Stormzy & Rick Rubin i-N Conversation Hotney 1 Streams • 4 years ago

@Stormzy's new album, This Is What I Mean, was three years and a pandemic in the making. We sat down with Stormzy and the founder of the original Def Jam label, Rick Rubin, to listen to the album in full.

00:00 - Intro
05:54 - Fire + Water
07:43 - Fire + Water
09:00 - Fire + Water
10:27 - This Is What I Mean
14:02 - Fire Babe
16:42 - Please
18:12 - Sampha’s Plea
19:16 - Need You
20:11 - Hide & Seek
21:43 - My Presidents Are Black
23:59 - Holy Spirit
25:51 - Bad Blood
26:25 - I Got My Smile Back
27:30 - Give it to The Water

They first spoke the day before the start of the recording sessions for the album — where Rick offered him advice — but here they meet for the first time to discuss the artistic process Stormzy went through putting the album together. Over an afternoon spent listening to the album and talking, they discuss everything from defying the audience's expectations of you, being creatively selfish in the best possible way, and growing, both as a man and as a musician.

The album Stormzy made is full of honesty, rawness and emotion. It’s an album about God and love, about coming to terms with the end of a famous and well-publicised relationship; about working through those feelings, examining your faults, looking deep inside yourself, and working out who you want to be as a man. As Stormzy says: “It's not about defying what everyone thinks about you; it’s about being totally true to yourself.”A global platform for emerging talent, i-D celebrates fashion, culture, individuality and youth.

SiR: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 1 Streams • 4 years ago

Watch SiR play "The Recipe", "New Sky" and "Wires In The Way" and "John Redcorn" at the Tiny Desk.

Did you know you can watch Tiny Desk Concerts on npr.org ONE WEEK before they go up on YouTube? Click here: https://www.npr.org/tinydesk

SiR, the R&B singer from Inglewood, CA, seemed lost in thought as he stood behind the Tiny Desk. While his bandmates curiously bounced around the desk, joking and even searching for Bob Boilen, SiR remained particularly focused. About halfway through the performance, he eventually revealed what had been weighing on his heart. He told the NPR crowd he'd lost his infant godson a few days prior and dedicated the performance to him. "We're doing this for him. It took a lot for me to be here today ...but we're gonna get through this."

Since signing to hip-hop juggernaut Top Dawg Entertainment in 2017, Sir Darryl Farris been the most consistent, most reliable player on the roster outside of its original four (Jay Rock, Kendrick, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul.) His output has further solidified the label's stake in spaces outside of just rap music.

For his Tiny Desk concert, SiR treated the office to some of the best that his latest LP, Chasing Summer has to offer. Themes of regret loom throughout the album and he's never shied away from writing about personal flaws. His depiction of misdirected desires and heartbreak on "John Redcorn" and "The Recipe" reveal a cruel honesty that couples grapple with at times. The set was also a family affair with his mother and older brother offering support as two of the three background vocalists. We get a glimpse of his upbringing in the gospel choir once those harmonies open up.

The Pat Metheny Interview Hotney 1 Streams • 4 years ago

This interview was 5 years in the making. Pat is my favorite guitarist and biggest influence. The interview is 1:46 hours packed full of incredible stories and insights I never knew about Pat. He even played guitar which is something I have never seen him do in an interview setting. PAT METHENY was born in Kansas City on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility - a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional "jazz guitar" sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument. METHENY'S versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny's body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.

On September 10th, 2021 Modern Recordings will release PAT METHENY SIDE-EYE - NYC, an exciting, vibrant and energized new platform for Metheny, showcased in a recording that features 30 minutes of intricate new music set alongside a few unexpected and creative re-workings of Metheny classics re-imagined.
So, what is Side-Eye?
Pat explains, “I wanted to create an ongoing platform to host a rotating cast of the newer generations of musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way. From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians hiring me, which gave me a chance to develop through the prism of their experiences and the particular demands of what their music implied.”
