Favorite Song
I’m on the stage right now
Singing your favorite song
Look in the crowd and you’re no where to be found as they sing along
I say,
You look good without no makeup
No lashes even better when you wake up
uh-uh-uh
I see the look on your face
I see ya hiding the hate
I see ya looking for someone to scoop you right off of your feet
You wanna ride in a Wraith
You wanna go out on dates
You want somebody to come bring you flowers
Someone to talk to for hours
Wash your back while y’all sit in the shower
Someone to tell you “you’re beautiful”
Someone to tell you and mean it
Someone to tell you I love you everyday
And don’t got a reason
You want someone to bring you peace
Someone to help you sleep
Someone to pick you up when you feeling down feeling lonely
Need somebody
Who can make it better
Somebody
Who can open up those gates
Open up those gates to your heart
Only if you’ll let me
I’m on the stage right now
Singing your favorite song
Look in the crowd and you’re no where to be found as they sing along
I say,
You look good without no makeup
No lashes even better when you wake up
uh-uh-uh
I see the look on you face
I see ya looking for peace
I see ya tired of the hurt
Tired of the pain
Tired of the nights where you can’t get no sleep
I see you’re tired thinking bout if he cheat
See you’re tired thinking bout if you leaving
See you’re tired of being so tired
And ya damn sure ain’t getting even
Need somebody
Who can make it better
Somebody
Who can open up those gates
Open up those gates to your heart
Only if you’ll let me
I’m on the stage right now
Singing your favorite song
Look in the crowd and you’re no where to be found as they sing along
I say,
You look good without no makeup
No lashes even better when you wake up

'Paranoid' is the second studio album from Black Sabbath. Released in September 1970, it was the band's only LP to top the UK Albums Chart until the release of the '13' album in 2013. Paranoid contains several of the band's signature songs, including "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track, which was the band's only Top 20 hit, reaching number 4 in the UK charts. It is often cited as the most influential album in the development of the entire heavy metal genre.

This year, NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts — both from home and from behind our beloved Desk. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Hearing Ravyn Lenae’s voice resonate from behind the Tiny Desk for one of our first concerts back in the building had me entranced. With her voice raw and unamplified, Lenae and her dynamic band transformed our office into a funky, futuristic space where she was completely in her element.
Hailing from Chicago, Lenae dropped her first EP, Moon Shoes, in 2015. Since then, she’s released two more EPs, her sound permeating the world of contemporary R&B and blurring the lines between soul, funk and R&B. This year Lenae reemerged with the release of her debut full length, HYPNOS, already shaping up to be one of the best albums of 2022.
Her Tiny Desk concert commences with three songs off HYPNOS. Opening with “Venom,” an electro-funk song that seethes, Lenae sings: “Why do you play me for a fool?” Her signature falsetto descends over spacey synth melodies while her drummer keeps an insistent, metallicy groove. Then Lenae performs perhaps the most vulnerable songs from her new album, including “Skin Tight,” a melancholic guitar-led ballad that addresses a past romantic relationship and the energy that was once shared, and “Inside Out,” a love letter to herself that channels a ’90s R&B sound with dramatic piano harmonies, a soulful lead melody and dynamic drums.
“I think it’s a lifelong journey, learning to love yourself and trust yourself, and believe in the skin you’re in,” Lenae says of “Inside Out.” “I wrote this song when I wasn’t so sure… that’s why we sing it together.” With a fiercely energetic upsweep, she closes the show with her hit “Sticky.” As she slides into those distinct shrilling oohs, I can’t help but sing along to her catchy hook — all while realizing that only Lenae can do it quite like that.

Today, right here, we get to peek into the decked-out living room of producer Adrian Sherwood's home and watch masters of reggae playfully chill. We hear Horace Andy's gruff tenor tell stories with 55 years of experience, rasp and wear.
"You've got to live, live, live for today, for tomorrow might never come your way," he pleads as he sings "Today Is Right Here," a track on his 2022 album Midnight Rocker. And then the lines I love best, "My mama told me when I was a child, said all the best things take a little while. But mama was wrong, wrong, wrong, the best things in life come and they go in the blink of an eye." All the while, a single snare drum and hi-hat keep the beat, and the band of bass, guitar, keyboard, sax, trumpet and cello warmly support the emotions pouring from Horace Andy.
Sitting on the right side of the screen is Adrian Sherwood, the hugely influential dub producer, banging out stuttered rhythms and textures. Adrian Sherwood produced Midnight Rocker, and six months later its younger, dubbed-out sibling, Midnight Scorchers. Seeing all these pioneers pouring out these chill vibes for this Tiny Desk (home) concert is a total thrill.

Oct. 21, 2019 | Rodney Carmichael -- Seconds before the cameras started to roll, Summer Walker showed just how much she was willing to sacrifice for her day at the Tiny Desk: She clipped her nails. It wasn't an aesthetic choice but a pragmatic one. Not even her love for a fresh set of bedazzled acrylics would get in the way of her strumming the soul out of her six-string Fender electric. The guitar wasn't the only thing she'd brought with her from Atlanta. In her lap sat "Friend," the pink stuffed animal who no doubt provided a bit of emotional support during a five-song set that forced the shy enigma out of her creative shell.
"Look, I'm really freaking excited to be here but I have social anxiety like a mother******," Walker told the NPR crowd at the end of her set, barely mumbling the expletive in an attempt to censor herself. "I'm freaked the hell out, I'm sweating, but this is so exciting for me."
A 23-year old singer-songwriter with an uncensored pen and brown-liquor vocals, Walker has become something of a patron saint for colored girls who've considered bossing up when heartbreak is too much. With the release of her official studio debut Over It, she made history last week by racking up the biggest streaming week of any female R&B artist ever. Meanwhile, the first lady of upstart label Love Renaissance (LVRN) is lowkey leading a sonic revolution in Atlanta that's turning the trap capital back into an R&B town. Her team was equally insistent on tricking out the Tiny Desk space by hanging lights that brought a diffuse glow to Walker's creative set.
For an artist who rarely grants interviews and admittedly dreads the public spotlight — despite an Instagram feed that clearly shows off her humorous, exhibitionist flair — Walker's Tiny Desk is revealing. In the span of 15 minutes, she performs fan favorites ("Session 32," "Wasted," "Riot") and the song that made Drake hop in her DMs, "Girls Need Love," before ending with current single "Playing Games." Even behind the bright lights and oversized eyeglass frames, her unadorned soul shines through.

Breaking down Donny Hathaway's masterpiece from 1973's EXTENSION OF A MAN (Atco): "Someday We'll All Be Free" (lyrics by Edward Howard) and why it's his greatest song. I'll analyze the music, dig into the lyrics, examine some individual performances on the track (including Marvin Stamm on trumpet and Willie Weeks on bass), and talk about some of the amazing techniques Donny used to make this a perfect song! Let's celebrate the genius of Donny Hathaway on the 50th anniversary of this timeless anthem.

Dec. 9, 2019 | Sidney Madden -- From the moment Raveena Aurora stepped into NPR's Music Department and looked at the Tiny Desk for the first time, she was ready. The Queens, N.Y. singer-songwriter and her team showed up early (which rarely happens) to meticulously arrange her stage props of homemade mushrooms and flowers, in the already endearingly cluttered space. These extra touches were meant to make clear that this performance would be all about community and safe spaces.
"A lot of my music talks about growing out of these really traumatic experiences," Raveena told the audience once the cameras started rolling. "And if you've ever gone through something similar that I talk about in my music, I just want you to know that in this space that we're in, you're extremely, extremely loved."
As Raveena pulled her audience in with the 2018 fan-favorite single "Honey," and dreamy standouts from her 2019 debut album, Lucid, a hush fell over the office. Though sweet and soft-spoken, she exudes the confidence and clarity of a seasoned vet. Beyond an astounding vocal ability — the rising star cultivated her range by growing up on Minnie Riperton, Sade and Asha Puthli, India's '70s disco queen — it's Raveena's precision and charisma that shines brightest within the close quarters of the desk. From a coordinated band rocking a melted creamsicle palette to surrounding themselves with Raveena's homemade decor, it's the genuine attention to detail that makes this performance so mesmerizing.

In April of 1992, Snoop Doggy Dogg was introduced to the world with an appearance on the Deep Cover soundtrack. As an 11 year old in Owensboro, Kentucky I probably wasn't the targeted demographic. However as soon as I heard the singles from Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic' on constant rotation via MTV, I couldn't wait to hear Snoop's solo album. The prior era of rappers NWA, Run DMC, LL, etc were all great, but they were all my parent's age. Me & Snoop were close enough in age, that we coulda been brothers. Snoop was the 1st voice of my generation. As much as I dig Alice In Chains & Nirvana, those guys weren't from my generation. Snoop was. Another thing that made me really connect to his music was seeing interviews saying his music was for everyone. Back in 1993 that wasn't always the message coming from hip hop artists. Being a white kid in Kentucky that loved hip hop since the 80's, I felt as out of place as 'Grandmaster B' looked on Married With Children sometimes. As soon as I heard Snoop say his music is for everyone, and that his 1st producer was a white dude made my 11 year old mind say "If Snoop says it's cool to be white and not only like his music, but be involved in it, who gives a damn what anyone else thinks? I'm been a fan ever since.
To celebrate 30 years of Snoop Dogg, I've put together this documentary that highlights the era that brought Tha Doggfather to worldwide fame.

In this clip, Boosie goes in-depth about why he has a problem with Kanye's "apology." He indicates that Kanye only thought of himself and his feelings when he famously said, “I know what it feels to have a knee on my neck right now.” From there, he addresses Kanye engaging him on Twitter with a cryptic message before explaining his well-thought-out response. Lastly, he explains why Kanye's behavior resembles the horror film, "Get Out."

Those Days
Remember when the street lights came on, we had to be home
Remember when Elm Street came on, couldn’t watch it alone
Remember every prank call we made, and star sixty nine
Remember tryin’ to hit eighty eight, to go back in time
Remember when they played “Purple Rain” to our first slow dance,
Remember when we thought that first base was just holding hands
Those days come back in the dead of night
Those days that felt like another life
What would you be doing back in those days?
We’d be turnin’ up the stereo
And play it everywhere we’d go
And so did everyone we’d know in those days
And everybody got to fall in love
With every movie made for us
And god I couldn’t get enough of those days
Remember every poster we had hangin’ on the wall
Remember every t-shirt we stole, from the local mall
(Ace Of Spades by Motörhead)
Remember Guns N’ Roses came out we were standing in line
Remember front row at that show, camped out all night
(Got so high Sweet Child O’ Mine)
Those days come back in the dead of night
Those days that felt like another life
What would you be doing back in those days?
We’d be turnin’ up the stereo
And play it everywhere we’d go
And so did everyone we’d know in those days
And everybody got to fall in love
With every movie made for us
And god I couldn’t get enough of those days
The time we’d waste cause life could wait
What we’d give to relive just a single day
The time we’d waste cause life could wait
What we’d give to relive just a single day
Instead of turning the page…
We’d be turnin’ up the stereo
And play it everywhere we’d go
And so did everyone we’d know in those days
And everybody got to fall in love
With every movie made for us
And god I couldn’t get enough of those days
Those days that felt like another life
Those days come back in the dead of night
Those days that felt like another life
What would you be doin’ back in those days?

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with an El Tiny takeover, featuring Jessie Reyez, Susana Baca and more musicians from all corners of Latinidad.
Stefanie Fernández | October 12, 2022
Tokischa came to NPR with a set of arrangements which, a conversation after the performance, she called "a little more Tiny," reworking her dembow tracks in a melange of other Caribbean and Latin American genres. True to her identity as an artist whose performance is aimed squarely at disarming respectability politics, she doesn't sanitize the originals. Instead, her performance subverts expectations by foregrounding her celebration of female sexual autonomy, ****ness and desire against a backdrop of popular folk genres. The juxtaposition succeeds uncannily, the kind of artistic strength that lands on the ears of people in power like a threat.
The dembow avant-gardist has incensed conservative pundits in the Dominican Republic and abroad. Her unfiltered expression has sparked moral panic and, elsewhere, drawn justifiable criticism. She opens with "Perra" — a collaboration she originally recorded with J Balvin and the video for which was criticized for racist imagery against Black women and was eventually deleted from YouTube. It's a surprising choice for an opener, even more so as a demure bossa nova. Tokischa lilts the song's chorus and playfully points to the audience.
Her distinctive voice and flow pair deftly with the switch-ups across Caribbean genres, from a bachata version of "Hola" to reggae on "Somos Iguales" and a mambo "Delincuente," the latter complete with a call-and-response that features an NPR audience for the first time probably ever responding "bellaca" ("horny").
"ESTILAZO" is completely transformed, the crisp house original slowed to a languid son backed by a tumbao piano riff in the neighborhood of "Chan Chan." The lyrics — among them "Lesbianismo entre mujeres, larga vida ****sexual," ("Lesbianism between women, long ****sexual life") and "Música con letras sucias, una suciedad divina" ("Music with dirty lyrics, a divine filthiness") — build like a manifesto, recasting what oppressors have deemed perverse as divine instead.
Each song is a surprise, and most of all the closer, "Kilos De Amor," a currently unreleased corrido. The genre experiments aren't just an El Tiny detour, but a signifier of an artist who both deeply knows where she comes from and who isn't afraid to see how far she can go.

Wallace Peeples better known as Wallo 267 joins The Pivot in a conversation storying his life from a young man growing up on the streets of Philly to serving 20 years in prison to being one of the original innovators in the podcast game and now considered a global influencer, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and marketing phenom.
Most well known for his cultural platform Million Dollaz Worth Of Game, which he created with his cousin Gillie Da King, a legendary Philadelphia rapper, Wallo shares his business model that has transcended the podcast game and made an impact around the world. With over 7 million + social media impressions weekly, Wallo has successfully turned his tough experiences, life lessons and natural business instincts into a multi million dollar collaboration.
Sharing with Fred, Ryan and Channing how he ended up in prison and his mindset growing up of what he thought earned respect and was the way to success, Wallo taps into an emotional side of his life that is painful but a lesson he applied since. Wallo shares with the guys how his two decades in prison prepared him for life as if he went to school so that when he came out he knew what his calling would be and how he wanted to be a person that he wished he had as a mentor growing up. Admitting that the scariest day of his life was the day he was released from prison with the choice of what to do next and how to get back into society, forging a different path. In his message, Wallo explains how less than 5 minutes of criminal activity cost him so much and landed him 20 years in jail and in his new life that same 5 minutes of energy landed him the opportunity of a lifetime.
Ryan acknowledges how Wallo inspires so many people and his enthusiasm is endless around making an impact and always working but feels there is a hole in his heart as he never talks of what he does for himself or that brings him joy. Channing chimes in that Wallo's life habits seem as if he is still institutionalized, keeping a regimented schedule and not very social unless it is for work. Fred is most impressed with the turnaround and Wallo's ability to build, sustain and leverage his social platform into a multi-million opportunity.
Opening up about business practices, supporting one another in the black community and following through on basic principles, Wallo gives insight into his brand building and tips on how anyone can make something from nothing.
