June 18, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- My first time seeing Idles ended with guitarist Mark "Bobo" Bowen frenetically dancing on a bar, his guitar still keeping time, until the swinging neck suddenly shattered some low-hanging, glass lighting fixtures. The band's set at South by Southwest was fierce and I knew it'd be a challenge trying to figure out how to bring that cathartic rage behind my desk. There was talk for a while of some members of the band strapping on pocket-sized guitar amps and beating on a single drum. But a week before this bunch of British madmen arrived at NPR, the instrument list had grown and what ensued was just about the loudest, most fun and most raucous Tiny Desk Concert in memory.

What lead singer Joe Talbot and his mates bring to their shows is a mix of love and outrage. Their songs are often bursts of fury, but the message is insightful and not intended to incite. Joe Talbot says their opening Tiny Desk song, "Never Fight A Man With A Perm," from their album Joy as an Act of Resistance, is an "exploration of the horrid corners of my past."

It only took a few seconds for Joe's face to turn blood-red; as he growled, it stayed that way for the next 13-minutes, even as he curtseyed at the end of the first song and bounced his way into the second. "Bobo" meanwhile moved from standing and pounding the bass drum to thrashing a guitar. I think a water bottle and some miscellaneous objects got knocked from the shelves while guitarist Lee Kiernan played. But watching his hyperactive movements in this confined space, it's actually hard to believe that so few things broke. "We are not the Jonas Brothers," Joe Talbot explained before their final tune. "People get confused." He said this with his charming smile and began to run in place while singing "I'm Scum," just to make it clear who they are.

As Night Songs continued to climb up the charts, the band started to get hit with restrictions from Dave’s people. Labar would recall in the book nothin’ but a good time The better our album did, the more restrictions they tried to put on us. At one point Tom was told that he was not allowed to speak in between songs. We pointed out how ridiculous that was, so then they said, “Okay, you’re allowed to say the name of the city and the name of the song.” Cinderella soon jumped to a bigger tour linking up with Bon Jovi for their slippery when wet tour and that further catapulted their album up the charts. The group also learned something valuable on that tour, how to treat other bands as Bon Jovi showed them true hospitality. It was on that tour the band befriended comedian Sam Kinison who was friendly with a lot of the hard rock bands. He was originally supposed to appear in the video for Somebody Save Me, but the guys from Bon Jovi stepped in at the 11th hour and helped the band out,
It was during their first major tour the band would be picketed by some ignorant pro-censorship types at a show in Corpus Christi. The LA Times were along for the ride writing “ Apparently they figured Cinderella, like the heavy-metal band stereotype, was a quartet of druggies preaching the turn-on ethic in concert. “I said ‘Wait a minute,’ ” “I told them that we don’t do drugs and that you won’t find one lyric on any of my songs saying we do drugs or telling people to do drugs. You won’t hear it on the albums and we don’t do that kind of stuff on stage. I said, ‘You’re picketing the wrong concert.
Apart from the few hiccups, Night Songs would sell 3 million copies and it would become the second biggest selling debut LP since Boston’s which came out 10 years prior. The album went on to sell a whopping 3 million copies, a huge feat for a debut record. The LA Times would remark in 1986 “What makes the success of “Night Songs” so impressive is that new heavy-metal bands rarely sell very well. In fact, even veteran heavy-metal bands aren’t selling well these days.
Despite the strong commercial performance, critics didn’t initially praise the band. Rolling Stone panned the album for and i quote too much pose, not punch. But the reviews did little to bother the members with Keifer telling the Spokesman review i’ve never really ever read a bad review about us or another band that i thought was fair., it’s mostly a bunch of cheap shots .
The band’s secret weapon has always been Tom Keifer. Fred Coury would reveal how the band avoided the sop****re slump telling the Eugene Register A lot of people, they go on the road for the first album, just do the tour and then, they get off the road and the record company says ‘well, we need an album’s worth of stuff. They have a couple of months to write 10 songs & it just doesn’t work that way. They force it and the album just starts being horrible.’ But with Tom, he always writes on the road. “ He would go on to say that by the time the band got off the road for their first album Keifer pretty much had second album written. Keifer would admit that a big inspiration for the group’s second record titled Long Cold Winter would be the fact that until the band got signed he hadn’t really ventured too far outside of new jersey and pennsylvania so touring and seeing new places resulted in him feeling emotions he hadn’t had before and he poured those into music. Keifer wanted to take the band in a different direction soundwise. A lot of records were going after the slick production style of album’s like bon jovi’s slippery when wet and poison’s look what the cat dragged in. He would tell an interviewer
“With Long Cold Winter, we started to think about [production] more,” “We started to have more organic instruments -- pianos and acoustics. We toned down the slickness or the processing a little bit, although that record's still pretty slick.”
Absent from the recording sessions was drummer Fred coury who Keifer claimed was too young and inexperienced at the time. But even some of the female artists who’d later become part of Lilith Fair would have to be convinced of its value. What’s funny is that Lilith Fair was not the first women’s music festival as the folky Michigan Womyn’s Festival — had already been going on for 2 decades, until it called it a day in 2015. Sheryl Crow would tell vanity fair in 2019

I remember talking to my agent about touring with another female, and the response was, “You don’t want to do that because it won’t sell tickets.”. But by the 90’s things had changed from a decade prior and either managers or record labels weren’t paying as close of attention as they should have. According to the LA Times women for the first time became the biggest purchasers of music--going from 43% in 1988 to 51.4% by 1997.

The full-fledged version of Lilith Fair kicked off in 1997 with 30 plus stops across North America with 60 plus artists. Regarding the name, it came from a biblical character, Adam’s wife who refused his orders to leave Eden. McLaughlin produced the festival in conjunction with Nettwerk Music Group's Dan Fraser and Terry McBride, and New York talent agent Marty Diamond.

It helped that Sarah had a huge album that year as well - 1997’s grammy award winning Surfacing - which featured the popular songs like “Angel” about the overdose of the Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and “building a mystery.”

The album sold 16 million copies worldwide and offered the perfect publicity to help bring some buzz to her new festival The 1997 incarnation of Lilith Phair was the top grossing touring festival of the year, outpacing lollapalooza. By the end of the decade it became the top grossing festival of the late 1990s.

Over the three years of the festival, there’d be 135 shows in cities mostly in the U.S. but along with a few dates in Canada as well. Featuring well known acts like Jewel, Sheryl Crowd, Liz Phair, Fiona Apple Paula Cole, Lisa Loeb, Jewel and Sheryl Crow.

The festival featured 3 stages - the Main Stage, Second Stage and Village Stage. The Village stage was for up and coming talent. Two artists that broke out in part thanks to their features on the Village Stage were Dido and Christina Aguilera.

Yet, even with all that commercial and artistic success, or maybe because of it, the festival came under harsh scrutiny, even from other female artists.

In a 1997 interview with Rolling Stone, Shirley Manson from Garbage criticized the tour saying:

“I think they only showed one side of who women are — it was this cozy, middle-class, we-all-love-each-other and share-a-view-of-the-world and let's-hold-hands-and-go-forth-unto-the-world and show-how-great-we-are thing. And there's a million other women who don't feel that Lilith said anything for them. That said, Lilith is important because there are women who really do need fellowship and support. Because not everyone is like me — a loudmouthed f--ker.”

In addition, the tour was attacked by music critics, the Christian right and other feminists. In the Dallas observer, critic Gina Arnold wrote “It is, in short, a total crock of sh*t.” The LA Times would highlight some other criticisms the festival dealt with including being called “Girlapalooza” . . . “Lesbopalooza” . . .

Critics of the tour called it exclusionary to men however the road crew and backup musicians were men in some cases.
The final Lilith fair in 1999 saw, Prince, who was going as “The Artist” as the time, also joined the festival for one show, performing “Everyday is a Winding Road” with Sheryl Crow. In interviews, Sarah McL often questioned why people assumed that celebrating women meant denigrating men by default. Lilith--attendees were made up of 30% men. Critics also lambasted the festival for not being diverse enough when it came to the artists on the bill, at least for the first year of the festival.

In response to these critiques and especially out of the fear that Lilith Fair would come off as simply a folk festival, festival producers who were flush with cash, greatly expanded the tiypes of artists and genres that were included in the 1998 edition including hip hop, most notably featuring missy elliott. The organizers also bumped up the number of shows from 37 to 57.
