Country Singer Called Out For Racist History After CMT Pulls Controversial Video Hotney 7 Streams • 3 years ago

Country Music Television (CMT) is no longer airing Jason Aldean's music video "Try That In A Small Town." The song's lyrics have racial overtones, gun violence, and lynching sentiments. Also, the video was shot at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, where a Black man named Henry Choate, 18, was lynched in 1927. In addition, the site is also infamous for the Columbia Race Riot that occurred in 1946. Dr. Rashad Richey and Francesca Fiorentini discuss on Indisputable.

Country Music Television is no longer airing Jason Aldean's music video "Try That In A Small Town," which sparked criticism after its release Friday.

The TV network pulled the video from rotation, a CMT spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY in an email Wednesday.

The network stopped showing the music video after Aldean, who survived a mass shooting while he performed in 2017, faced backlash for the song, which many perceived as being in favor of gun violence and lynching.

Not long after the video's release, online critics highlighted the song lyrics as emblematic of songs heightening gun violence and lynching sentiments upon many in his rural, small-town fan base.

"Cuss out a cop, spit in his face / Stomp on the flag and light it up / Yeah, ya think you're tough / Well, try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road / Around here, we take care of our own / You cross that line, it won't take long / For you to find out, I recommend you don't / Try that in a small town,” Aldean sings.

Viewers also noted that scenes in the video were shot at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, where a Black man named Henry Choate, 18, was lynched in 1927. The site is also where the infamous Columbia Race Riot occurred in 1946.

LETRA/LYRICS:

Yo compro mis cosas, tú no me controlas
De estar contigo yo mejor me quedo sola

(Escucha)
Yo no te lavo los trastes
Tampoco plancho tu ropa

(Becky G, yeah-yeah)
(Maluma baby)

Tampoco plancho tu ropa

Yeah-yeah

Que no, que no, que no, y no
La respuesta a tu pregunta es no
Que no, que no, que no, y no

Siempre insisto pero dice no
Que no, que no, que no, que no
Yeah-yeah, eh, eh-eh-eh

LYRICS:
I got turned around in some little town
I’d never been to before
Working my way through a middle of June
Midnight thunderstorm
There was something in the headlights
That stopped me on a dime
Well she was scared to death
So I said climb in and in she climbed
Oh Yeah

Well she was bruised and broke from head to toe
With a tear in her blood stained shirt
She didn’t tell the whole truth
But she didn’t have to I knew what had happened to her
I didn’t load her down with questions
That girl had been through enough
I just threw it in drive
Looked in those eyes
And asked her where he was

I don’t know if he’s angel
Cause angels don’t do what he did
He was hell bent to find the man behind
All the whiskey scars I hid
I never thought my day of justice
Would come from a judge under his seat
But I knew right then I’d never get hit again when he said to me
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck

Well I knocked and knocked and no one came
So I kicked in his double wide door
I let the hammer drop before he got to that twelve he was reaching for
I didn’t try to hide my pistol
I didn’t even try to run
I just sat on the porch smoking one of his cigarettes
And waited for the cops to come

I don’t know if he’s angel
Cause angels don’t do what he did
He was hell bent to find the man behind
All the whiskey scars I hid
I never thought my day of justice
Would come from a judge under his seat
But I knew right then I’d never get hit again when he said to me
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck

Whoa
Have mercy on me Lord
Have mercy on me
Have mercy on me Lord

It’s been sixty months
And she still comes to to see me from time to time
It was worth the price to see a brighter side of the girl I picked up that night
And I might be here forever
It ain’t paradise that’s true
But it’s a whole hell of a lot better
Than the place I sent him to

Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Have mercy on me lord
Have mercy on me
Have mercy on me
Have mercy on me
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck
Wait in the truck
Just wait in the truck

━━

Blame Zeus is a portuguese heavy rock/ alternative metal band which began in december 2010. With influences that range from blues to metal, progressive and alternative rock, our music does not belong to only one style. Inspired by the old school of rock and metal, but focused on having a more modern sound, we intertwine rich melodies with melancholic lyrics, creating intimate surroundings with a strong rock sound, and combining heavy guitars with the raw tone of a raspy female voice.

LEFT FOR DEAD is about finding the strength and will to live, even after the world has wronged you and you feel like it's impossible to hold on to this life. It's about taking those negative feelings and turning them into the fuel to make good things happen and, above all, to forgive.

LYRICS:

If it's not my time

Why does it hurt?

If this love's impure

Why do I want it more?

If the sun is out

Why's it dark all around?

No amount of words

Will erase the shit I found

How can I forgive and forget

When you show not an ounce of regret?

Wide open

wounded

wreckage

stranded

left for dead, left for dead

If the rules are clear

Why am I here?

If you broke our bonds

Why do I keep you near?

Every promise lost

Every table turned

Trust is fully gone

As my whole life unfurls
