Singer/songwriter Raye came in for a Lowkey Deep interview on the 18th of October. I was definitely overrunning my time slot with her, just because what she had to say was crazy interesting! She told me, for example, how her label massively screwed her over, forcing her to work for other artists instead of her own, about the unfair treatment of mostly female vocalists in the dance industry, and her journey of finally setting herself free to create her very first album after working in the music industry for over 10 years.

In this film we pay tribute to one of the most gripping rags to riches stories ever told. Whitney Elizabeth Houston first showed the vocal range and star quality that would soon make her a legend in music. We talk to those who were close to her, retrace her steps to stardom and revisit some of her most stunning performances. Whitney Houston was so much more than a performer she was blessing for all who were touched by her sound, gentle soul and kind spirit. She was truly the Greatest Love of All.

Normani connects with Zane Lowe to discuss her highly awaited song, “Fair.” The track is Normani’s first single after her wildly successful collaboration with Cardi B on “Wild Side.” She explains that writing and singing “Fair” was a therapeutic process for her that required extreme emotional vulnerability while navigating heartbreak. The slow-simmering ballad is a step away from the singer’s usual danceable jams and provides a nice backdrop for basking in the tone and emotional texture of her voice. Los Angeles, California
1991
Two friends who had known each other since the sixth grade, Zack de la Rocha and Tim Commerford, meet a drummer named Jon Knox. Knox told them that his old bandmate, Tom Morello, was looking to start a new band after their old band, Lock Up, had broken up. Morello invited de la Rocha and Commerford, as well as a drummer named Brad Wilk, for a jam session. De la Rocha and Commerford actually used to be in a band together back in junior high, but other than that, the four had never played together before. The jam session turned into multiple jam sessions, and the next thing ya know, they had a band. De la Rocha would be the vocalist and provide the lyrics, which would undoubtedly be politically charged most of the time. By the way, he had been in multiple bands before this. Morello would play guitar. Commerford would play bass. Wilk would play drums.
They named themselves “Rage Against the Machine.” Apparently that name was originally supposed to be the name of a song and album de la Rocha had written for his previous band, Inside Out. Apparently this dude named Kent McClard also coined the phrase in a 1989 article in his zine called No Answers. Regardless, over the years many of their fans would come to view “The Machine” as any system or organization that was responsible for injustice in the world. “Rage Against the Machine” ended up being a pretty fitting name.
Their first performance was in “somebody’s living room” in Orange County, California. After that, they quickly gained a following. Not wasting any time, they recorded a 12-song demo, releasing it on cassette tape in December 1991. Throughout early 1992, the band sold the tape for $5 at their live shows, eventually selling more than 5,000 copies of them. Oh by the way, if you have one of them, ya might want to hold on to it. I saw one sold online for hundreds of dollars.
Anyway, the artwork featured images of stock market reports with a single match. The band also printed the statement “No samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this recording,” which would be printed on all later recordings they released. In the liner notes, they also referred to themselves as “Guilty Parties,” which would also be printed for all later recordings they released.
Oh, and they also sent the demo album to many major record labels, and while several wanted to sign them, they ended up signing with Epic Records. In April, they recorded their debut album at Sound City Studios in L.A. They ended up re-recording seven of the twelve songs that were on their demo. De la Rocha wrote the lyrics, which were obviously politically motivated and attacked multinational corporations, cultural imperialism, and government oppression. They seemed to represent a leftist voice that had become less prominent in the 1990s. Tom Morello’s guitar work was inventive, to say the least. In the studio, he was constantly experimenting with the weird new sounds his guitars could make. Garth Richardson produced. After leaving the studio, the band hit the road, playing a notable show opening for Porno for Pyros at one of their first ever gigs. In October, they toured Europe, and by that time the hype for them was already building.
Epic released their self-titled debut studio album on November 3, 1992. The first single, “Killing in the Name” ended up being a huge radio hit.

This Tiny Desk concert was part of Tiny Desk Fest, a four-night series of extended concerts performed in front of a live audience and streamed live on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
Dec. 2, 2019 | Sidney Madden -- "I'm gonna get real comfortable with y'all, so I'm need y'all to get real comfortable with me," Megan Thee Stallion told the excited Tiny Desk Fest crowd as soon as she assumed her position behind the desk. After promptly switching out her patent leather heels for some fuzzy Louis Vuitton slippers, she let the room know, "Now, don't be scared to get ratchet."
From there, the Houston rapper wasted no time demonstrating why she's a superstar in the making. Megan exuded irresistible charisma, cracking jokes with the crowd and rattling off explicit bars from her award-winning mixtape, Fever, for the live audience watching on YouTube and social media.
From "Hot Girl Summer" to the platinum-selling "Cash S***," Hot Girl Meg's raunchy hits took on new life thanks to a live backing band, Brooklyn's Phony Ppl, who seamlessly blend jazz, R&B and hip-hop. Midway through the spirited set, Megan and Phony Ppl surprised the audience by premiering an unreleased collaboration, a bouncy banger titled "F***** Around." After the first verse/chorus, the adoring crowd was singing along as if they'd known the song for years.
It was the first time Megan performed with a live band in public, but then again, there's been a lot of firsts over the past year. This time last fall, Megan was rapping her heart out at local shows, balancing classes at Texas Southern University and occasionally dropping a fire freestyle video from a suburban cul-de-sac driveway. Since then, the brilliant and bodacious rapper ascended to major festival stages, became one of the most sought-after features on other stars' songs, and electrified late-night television audiences.
Though she's dubbed herself a stallion because of her tall and voluptuous frame (Meg stands 5 feet 10 inches without heels,) the 24-year-old rapper has proven herself to be a workhorse when it comes to consistency. Her viral 2019 freestyles shot her online exposure through the roof and whichever alter ego she chooses in the moment — Tina Snow, Hot Girl Meg, Stalli — she's maintained the spotlight all year thanks to a steady stream of new music, an engaging personality and her own viral social media campaign, Hot Girl Summer.
Though she's usually known for extensive twerking during her stage performances, at the Tiny Desk, Meg played up a different skill set: impeccable timing and lung capacity. "Yall talk about Meg's knees but sis breath control is pretty impressive too," one viewer tweeted out during the live video stream.
Megan's lyrical content lies in subverting established sexual dynamics and no matter the level of raunch she deploys, empowering women remains the artist's manifesto. Co-signs from all across hip-hop, from Q-Tip to Nicki Minaj to Chance the Rapper, have only bolstered her appeal and validated her bars in the eyes of the genre's cultural gatekeepers.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.
Dec. 7, 2020 | Felix Contreras -- The Austin-based rock band Black Pumas is having a good 2020. The group, led by singer Eric Burton and guitarist Adrian Quesada, was just nominated for three Grammys, including album of the year for Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition), and both record of the year and best American roots performance for the track "Colors." The band's turn behind a tiny desk (and chair) shows why its debut album — now more than a year old — is receiving so much recognition right now.
Black Pumas' gritty, retro-soul groove is on full display, while the intensity level builds gradually throughout this four-song set. It's clear why the band's live shows have won over fans. From the opening strains of "Red Rover," Burton digs deep and by the time we get to the ballad "OCT 33," he's burning with old-school soul heartbreak.
Quesada's guitar is the perfect call-and-response foil, while the entire band — complete with two powerful back-up singers — calls to mind soul classics, but with a groovy new sheen.
I've seen some of Black Pumas' shows in recent years and the band gets better every time out. The power of this Tiny Desk (home) concert shows that they always bring it, no matter the size of the audience.

Stonebwoy has given his legions of fans the perfect Christmas souvenir at his annual Bhim Concert which took place on Friday, December 23 at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
Apart from what Stonebwoy brought to the table, other Ghanaian artists such as Laruso, Epixode, Yawtog, Vanilla music, Sarkodie, Fameye, D-Black, Efya, MzVee, Mr Drew, Tiny, and Darkovibes gave fans more than they bargained for.
Additionally, Jamaican musician Busy Signal and South Africa’s Costa Titch were also present to entertain the charged crowd.
The Bhim president came onto the stage to a clamour and cheers from the big audience, and he did not disappoint them as he delivered top-notch performances from his rich catalogue back to back.

At the midpoint of Vince Staples' Tiny Desk (home) concert, he gazes through the sun-soaked windows of his Hollywood Hills location and pauses. "You should see this view – I don't live here," he exclaims with pride. "I would never live here." As to why he wouldn't give in to the spoils of success and relocate to a fancy spot in the Hills or Calabasas, he explains in the lyrics of the song that follows, "THE SHINING": I could never do it / I'm too active. That sentiment, the push-pull relationship with his North Long Beach home base, is a dominant theme of his new self-titled album, which he tells NPR is "the clearest expression yet of who he is."
Despite years-long demand from our audience on YouTube, this was the perfect time for a Vince Staples Tiny Desk performance. We've very rarely seen him perform with a band in the past. Then there's the sound of his new work – Kenny Beats, seen playing bass, handled the bulk of the production of the album, Staples' most melodic to date. The band, outfitted in blue khaki suits, was able to recreate the sound of Vince Staples seamlessly (it's mostly made up of players from the album), and coast wonderfully through this four-song set, punctuated by Vince's signature, tongue-in-cheek humor between songs. Always willing to share the spotlight with future stars (see Snoh Aalegra), he closes with the assistance of another on the horizon, the singer Fousheé, on "TAKE ME HOME."

Stepping into a DMV when you're about to take your first driver's test, while nerve wracking, is something of a milestone. And Olivia Rodrigo has been hitting milestones with frequency this year: her first album SOUR debuted at the top of the charts in May after the success of three previously released singles, most notably the viral "drivers license" (hence the DMV locale and its "interesting vibes.") Her pop stardom may seem sudden, but Rodrigo has been entranced by music and songwriting for the majority of her 18 years, as if she's been observing the right moves from the backseat of the car until it was time for her to get behind the wheel.
Rodrigo and her band take on the Tiny Desk mentality as they experiment with arrangements throughout this performance, embracing new sounds for her songs. The set begins with an acoustic version of the pop-punk-ish single "good 4 u," and a similar setup continues with the addition of an echoey, electric guitar in "traitor." "drivers license" features only Rodrigo and her keyboard, a shift from the recorded version well-known for Dan Nigro's production and the ever-present beeping of a car door sensor. "deja vu" starts softly with just an acoustic guitar until the chorus ramps up to a full band after she exclaims, "Do you get deja vu, huh?"
SOUR tells the story of a first heartbreak, one that inspires an intense anguish most accessible when you're a teenager. That open wound, empty-chest feeling of a breakup, especially when you're as young as Rodrigo, is difficult to shake. The album allowed listeners to bask in Rodrigo's heartache as if it were their own, but as she dances around an empty DMV and laughs along to a song about betrayal, she proves that time heals all wounds.

There is a sly, casual sense of humor that permeates the music of Mikaela Mullaney Straus, who writes and performs as King Princess. Her songs mix the emotions of crushing love and lust with playful asides of self-deprecation, all of which make for a unique, self-assured style. And that self-assuredness is on full display in the indie pop singer's Tiny Desk concert, featuring King Princess performing three songs from her most recent album, Hold On Baby.
Lyrics like, "You look the same. Did you stop smoking weed? Or trying to please your dad?" from the opening "Cursed" — an ode to the difficulties of encountering an old, toxic friend — burn a little brighter in the naked, largely acoustic sound of King Princess' set. Partway through the next song, the loving "Winter is Hopeful," explicitly inspired by the artist's girlfriend, she takes a beat to laugh at a set of bar chimes being rung to perfection. "I love that," she says, before returning to sing, her voice vibrating with a soulful urgency.
"If you're feeling saucy today, you can join in with the band," King Princess says before her finale, "Let Us Die," a punchy, fuzzed-out pop-rock song on the record that transforms here into a guitar-strummed jam session. "If the only way to love you is to let us die," she sings, her lyrics pulling together images of a break-up that's like a car driven off a cliff, poison-drinking and fingers stuck in sockets, "I will if I have to." Is this girl for real? If the gut-punching confidence with which King Princess sings here is any indication, yes, she is.

From the line up of traditional Colombian instruments to the card playing interlude, every second of Feid's Medellín, Colombia pool hall performance invokes the feeling of charlando and cantando, chatting and singing, with friends.
Seamlessly anchoring all five tracks with a bass-emulating acoustic guitar and cajón-driven dembow, the new guard reggaeton royal brings unique instrumentation and culturally significant visuals to this Tiny Desk (home) concert for a deeply authentic portrait of a star on the rise baring a sonic piece of his soul to the world.
Flexing his multi-instrumentalist background, Feid brings in a new instrument for each arrangement of his hit tracks to represent the five different regions of Colombia in a comprehensive homage to his home. He opens with su propio region, using a tiple guitar from the Andean region on "JORDAN IV." Moving to the Llanos, his band breaks out a harp for a beautiful rendition of "TE MATA." He pulls in a tambor alegre on "VACAXIONES" to represent cumbia from the Caribbean region. Pausing for quick brindis, taking a shot, he closes out the show with two heartfelt numbers: First, an accordion-backed, vallenato version of "AMOR DE MI VIDA" for the Atlantic coastal region, and then a final pivot to the Pacific coastal region he mixes in a marimba de chonta on "SI TÚ SUPIERAS," before leaving the hall and riding off on a motorcycle.
The Colombian artist utilizes his full 15-minute set to depict an artistic and intentional musical image of his home and its rich sonic diversity, bringing the people, place and spirit behind a global genre center stage.

Colombian reggaetonera Karol G floats between styles on this wistful Miami set with the breeziness of a pop star who knows no boundaries – or maybe it's the calculus of an artist who has built a career on subverting them. Her personal, unapologetic flourish has allowed her to top the Billboard charts of a genre with limited female participation, and even less superstardom.
Her signature bichota energy is subtle, yet pervasive in her stripped-down Tiny Desk (home) concert. Flanked by an illuminated all-women band, Karol G's authentic command of the intimate moment and its intended audience is unmistakable. She's stepping down from atop the glossy sets and sparkly stages to share secrets — lessons learned during her sudden ascent about humility, grace and empowerment — with the millions of niñitas who will watch this concert, enraptured by her effortless confidence and smooth Spanish bars.
Without a doubt, Karol G strikes a perfect balance here of vulnerability and star power, taking us on a journey through her many iterations. She deftly moves from a ballad-like rendition of urbano mash-up "Créeme/A Ella" to a soulful performance of trap corrido "200 COPAS" (her proclaimed favorite song at the moment) with Mexican Regional cariño Danny Felix. Closing with a first-ever live performance of the dreamy duet "CONTIGO VOY A MUERTE," she marks the end of the concert with a nod to her roots. Intertwined with fellow Colombiano Camilo, Karol G expresses gratitude and pride; she is the unguarded depiction of a superstar eternally enamorado with her fans and her country.
