Today’s feature is probably one of the best rappers turned behind the scenes figure in hip hop you never heard about. Or maybe you have because Red Cafe has been doing this for some time now, easily over 20 years in the game. But like a ghost, he was gone. He’s respected in multiple areas within the rap scene, but in his prime you could count on Cafe to come with the bars and the hits, not to mention throughout the 2000s and 2010s he kinda became known for some of the best mixtapes in the streets. Red Cafe was an artist always right on the cusp of transitioning into the mainstream but never quite got his foot in the right door resulting in over a lifetime in the game and only ever releasing 1 album. He transitioned into the background of music as a producer and Ghost writer since he was left behind by guys like French Montana and Fabolous. THE GHOST: Was Red Cafe Left behind? This film features wonderful concert footage, backstage antics, interviews with Craig Bartholomew Strydom and Stephen "Sugar" Segerman, Rodriguez and his family, the promoters, the fans and the musicians.

All live footage was filmed at the concerts in Pretoria, Durban and the Blues Room in Johannesburg.

The soundtrack for the documentary is based on the Live Fact CD with video collages from the various performances. The concert footage is linked with interviews, backstage antics, rehearsals, etc.

Everything in the culture of hip-hop has a trailblazer that made it possible. From Kool Herc’s inadvertent creation of the genre as a whole and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five injecting social commentary amid the pulsing beats on “The Message” through to Schooly D paving the way for NWA to take gangsta rap global with his groundbreaking “PSK”, nothing within this genre is born without the seeds being planted before them.

After leaving his job as a fish gutter in northern England, the unlikely soul genius went on to write such classics as 'Boogie Nights', 'Always and Forever', 'Give Me the night', ‘Stomp’, 'Yah Mo B There', 'Off the Wall', 'Rock With You', and ‘Thriller’.

Despite being considered one of the world’s greatest ever songwriters, the nerdy-looking multi-instrumentalist was known in the music industry as ‘The Invisible Man’ due to preferring to keep a low profile.

We recently sat down with Chicago artist ATM Reggie for an exclusive “Off The Porch” interview! Nina Burmi uses her smooth three-octave vocal range to explore the thumri style - a semi-classical genre intimately connected with dance, poetry, and drama.

Thumri is a sensuous ‘light classical’ style, originating in Uttar Pradesh. The word is derived from the Hindi ‘thumakna’, meaning ‘to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle’, and the genre remains closely connected with dance and drama. Ragas are treated more flexibly, and songs are often devotional, romantic, or even erotic in nature. Lyrics have a central role, often being based on folk tales or classical poetry, and commonly depicting the separation of lovers, or myths of Lord Krishna.

Nina Burmi sings in the Kirana gharana style, tackling khayal, thumri, bhajan, and other forms. Currently living in the UK, she trained under the esteemed husband-wife pairing of Dilshad Khan and Parveen Sultana, and combines the latter’s wide vocal range with a more sparsely ornamented approach. In this song she is joined by top accompanists, with lyrics describing the tension and sorrow of a lover who is separated from Lord Krishna.
