The Bob Dylan Phenomenon | Music Documentary | Peter Doggett | Malcolm Dome | Mick Gold Hotney 11 Streams • 2 years ago

Nobel Prize Winner, Pulitzer Prize Winner, and Oscar Winner are a few of the top accomplishments of Bob Dylan. This stunning retrospective features a comprehensive and detailed study of the most talented songwriter of the 20th century. Join a leading team of critics as they explore the legacy of Dylan. The film features highlights of Dylan performing live: Highway 61 Revisited, Fixin' To Die, Man of Constant Sorrow, When The Ship Comes In, Only A Pawn In Their Game, Blowin' In The Wind, Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall, The Times They Are A Changing, Mr. Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Tangled Up In Blue and many more!

Bob Dylan (legally Robert Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer and songwriter. Often regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture during a career spanning more than 60 years. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" (1963) and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" (1964) became anthems for the civil rights and antiwar movements. His lyrics during this period incorporated a range of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences, defying pop music conventions and appealing to the burgeoning counterculture.

Dylan was born and raised in St. Louis County, Minnesota. Following his self-titled debut album in 1962, which comprised mainly traditional folk songs, he made his breakthrough as a songwriter with the release of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan the following year. The album features "Blowin' in the Wind" and the thematically complex "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall". Many of his songs adapted the tunes and phraseology of older folk songs. He went on to release the politically charged The Times They Are a-Changin' and the more lyrically abstract and introspective Another Side of Bob Dylan in 1964. In 1965 and 1966, Dylan drew controversy among folk purists when he adopted electrically amplified rock instrumentation, and in the space of 15 months recorded three of the most important and influential rock albums of the 1960s: Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited (both 1965) and Blonde on Blonde (1966). His six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" (1965) expanded commercial and creative boundaries in popular music.

In July 1966, a motorcycle accident led to Dylan's withdrawal from touring. During this period, he recorded a large body of songs with members of the Band, who had previously backed him on tour. These recordings were released as the collaborative album The Basement Tapes in 1975. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Dylan explored country music and rural themes in John Wesley Harding (1967), Nashville Skyline (1969), and New Morning (1970). In 1975, he released Blood on the Tracks, which many saw as a return to form. In the late 1970s, he became a born-again Christian and released a series of albums of contemporary gospel music before returning to his more familiar rock-based idiom in the early 1980s. Dylan's 1997 album Time Out of Mind marked the beginning of a renaissance for his career. He has released five critically acclaimed albums of original material since then, the most recent being Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020). He also recorded a series of three albums in the 2010s comprising versions of traditional American standards, especially songs recorded by Frank Sinatra. Dylan has toured continuously since the late 1980s on what has become known as the Never Ending Tour.

Since 1994, Dylan has published nine books of paintings and drawings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. He has sold more than 145 million records,[11] making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. He has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, ten Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Pulitzer Prize Board in 2008 awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power". In 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

Before Limp Bizkit: How Nu Metal Became Pop - Revisited Hotney 11 Streams • 2 years ago

For a brief moment in the late 90s and early 2000s, Nu Metal ruled the airwaves. With releases such as KoRn's Follow the Leader, Limp Bizkit's Significant Other and Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory, the genre had commercial clout, but critically fared less well. However if you were a teenager at the time, nothing else felt like its white-knuckled throat-shredding catharsis. Not only that but the genre fused together many different sonic elements that previously seemed incompatible. But how did we get here? What were the vital steps along the way? And was it really all for the nookie? This is How Nu Metal Became Pop.

Milton Nascimento & esperanza spalding: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 11 Streams • 2 years ago

Suraya Mohamed | August 7, 2024
We almost never post Tiny Desk (home) concerts anymore. But to have the glorious Brazilian musical icon Milton Nascimento with his gifted friend and collaborator, esperanza spalding, be an exception is perhaps the opportunity of a lifetime. Nascimento is 81 years old now and has difficulty traveling out of Brazil.

It’s hard to explain the gravity of Nascimento’s career and his significant influence on all genres of music. Performing for more than 60 years, the singer, musician and songwriter’s discography includes more than 40 albums. In his prime, his rich voice spanned many octaves. While his vocal quality might not be as strong now, there is an intangible essence that fills the void. “What’s so amazing is the quantum resonance of this elder’s life and you can’t make that sound,” spalding told WRTI’s Nate Chinen last month. “It’s not a sound, it’s a lived thing that does travel on the frequencies, obviously, but we don’t even have the words to describe what we’re actually picking up.”

In 2022, Nascimento was on his farewell tour, but in 2023 he put his retirement on hold after deciding to collaborate with spalding on their upcoming album, Milton + esperanza. Songs from that record are featured in this magical (home) concert. Recorded last month in Nascimento’s living room in Rio de Janeiro, it’s likely to be the only video performance of this music.

The songs here are gentle, lush and filled with passion. The beautiful harmonies and syncopated rhythms combine with spalding’s acrobatic bass lines to give the music a playful, dance-like feel. But what really stands out in this performance is the deep friendship, admiration and love Nascimento and spalding hold for one another.

The band comments about the track and video:
“Catchy – groovy – thrilling! Today we present you our rebellious anthem and second single "We Owe No One". Embedded in an intense sound and filled with anthemic melodies that will burn themselves into your brain, the song creates a gripping sense of unity that can be transferred to our entire metal community. The track goes straight to the front and in the video we have given free rein to our creativity together with the camera team. Put the song on continuous rotation, watch the video and don't forget: We Owe No One!“

Lyrics:
We Owe No One

Head‘s spinning
Choking on every breath
I want out, wanna run but fall
Oh, I‘m so done with it all

Sore knuckles meet cement
Broken shadows
Torn and bent
The situation‘s out of hand
Am I trying too hard
To make sense of the senseless?

We owe no one
Forged in the flames of conformity
Let‘s become
Our transformation has begun

We owe no one
Knots and ties have come undone
Come on strong
As we fall towards the sun

Now take a look
And tell me what you see
Naiveté rules over chaos
So fragile, so strong, oh I want it all
One promise and a chance to fail
Tight skin
Worn and pale
I‘ll take a breath before I leave
Set out for the new, the unseen, never been

Don‘t hold on, let go
This is where the journey starts
Every footprint, step by step
Until you‘re on the other side

We owe no one
Forged in the flames of conformity
Let‘s become
Our transformation has begun

We owe no one
Knots and ties have come undone
Come on strong
As we fall towards the sun

We only see what has been done
Our transformation has begun
We owe no one
We owe no one

We owe no one
Forged in the flames of conformity
Let‘s become
Our transformation has begun

We owe no one
Knots and ties have come undone
Come on strong
As we fall towards the sun
Towards the sun, towards the sun
We fall, we fall
Towards the sun
