Whenever i listen to terrestrial radio where I live few Canadian few bands seem to get as much play as Our Lady Peace. The only band I feel like I hear more is The Tragically Hip.Today, let’s talk about the how the band got so popular - thanks in large part to their first two records.

I was in grade 6 living in a small town Alberta. A place called Edson - halfway between Edmonton and Jasper. I spent most of my youth there. That year we got a Tim Hortons, well it wasn’t just any tim hortons it was a tim hortons and wendy’s, we got on the map that year. One day a girl came in my class and said her Mom who was working at the tim hortons served the members at Our Lady Peace who came through town on their tour bus. This was when they were touring on their massive record Clumsy - Superman’s dead was inescapable. Well the kids in our class were super impressed.

Our Lady Peace was born out of a chance meeting between guitarist Mike Turner and vocalist Raine Maida in 1992. Turner is seven years senior to Maida. Thanks to a now weekly toronto entertainment magazine called Now.. Turner posted an ad looking for a singer.. Maida responded to that ad. They soon met and found they had a shared musical vision.

Turner spent his teenage years in England before moving to Canada to do schooling at the university of western ontario where got an english degree.. He hlightlighted.Sex Pistols as one of his biggest influences Before forming out lady peace Turner worked in a machine shop and originally planned on doing biochemistry and genetics in university but he credited ayn rand’s book fountainhead as convincing him to really pursue his dreams of music.

Maida for his part studied criminology at the University of Toronto.Maida was influenced by stevie wonder, joy division, u2,, radiohead, blur, otis redding, tori amos, Maida told muchmusic his favourite vocalists were women - loving the passion a women could sing with. In fact a lot of press coverage focused on maida’s falsetto.

The duo quickly realized their shared musical vision and began recruiting other members to complete the lineup with their original rhythm section dropping out. Apparently Maida and Turner felt like they were more committed than their original bassist and drummer. They put another ad in the magazine and were soon joined by bassist Chris Eacrett and drummer Jeremy Taggart, solidifying the band's early lineup. Taggart, the youngest of the group was only 18 at the time finishing high school by correspondance with turner remarking to the drumme when they first met “jeez, does your mother know your here.” but once they started jamming that awkwardness was gone.

I do want to say that entertainment magazine Now wasn’t very kind to our lady peace when they got big with guitarist mike turner recalling “they’re the only magazine in the country that pretty much that gave us less than favourable reviews.”

”The name "Our Lady Peace" was inspired by a 1943 poem by Mark Van Doren, reflecting the band's deep, philosophical approach to music with Maeda telling the morning call “the poem is pretty dark, very interpretive. But it’s not about being heavy handed at all, but being open to suggestion.””

In their formative years, OLP was labed as being post-grunge or alternative rock drawing frequent comparisons to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden in addition to led zeppelin. I do want to point out that in a lot of interviews for the band’s first two albums the band almost put down these groups citing their dark outlook in their lyrics without offering much in the way of hope. The band’s lyrics were frequently labeld as being darkly optimistic.

Our Lady Peace managed to carve out a unique niche for themselves, thanks in large part to Maida's distinctive vocals and the band's penchant for introspective lyrics. Maida described the band’s sound as a melting pot and added that the fact the members didn’t know each other super well led to a lot more spontaneity in their music. The group band opted to not focus on live shows initially, choosing to writeinstead. .Maida and Turner attended a music industry seminar in Toronto where each of them shelled out about $135. Throughout the 90’s Megadeth inched further and further away from it’s trash metal roots with each subsequent release. None was a bigger shock to longtime fans than 1999’s Risk, which as the name suggested was a huge gamble for the band. In today’s video, let’s talk about the album, the fan reaction and how it also proved to be a sonic farewell to one of the band’s most beloved members.

Megadeth was formed in 1983 by guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine after he was famously fired from Metallica. Fueled by a desire to outdo his former bandmates, Mustaine teamed up with bassist David Ellefson, and together they set out to create some of the most intense and technically proficient thrash metal the world had ever heard."

"Their debut album, 'Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!' was released in 1985 and quickly established Megadeth as a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene. Subsequent albums like 'Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?' and 'Rust in Peace' cemented their status as thrash metal legends." Dave remarked about his mission with his new band

"After getting fired from Metallica, all I remember is that I wanted blood. Theirs. I wanted to be faster and heavier than them."

"As the 1990s progressed, Megadeth began to experiment with their sound. Albums like 'Countdown to Extinction' and 'Youthanasia' and Cyrptic Writings saw the band incorporating more melody and mainstream appeal into their music. This shift in direction helped them achieve greater commercial success and reach a broader audience." I will say, despite all the changing musical trends in the 80’s and 90’s, megadeth seemed to come out largely unscathed. At the height of grunge, countdown to extinction proved to be there most successful record, peaking at number 2. It’s follow up youthensia went platinum and cryptic writings got close to that mark. Even bassist David Ellefson acknowledged “i think we were a band that never really got behind the trends.’

In fact, Cryptic Writings was the most embraced album by radio to date thanks to songs like Trust - love that drum intro, which topped the rock charts and three other songs from the record made it into the top twenty. Trust even earned the band a grammy nomination. For that album, band also teamed up with Chaos Comics to produce a comic book series that was called the cryptic writings of Megadeth -which adapted lyrics from the album into the comics. IT was a weird time if you were a megadeth fan because there mixed messages in terms of what to expect on their next album.

While touring after Cryptic Writings, Mustaine told interviewers that Cryptic writings songs like like "She-Wolf" and "Vortex" had reinvigorated his love of Iron Maiden and Motörhead. He signalledi n those interviews he wanted to take megadeth’s next album in a heavier direction - claiming the next album would be ½ peace sells and ½ cryptic writings.

But as the promo cycle for their follow up to Cryptic Writings started ramping up, It became apparent that their follow up album was about writing songs that were going to appeal to the masses. The VP of marketing at capitol records rob gordan remarked to billboard before Risk’s release “before the last record, we’d maybe had one track at rock radio and it would be over. With this record (Risk) like the last one I think we’ll have four plus again.” Even in the making of risk video on megadeth’s youtube channel the band admitted to listening to a lot of 70’s disco and fleetwood mac for inspiration. Couple this with the fact that by the late 90’s the musical landscape was changing, and Megadeth faced pressure to adapt to the evolving tastes of rock and metal fans."

"In 1999, Megadeth released their eighth studio album, 'Risk.' The album marked a significant departure, embracing an even more radio-friendly, hard rock sound while also featuring elements of electronica. . The title 'Risk' was a nod to the band's willingness to take a gamble with their musical direction."

"Interestingly, the idea to take more chances with their songwriting came from several unexpected places. Mustaine revealed in an interview with uDiscover Music, it was actually Metallica's Lars Ulrich who suggested the approach.

The LA Times perfectly summarized the band’s outlook on music saying they are and i quote “more likely to chase ideals than the trappings of fame. Hailing from Santa Barbara the band had a pretty drama free family life unlike their contemporaries. They came from white collar backgrounds and the members attended Saint Marco’s high school meeting in drama class before forming in 1986, Their lineup was made of up singer/rhythm guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols bassist, Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss . Another alumni of their high school was model kathy ireland. I’ve done a whol video on how punk rocker Henry Rollins was so irritated by kathy ireland got himself banned from the tonight show. The quartet’s name would be influenced by a Monty Python Skit. named "Rock Notes" from their Contractual Obligation Album. The skit would see a newscaster reading news about fictional band names. One of the band names was Toad the Wet Sprocket and by the band’s own admission the name was supposed to be temporary and while the members didn’t seem too crazy about the name, it endured during their entire career.
Eric Idle, who performed the sketch, reflected on the band’s name saying "I once wrote a sketch about rock musicians, and I was trying to think of a name that would be so silly nobody would ever use it, or dream it could ever be used. So I wrote the words 'Toad the Wet Sprocket.' And a few years later, I was driving along the freeway in LA, and a song came on the radio, and the DJ said, 'that was by Toad the Wet Sprocket,' and I nearly drove off the freeway." The band even made rolling stone magazine’s list of worst band names.
Toad the Wet Sprockets influences would include REM, U2 and the Waterboys. They were sometimes labeled a thinking man’s band similar to other 90’s rockers like Live, which I’ve done a pretty extensive video on. The link is down below.
Toad the Wet Sprocket’s first gig would take place in September of 1986 at an open mic talent contest at a local restaurant, which they lost. But that loss would spur the band to improve and play more gigs. By the time the band started gigging around Santa Barbara a lot of other bands were paid in beer but since quartet were below the legal drinking age, according to an interview they did wit hVH1 they were paid in free peanuts and sometimes an occasional frozen burrito.
Much of Toad’s early success was due to friend Brad Nack, Guitarist Todd Nichols would tell the LA Times
“He used to be in a band called The Tan,”“and he came to see us one night He liked us and introduced us to a friend of his, Chris Blake, who was looking for a band to manage. They helped us record the demos that became our first release, ‘Bread & Circus.’ We did the whole thing for $650 at the end of last summer.” Their self produced record was put out on their own label Abe’s Records, but it wasn’t until they began work on their second album Pale that a bidding war between labels happened. MCA was so enthralled with the band they offered them a 1 million advance. The members knew that 1 million was a loan and it would have to be paid back in record sales. They knew they were unproven and likely weren’t going to be able to recoup the advance. Instead they wanted to work their way up gradually and signed a four album deal with Columbia Records. Columbia would re-release Bread and Circus at the band’s request to have no alterations or remixing done on the record.. The band in the meantime finished their second record Pale, which was done on a shoe string budget of about $6,000. Pale would also result in the single Come Back Down which peaked at number 27 on the rock charts in america and the band shot a music video for it which got some airplay on MTV’s show 120 minutes. The minor success with the single wouldn’t result in the labum becoming a hue seller.
