stage with Tobe's exclusive producer and emcee, LaNell "NELL" Grant, band members and backup singers who, like soldiers in arms, performed a tight, orchestrated and musically rich set. If there were any doubters in the office, they were quickly won over.
Tobe's performance was a five-song medley sandwiched effortlessly into a 15-minute block. Launching with "Houston Tribute," he used clever and evocative wordplay to rap about coming of age in the South. Accented almost hypnotically by a trio of harmonies provided by background vocalists Luke Whitney, David Michael Wyatt and Madeline Edwards, Tobe's mindful words are like a life hack for those seeking guidance. Throughout the set he offered pleas for listeners to look past inherent hardships and evil and to keep their eyes on the prize, while he reflected on his own decision to go against his Nigerian roots and parental expectations to pursue his dreams of being a rapper.
And through it all, young Baby Fat sat silently in her mom's arms, absorbing the spiritual energy of her dad's music.

Aug. 30, 2019 | Rodney Carmichael -- "It's kinda hard to sing like that with the daylight out," The-Dream said after finishing the first number in a steamy set of songs more appropriate for the bedroom than the sunlit cubicles of NPR. Even more than the mega-hits he's written for the likes of Beyoncé ("Single Ladies") and Rihanna ("Umbrella"), the self-styled radio killa's early solo oeuvre — known as the Love trio — helped cement the songwriter's saucy way with words.
It's a love language that finds The-Dream speaking directly to the streets, even as he aims to heat things up between the sheets. That metaphorical wink was on full display when he came to the Tiny Desk to share a couple of joints from his latest release, Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2, 3.
"I know all the trappers, I know all the rappers / They who you see in the club and I'm who you love after," he sang in the opening verse of "Bedroom." Backed by keys, drums, bass and a three-piece horn section, The-Dream delivered his lyrics with that signature high-pitched whisper, just shy of a falsetto. Never one to be confused with a powerhouse vocalist, he's always been about setting the proper tone. "I definitely wouldn't give Beyoncé a run for her money, at all. Not even on my best day," he told Frannie Kelley back in 2013. "It's more emotion and feeling when it comes to me."
R&B hasn't sounded the same since The-Dream changed the game. Maybe growing up off Bankhead on Atlanta's west side gifted him with a hip-hop swag native to the soil. Indeed, it's worth remembering that he preceded the current era of melodic, sing-songy rappers who disregard traditional lyricism for raw, heart-rending delivery. And long before young MCs became obsessed with stealing your girl, The-Dream was on that, too. So it was only right that he close his set with his infidelity classic, "I Luv Your Girl": "Call it envy, I want her on me / All up in my head, now she in my bed."
And all the shawties said, aye-aye, aye-yi-yi.
