What's an artist to do when, instead of standing and dancing before a stadium of adoring fans, she's instead sitting behind the Tiny Desk?

You do exactly what Puerto Rican vocalist Kany García does: dig deep into the intimacy of her songwriting and the musicality of one of the most distinctive voices in any form of Latin music.

The first track, "Para Siempre" perfectly embodies a seductive declaration of togetherness with lyrics like: "I want to be the desire that brings you home every night." In "Mundo Inventado," the full power of her songwriting has me lost in my feels, as she sings of the plight of all immigrants everywhere who leave the known for the unknown. (Where is my tissue? I have something in my eye.)

She closes the set with her song whose profane title can't be written out fully but is as common as the sound of traffic across Latin America: "DPM (De Pxta Madre)." In García's masterful hands it becomes a colorful way to express the ups and downs of emotions of even the briefest romantic episode.

If there was ever any doubt that García brings the skills of one of the best lyricists of Latin America to the world of Spanish pop music, this performance proves it. It feels like she is singing her very personal messages of desire and longing just for me.

Uh, I mean, for all of us.

A fight broke out in the audience on Saturday night, bringing a halt to Detroit’s Riverfront Music Festival. R&B singer Monica left the Hart Plaza stage to intervene after seeing a man hitting a woman. The singer yelled from the audience, “You don’t hit no f**kin’ lady like that.” The audience cheered as Monica was helped back up to the stage. #Detroit #CrimeInTheD ™

Let him tell it, he started the wave. So what diabolically wavy story would I have to spin for you to understand what Max B meant and means to Hip Hop culture. One of a witty, charismatic personality, with ahead of his time approach to music, that just didn’t make it out soon enough. He had the talent, work ethic, and enough examples to finally take things serious and focus on the music, but you can’t escape your past and the people it was spent with. Also the story of how the lines between business and whatever else can cross and expose entire relationships. He made his mixtape debut in 2006 and later signed to Jim Jones’s spin off to Dip Set, Byrdgang. He’s had his hand in producing one of the biggest songs of the early 2000s hip hop with his contributions on Jones’s hit single “We Fly High” R.I.P Stack Bundles, who’s officially credited as the writer for the record. In 2009 Max B was sentenced to 75 years in prison for conspiracy in an arm robbery case turned Homicide. Although he was not present, he was handed a mastermind role, which was confirmed by ex girlfriend, who testified against him in court in exchange for a reduced plea. After his incarceration, his stardom grew to a cult like level, with fans new and old riding his biggest wave to date. Free Max B campaigns everywhere and the word wavy added to the hip hop adjective Hall Of Fame along with classics, like Dope, Banger, and Boughie. He’s recently had his sentence reduced and is expected to be home sometime this year. But for now, here’s what stunted the musical growth of Max B. Did JIM JONES Wrong MAX B! What REALLY Happened?
