Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World
An incredible narrative of struggle, triumph and resistance that will be brought to life through the lens of an art form that has chronicled the emotions, experiences and expressions of Black and Brown communities: Hip Hop. In the aftermath of America's racial and political reckoning in 2020, the perspectives and stories shared in Hip Hop are key to understanding injustice in the U.S. over the last half-century.
Authored by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, who famously labeled Hip Hop as “the Black CNN” for bringing the stories of the street to the mainstream, this story will include personal testimonies of the MCs, DJs, graffiti artists, filmmakers, politicians and opinion formers who created and shaped its direction as it grew from an underground movement in the Bronx to the most popular music genre in the U.S. and the fastest growing genre in the world today. Pia Beck was a natural on the piano. Without significant musical training she was asked in May 1945 as a pianist and vocalist in the Miller Sextet, with which she performed in Belgium, Germany, Sweden and the Dutch East Indies. In 1949 she started her own combo. Her first composition, 'Pia's Boogie', became an instant hit. In addition to tours through Europe, she had a permanent place in Scheveningen.
In 1952 she visited the United States for the first time, where she performed annually until 1964. She was made an honorary citizen of New Orleans and Atlanta. Colleague Oscar Peterson called her the best jazz pianist in the world.
In April 1965 she emigrated with her partner to the Costa del Sol, where she first started a piano bar. After the latter went bankrupt, she concentrated on writing travel guides and real estate. In 1975 she made her comeback as an artist in the Circustheater in Scheveningen. On September 18, 2003 (her 78th birthday) she said goodbye to the general public with a concert in restaurant Castellum Novum in Hilversum.
This performance is part of an AVRO tv special broadcast on December 17, 1968.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (Montreal, August 15, 1925 - Toronto, December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer.
His father taught him to play the trumpet and piano at the age of five. After contracting tuberculosis, he focused on the piano when he was seven. He quickly gained the reputation of a technically brilliant and melodically inventive jazz pianist, becoming a regular guest on radio programs. He made his first appearance at Carnegie Hall in 1949.
He has played with Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Ed Thigpen, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Stan Getz, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day, Clark Terry and Joe Pass, among others. An important moment in his career was when he joined the labels of impresario Norman Granz (especially Verve Records), which enabled him to collaborate with the great jazz artists of the time.
This performance which featured songs from the film West Side Story, was first broadcast on August 15, 1965 by AVRO Television, the Netherlands

Michael Leonard Brecker (March 29, 1949 – January 13, 2007) was an American jazzsaxophonist and composer. He was awarded 15 Grammy Awards as both performer and composer. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2004 and was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2007.
This is a recording of the concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival 1987 in The Hague, The Netherlands.

"Alfie" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David to promote the 1966 film Alfie. Dionne Warwick; born as Marie Dionne Warrick on December 12, 1940) is an African American singer, actress and TV-show host. Warwick belongs to the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire rock era. Dionne grew up in a very musical family in New Jersey. She started a singing group together with her aunt and her sister named: “The Gospelaires”. When The Gospelaires collaborated on a song by the Drifters, the songwriter of the song: Burt Bacharach came to listen. He discover Dionne and invited her to sing some demos. Her first single: “Don’t make me over” was released in 1962 but they had misspelled her name (Warwick instead of Warrick). Ever since she decided to keep this name.

"Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop" is a 1946 song by Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra. The song was credited to Hampton and his drummer Curley Hamner, although it was partly rewritten of Helen Humes’ hit “Be-Baba-Leba”. Once upon a time in the 1930's, Lionel Hampton (April 20, 1908 – August 31, 2002) together with Louis Armstrong and Lionel’s Orchestra were recording a new track together. This studio was also equipped with a vibraphone, which Hampton immediately played on after Armstrong asked him to do so. Hampton played the songs: “Memories of you & Shine.” Since this day, Hampton is called the first jazz vibronist of the world. The vibraphone wasn’t the only instrument Hampton mastered. Hampton was also well-known for his improvisation skills on several instruments. Some say Hampton created the start of rock and roll! Lionel Hampton was a jazz vibranist, pianist, drummer and bandleader. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.
This unique performance was recorded for the Dutch TROS TV Program 'Music-All-In' on 3 May 1974.

Ella Fitzgerald (1917 – 1996) is probably one of the best scat singers in its history. She had a long-lasting and successful career of nearly 60 years, with her last performance being in 1993. She was a jazz fan from a young age. She had this magical voice which she could transform any sad lyrics into a happy melody. Even though she didn’t had too many reasons to be happy. During her childhood she had to deal with a very aggressive stepfather and her mother killed in 1932, she ran away to Harlem to live with her aunt. According to the New York Times, she also dabbled in criminal activities, which eventually put her in an orphanage. Luckily her career went less tough on her. She won 14 Grammy Awards and a Presidential Medal of Freedom during this period. “April in Paris” was composed in 1931 on a baby grand piano located in Boccino's 54th Street rehearsal hall. This baby grand piano is now owned by Michael Adams and many pianists have recently played “April in Paris” on the same piano which it was composed on. Arguably the greatest drummer of all time, the legendary Buddy Rich exhibited his love for music through a dedication of his life to the art. His career spanned seven decades, beginning when Rich was 18 months old and continuing until his death in 1987. Immensively gifted, Rich could play with remarkable speed and dexterity despite the fact that he never received a formal lesson and refused to practise outside his performances. In this 1978 concert, with maybe his best band ever, he shows how unique he is as a performer and bandleader. The show was recorded in 1978 during the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Congresgebouw, The Hague, the Netherlands.

'Affirmation' as played by George Benson at his 1987 performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
George Benson (born March 22, 1943 is an American musician, guitarist, and singer-songwriter. He began his professional career at 21 as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt.
Benson performed many times at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
This fantastic performance was recorded by AVRO Television on 12th July, 1987 at the Garden Pavillion, Congressgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands, 12 July 1987. It also features special guest guitarist Earl Klugh.

Dorothy Donegan (April 6, 1922 – May 19, 1998) was an American classically trained jazz pianist primarily known for performing
in the stride piano and boogie-woogie style. She also played bop, swing jazz, and classical music. Obituaries for her argued that
her flamboyant personality, tendency to mix unrelated genres in the same concert, and willingness to do lounge music may have
caused her to be undervalued in jazz circles.

Clark Terry (Saint Louis (Missouri), 14 december 1920 – Pine Bluff(Arkansas), 21 februari 2015) was an American swing-and bop trumpeter and a bugel-pionier in the jazz. He played in the bigbands of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and also had his own bands.

'Walk On The Water' as performed by Gerry Mulligan at this North Sea Jazz Festival performance, is from his 1980 album 'Walk on the Water' In 1982, the album received the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
American jazz baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and his Big Band performed this composition at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Prins Willem Alexanderzaal of the Congresgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands on July 16th, 1982.
Gerry Mulligan was one of the leading arrangers in the era of cool jazz working with Miles Davis, Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Mulligan’s quartet of the early 50’s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups.
Born in New York in 1927, Mulliagan spend his life composing, arranging and playing jazz untill his untimely death on January 20, 1996.

Bhaskara is the name of a music group from Indonesia that plays musicin the Jazz-fusion genre. Formed in 1985, with the name Bhaskara 85, this group was listed as the first Indonesian music group that appeared at the prestigious arena of the North Sea Jazz Festival.

This music group appeared for the first time in Taman Ismail Marzuki, on July 2 - 3, 1985 with the initial formation: Kiboud Maulana (guitar), Udin Zach saxophonist, Bambang Nugroho and Didi Hadju as keyboard players, Karim Suweileh (drums), Perry Pattiselanno on bass, Luluk Purwanto (violin and voice), Dullah Suweileh (percussion), and the main vocalist is Nunung Wardiman who happened to study in France at the time.
They performed 12 songs, including "Live is too short to worry", "Japanese child", "Daughter", "Samba in Bali" and "Es Lilin" with a re-arrangement. Bhaskara's presence in the middle of 1985 was inextricably linked to the role of Black Maulana, who acted as the show and supervisor producer of the group.
In 1985 they left for the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, the Netherlands under the responsibility of Peter F. Gontha of PT. Bhaskara music production. It turned out that the performance of Bhaskara '85 was reasonably successful until the chairman of the North Sea Jazz Festival, Paul Acket, asked the group to return to the festival next year. For the second time, the Bhaskara 86 formation has undergone a slight change. Fortunately, Bhaskara 86 got a broader stage than the previous year. Luluk is again the star of their performance. The compositions are considered the color of personality music that is typical of its elements in Indonesia. After the North Sea Jazz Festival Bhaskara went again to the recording studio, followed by shows in various cities in the country.
