Nada Surf's journey through the tumultuous waters of the music industry is a testament to resilience and artistic evolution. Initially touted to follow in the footsteps of alternative rock giants like Weezer, the band catapulted to fame with their breakout hit "Popular," which drew comparisons to Weezer due to its success and shared producer with the Blue Album. However, despite the initial hype surrounding "Popular," Nada Surf faced challenges as they struggled to replicate its success and were eventually labeled as one-hit wonders.

The band's history is intertwined with the personal experiences of frontman Matthew Caws, whose upbringing in a family marked by academic pursuits and cultural diversity shaped his musical journey. Raised in various locales including Paris and influenced by his older sister's extensive record collection, Caws eventually found his way back to New York City in the early '80s, where he formed early musical endeavors with future Nada Surf bassist Daniel Lorca.

The band's trajectory took a turn with the formation of Nada Surf in 1992, marked by a determination to confront personal demons and navigate the complexities of depression and self-doubt. Despite initial setbacks, including a drummer's departure, Nada Surf persevered, recruiting drummer Ira Elliott and forging ahead with their musical aspirations.

Their debut album, "High/Low" (1996), featuring the iconic track "Popular," thrust Nada Surf into the spotlight, albeit briefly, as they grappled with the pressures of sudden fame and expectations from both fans and the music industry. However, subsequent albums faced challenges, with the label pushing for another hit akin to "Popular," while the changing landscape of alternative rock posed additional hurdles.

Undeterred, Nada Surf embarked on a journey of self-discovery and artistic reinvention. With the release of their third album, "Let Go" (2003), the band found a new home at Barsuk Records and garnered critical acclaim for their mature and introspective sound. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Nada Surf, characterized by steady growth and a loyal fan base that appreciated the band's sincerity and authenticity.

Subsequent albums such as "The Weight is a Gift" (2005) and "Lucky" (2008) further solidified Nada Surf's reputation as a band capable of crafting thoughtful and evocative music. Collaborations with renowned artists like Dan Wilson of Semisonic showcased the band's willingness to explore new creative avenues while staying true to their artistic vision.

As the years progressed, Nada Surf continued to evolve, releasing albums like "You Know Who You Are" (2016) and "Never Not Together" (2020), which demonstrated a blend of introspection and social commentary. Their music found resonance in popular culture, with placements in films and television shows, reflecting the enduring relevance of their artistry.

Through ups and downs, Nada Surf's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative nature of music. From the heights of fame to the depths of uncertainty, the band's unwavering commitment to their craft has solidified their place in the pantheon of alternative rock, proving that sometimes, the greatest success lies in resilience and authenticity.

Lyrics
Meany, meany, meany, meany, meany (Say what?)
Meany, meany, meany, meany, meany (Say what?)
Meany, meany, meany, meany, meany, mean
Oh, you gotta do that again, Dove
Meany, meany, meany, meany, meany (Say what?)
Meany, meany, meany, meany, meany (Say what?)
Meany, meany, meany, meany, meany, mean (OK)

Hello, it's the Soul
Troopin' in wit the Jungle patrol
And this one's about the KO's, the knockouts out there
Who I call my buddy
Hold up (Wait a minute)

Now just wait
We're gonna talk about Buddy on this plate
But before we let the herd out the gate
Make sure the all the levels are straight out
(The Jungle, the Jungle, the Brothers, the Brothers)

De La Soul, on a roll
Black medallions, no gold
Hangin' out wit Pos, hangin' out wit Mase
Buddy buddy buddy all in my face

For the lap, Jimbrowski must wear a cap
Just in case the young girl likes to clap
Ain't for the wind but before I begin
I initiate the buddy with a slap

Now drop the beat, for the Phifer from A Tribe Called Quest
When I see Buddy, I will never half step
I just do her Tribal style and then jet
The Buddy that I like is to be sexy and nice
Just good enough for the one they call Phife
A brown skin Buddy with shoulder length hair
Nice firm breasts and a round derrierre

Now for the next, I'm the Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest
And if you quest for the Buddy, don't fess
If your jimmy wants nothing but the best (the best)
The best (Ooh Wee!)
Let's stick out the jimmy and see what we can catch
(Stick 'em up, stick 'em up jimmy)
Nets won't be needed unless
(Jenny wanna get right to the flesh)

Dancin' on the dance floor
Girl, it's you that I adore
Step off stage, you scream for more
Native Tongues got rhymes galore

Fly buddy (buddy) don't you know you make me go nutty (nutty)
I'm so glad that you're not a fuddy duddy (duddy)
Not too skinny and not too chubby (chubby)
Soft like silly putty
Miss Crabtree (Crabtree), I know that you're not mad at me (at me)
Cuz I told you that it was your buddy (buddy)
That was making me ever so horny (horny)
Junglelistically horny

I won't lie, I love B-U-D-D-Y
Cause I never let it walk on by
When it comes to me and Jenny, I seem (very serious)
Like a peek freen
Buddy is an act that occurs on the lift
When Jimmy and Jenny start shootin the gift
Boy let me get shot, I won't even riff

On the dial, my Buddy talks to me for a while
Plug Two is the {Q to her Tip}
On the A-side or sometimes the flip (word up)
Buddy, is the bud to my daisy tree (uh huh)
And the luden to my do-re-mi
And the pleaser to my man Plug Three
(Plug Three gets the whole caboodle)

Behind the bush, my Buddy likes the way that I push
And like a champ, just knock it on out
Never ever once sellin' out
(Well let loose the juice)
My Buddy helps me to (De La my Soul)
Keepin Jimmy in total control
Without Buddy, I'd be on a roll

Now as the lady
I thought that Jungle and Quest and Soul would just maybe
Give me the chance to say that I get crazy
Due to the fact I let Buddy amaze me
As a matter of fact, it crazes me in many ways
I decided that it was time for Monie Love to say
That when it comes to the B, you know that I don't play
'Cause to me, chasin' Buddy is the perfect way (perfect way)
To spend the day (to spend the day)

Oooh child, things are gettin a little easier
Oooh Buddy gets easier (yeah)
Oooh child, things are gettin a little easier
Oooh Buddy gets easier

Girl, I heard you're lookin' for some good times
If you Quest from the Soul, guess what we'll find
Whole lotta fun, lots of fun together
Just like kissin' cousins (Yeah, that's kinda clever)
Close like bosoms, bosoms stay close
If you be my Buddy, I will toast
That we're like Ethel Mertz and Lucille McGillicuddy
You can be mine and I can be your Buddy

The best Buddy's in evening wear
Long lovin' lets Tru know (he's in there)
I feel sorry for those who pay a fare (a fee?)
Word to the D
I don't beg, I just tease my Buddy with my right leg (ha-ha)
And then when it's ready what's said
Is Buddy is best in bed (Word to the D)

Buddy buddy told us all to get into a circle
Said don't bug because I won't hurt you
All I really wanna do is freak you
(You know what? She freaked us)

And I watched and then I checked my Swatch to see the time
The Tribe had formed a Buddy line
And that Buddy was mine, all mine

Now when Quest, Jungle and De La Soul
Is at the clubs, our ritual unfolds
Grab our bones and start swingin' our hands
(Then Jenny start flockin' in everywhere)
'Cause Jenifa just wants to stay aware
Yo fellas, should we keep her aware?
(Mmm, Hmm...yeah!!!)

Lyrics:
Time and again, we would return
For the unbelievers
Just like in Troy, we will destroy
Tear down the walls
Lesson learned, tide has turned
Time for ascension
Kill the pain, not in vain
We survived it all
So we

Stand United, ignite it
All for one and one for all's the way
Stand United, keep fighting
Or divided we shall fall one day

If instead of hate we all relate
approach one another
If we don't return, the fire will burn
There's a resolution
Lesson learned, tide has turned
Time for ascension
Break the chain, let us strain
Together we rise
So we

Stand United, ignite it
All for one and one for all's the way
Stand United, keep fighting
Or divided we shall fall one day

Stand, stand, stand
Stand United
All for one and one for all

Stand United, ignite it
All for one and one for all's the way
Stand United, keep fighting
Or divided we shall fall one day

Stand United, ignite it
All for one and one for all's the way
Stand United, Stand United
Stand United, keep fighting
Or divided we shall fall one day

"Live to Tell" is a song by American singer Madonna from her third studio album True Blue (1986). The song was originally composed by Patrick Leonard as an instrumental for the score of Paramount's film Fire with Fire, but Paramount rejected it. Leonard then presented the track to Madonna, who decided to use it for At Close Range, a film starring her then-husband Sean Penn. Madonna wrote the lyrics, co-composed the melodies and co-produced it with Leonard. "Live to Tell" was released as True Blue's lead single on March 26, 1986, by Sire Records; afterwards, it was included on Madonna's compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990), Something to Remember (1995), and Celebration (2009). A pop ballad, the song includes instrumentation from guitars, keyboards, drums and a synthesizer, while the lyrics deal with deceit, mistrust and childhood scars; Madonna also recalled in an interview that she thought about her relationship with her parents while writing the lyrics.

Upon release, the song was generally acclaimed by music critics, who frequently referred to it as one of her best ballads. It was also commercially successful, becoming Madonna's third number one in the US Billboard Hot 100, and her first number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. The music video, directed by James Foley, shows the singer in a more demure, toned down appearance, inspired by actresses such as Grace Kelly. "Live to Tell" was included on three of Madonna's concert tours. The performance at 2006's Confessions Tour caused controversy as it had the singer hanging from a mirrored cross simulating a crucifixion; religious groups condemned the number as an act of hostility toward the Roman Catholic Church. Madonna responded saying that her main intention with the performance was to bring attention to the millions of children dying in Africa. "Live to Tell" has been covered by a handful of artists, particularly for tribute albums.

Lyrics:

I have a tale to tell
Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well
I was not ready for the fall
Too blind to see the writing on the wall
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, 'til then
It will burn inside of me
I know where beauty lives
I've seen it once, I know the warm she gives
The light that you could never see
It shines inside, you can't take that from me
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, 'til then
It will burn inside of me
The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell
The secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again
If I ran away, I'd never have the strength
To go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart
Will it grow cold
The secret that I hide, will I grow old
How will they hear
When will they learn
How will they know
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, 'til then
It will burn inside of me
The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell
The secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, 'til then
It will burn inside of me
