Snarky Puppy: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 10 Streams • 4 years ago

Watch Snarky Puppy play "Tarova" and "Xavi" at the Tiny Desk.

Nov. 20, 2019 | Colin Marshall -- Seconds before we hit record, Snarky Puppy's bandleader, Michael League leaned in to ask if he could "do a little crowd work." I suspect he waited until the last second on purpose, but it's been easy to trust this band when they have an idea, judging by the three Grammy Awards they get to dust off at home after every tour run.

What resulted was a Tiny Desk first: League divided the audience into two sections, one side clapping out a 3/4 beat and the other half a 4/4 beat, creating a polyrhythm that I'm sure a handful of coworkers didn't feel so confident trying to pull off. But this band pulls you in with simple instruction and a little faith.

Snarky Puppy has been a force for a while now, earning the ears of millions for more than a decade. And their secret sauce? A long-simmered recipe of jazz, funk and gospel. The band started as college friends in the jazz program at the University of North Texas back in 2003. But the formative era came a few years later, after League became a part of the gospel scene in Dallas and eventually brought the jazz students to church, where music plays a different role than it does in the classroom. In the pulpit, it's a channel for spiritual healing, a communal experience between players and congregation. As an experiment, League pulled his jazz friends and his gospel bandmates into one ensemble, where the two groups bonded together and established ground-zero for building the sonic identity of Snarky Puppy.

Thirteen albums later, you can still hear these gospel and jazz orbits crashing into each other. They're masters of theme and variation, offering anyone with a listening ear a place to grab hold. And people do. They're a band whose lyric-less melodies are still yelled (sung back) to them at their concerts around the world, as a shared catharsis for everyone in the room.

ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE // LYRICS

I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning
With one foot in the grave

They say what doesn't kill you
Leaves you haunted, mislead
You're still damned and you're crucified
You chose to burn instead

Burn
I gather all this timber
Burn
Pile it to the sky
Burn
Set it all ablaze
What's dead can never die

I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning at the stake
But these flames will keep me sane
I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning with one foot in the grave

All the stars have fallen
From their place in the night
Rise from embers and ashes
We will rebuild the sky

Burn
All these memories
Burn
Broken lines in time
Burn
Set them all ablaze
What's dead can never die

Back from the dead but I'm barely alive

I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning at the stake
But these flames will keep me sane
I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning with one foot in the grave

These flames will keep me sane

I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning
With one foot in the grave

I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning at the stake
But these flames will keep me sane
I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning with one foot in the grave

I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning at the stake
But these flames will keep me sane
I am one foot in the grave
This heaven's living hell
It's like I'm burning
With one foot in the grave

“I Ain’t Worried” Lyrics:
i don’t know what you’ve been told
but time is running out no need to take it slow
im stepping to you toe to toe
i should be scared honey maybe so

but i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
swimmin in the floods, dancing on the clouds, below

i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it

I don’t know what you’ve been told
but time is running out so spend it like its gold
im living like I’m 9 zeros
got no regrets even when I’m broke
yeah
im at my best when i got something
im wanting to steal
way too busy for them problems
and problems to feel (yeah yeah)
no stressing just obsessin with sealin the deal
ill take it in and let it go

but i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
swimmin in the floods, dancing on the clouds, below

i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it

oooooooooo
i aint worried
oooooooo
oh no no

i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
keeping dreams alive, 1999, heroes
i aint worried bout it right now (right now)
swimmin in the floods, dancing on the clouds, below
i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it
i aint worried bout it

Waxahatchee: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 10 Streams • 2 years ago

Elle Mannion | December 16, 2024
The last time Waxahatchee performed at the Tiny Desk, things looked — and sounded — a bit different. In 2013, Katie Crutchfield, sporting baby bangs, performed her bare-boned, devastating songs alone with her eyes mostly closed. "I rolled out of the tour band … I sort of didn't really know what I was doing at all. My amp broke in the middle [of the set]," Crutchfield says of her 2013 performance.

And while she was already earning her place as one of the most profound lyricists of the 21st century, much has changed since then for the now Grammy-nominated artist. Across Crutchfield's six albums as Waxahatchee, plus country duo Plains, she's strayed from her DIY punk roots and settled into something more akin to Americana.

In this Tiny Desk concert, Crutchfield is cool and cozy behind the Desk; she sways with an easy smile as she kicks off the set with her latest single, "Much Ado About Nothing," alongside a five-piece band. She performs one of NPR Music's best songs of 2024, "Right Back To It," as well as Tigers Blood's title track and an album standout, "Crowbar." She and the band end with "Fire," a song that, as the first single from 2020's Saint Cloud, marked the beginning of a beautiful transformation of Waxahatchee's music.

"I'm really happy that that exists," Crutchfield says of her 2013 Tiny Desk. "And I'm really happy to be back to show you this new version of the band."

Letra:

¿Dónde? ¿Dónde estás?
Llevo rato llamando
Contesta
No corren las manecillas del reloj
Me tienes en el aire volando
Pero lejos del cielo
Aunque perderte da miedo
En verdad, mejor dime que no

¿Dónde? ¿Dónde estás?
Llevo rato llamando
Contesta

Mala, tu fuiste mala
Tu fuiste mala
No seas mala
Deja que te lo haga
Por última vez en mi cama

¿Dónde? ¿Dónde estás?
Llevo rato llamando
Contesta
No corren las manecillas del reloj
Me tienes en el aire volando
Pero lejos del cielo
Aunque perderte da miedo
En verdad, mejor dime que no

Como cuando no se riegan las flores
Baby, estoy triste
Estoy triste

Llevo rato llamando
Contesta
No corren las manecillas del reloj
Me tienes en el aire volando
Pero lejos del cielo
Aunque perderte da miedo
En verdad, mejor dime que no

¿Dónde estás?
Mejor dime que no
Contesta
Yeah
Ra’ Rauw
Rauw Alejandro
(Me tienes en el aire volando)
Saturno
(Mejor dime que no)
(Esta noche me la paso perriando)

Annalisa - Bellissima

Insieme solo dentro casa

Ho fatto i salti mortali
No non mi dire che è tardi
Avevo voglia di
Vo-voglia di
Voglia di

Dove vai
Te ne vai
Quella volta non dovevi andare via
Ero bellissima
Bellissima
Dove vai
Ma che cosa vuoi
Quella volta ti aspettavo in Saint Laurent
Ero bellissima
Bellissima

E poi volevo dirti
Che non ci dormo più
Madonna se mi manchi
Si
Chiamatemi un medico
E poi senza avvisare sei qui

Oddio però tu mi piaci
Ho fatto i salti mortali
No non mi dire che è tardi
Avevo voglia di
Vo-voglia di
Voglia di

Dove vai
Te ne vai
Quella volta non dovevi andare via
Ero bellissima
Bellissima
Dove vai
Ma che cosa vuoi
Quella volta ti aspettavo in Saint Laurent
Ero bellissima
Bellissima

Baby
No me llames
Que yo estoy ocupá’
Olvidando tus males

Piña colada, no tengo pena

A B C, 1 2 3

A B C, 1 2 3
