Студия Unity Films представляет документальный фильм про нижегородскую группу The Soul Surfers и лондонского мультиинструменталиста Шона Ли.

The Soul Surfers, квартет музыкантов из Поволжья, впервые собрался для выступления в школе на последнем звонке, а сейчас у них десятки сыгранных концертов и более 20 пластинок, выпущенных в США. Одна из них попала к знаменитому мультиинструменталисту и гуру соул-музыки Шону Ли, решившему, что он нашел какой-то затерянный шедевр советского фанка. Сложно было поверить, что музыку такого уровня делают ребята, которым нет и тридцати.

Нетрудно понять, почему Шон, который издается на том же калифорнийском лейбле, что и The Soul Surfers, согласился на предложение выступить вместе на Пикнике «Афиши», а также сочинить и записать совместный трек. Их встреча в Москве в аналоговой студии на территории бывшего завода стала полноценным музыкальным путешествием, во время которого родилась магия звука. Let It Soul — это воодушевляющая история о том, как музыка стирает границы между государствами и отменяет расстояния.

LET IT SOUL is a documentary by Unity Films that tells the story of a new hit being born from blood, sweat and tears and proves that music erases all the existing barriers between countries, cultures and distances. Nizhniy Novgorod, London, Moscow, Los Angeles are all cities that are united in the story of a song. From the first random musical notes to the last vinyl tracks, LET IT SOUL reveals the true story of one ambitious idea turning into musical hit. Includes appearance of soul and funk legends such a Adrian Younge and Malcolm Catto.
As a composer, Shawn Lee is without a doubt one of the great masters of today with The Soul Surfers being the premier band coming out of Russia with the heavy funk aesthetics that will give you the chills.The documentary takes you inside the studio with a firsthand look into the recording process which is a perfect reflection of the sound that most of us get when we drop the needle down on any of their releases. In 2021, the Tiny Desk x globalFEST series was created to promote international music discovery. For the last three years, artists from around the globe have performed Tiny Desk (home) concerts from their respective countries, but for the first time this year, artists performed at the Tiny Desk at NPR's headquarters.

The first impression I get from watching the Spanish duo Tarta Relena at the Tiny Desk is a reminder that the human voice may be mankind's oldest musical instrument.

Even more so when you consider that the five languages they sing here includes not just Spanish, Greek and their native Catalan, but also Latin and classical Greek, evoking images of lyricists and vocalists from centuries past.

Starting initially as an a capella project in 2016, vocalists Helena Ros and Marta Torella eventually added ambient-styled electronics to cushion their uncommonly matched voices. The duo's first number, "Me Yelassan," is in Greek, so be sure to activate the translation option on the video to fully appreciate the power of the performance with lyrics read almost like a Zen koan meditation on rebirth and eternity.

Stay tuned in to those translations, because the magic of this performance is in losing yourself in the harmonies and timeless poetic lyrics. In fact, the lyrics of the song "Safo" are taken from a poem written by the ancient Greek poet Sappho, and includes the prophetic line: "Someone will remember us, I say even in another time." How often do we get a chance to consider our place in history set to such stunning vocals?
