Alien Ant Farm exploded into the mainstream in the summer of 2001 thanks to a song they never meant to rely on: their cover of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal. The track became inescapable on radio and MTV, but it came with unintended consequences. The band spent years wrestling with being known primarily for a joke cover that was never meant to be a single, even briefly refusing to play it live. Behind that song sat Anthology, a diverse, ambitious record whose history reveals how four misfit musicians from Riverside clawed their way into the nu‑metal era without ever really fitting in.
