Today we’re sharing one of the most intimate conversations Rick Rubin has ever had on Broken Record. It’s with the famed guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante.
Rick Rubin last spoke to John back in April when the Chili Peppers were getting ready to release their album, Unlimited Love, their first record with Frusciante in 16 years. Unlimited Love debuted at number one in the U.S. and 15 other countries. Today, just a little more than six months later, the Chili Peppers released a second Rick Rubin-produced album, Return Of The Dream Canteen.
On today’s episode we’ll hear John Frusciante talk about the band’s early music, including the making of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. They talk about how his contributions on slower, more melodic songs like “Under The Bridge” and “Breaking The Girl” helped expand the Chili Peppers funk punk sound. John also talks candidly about the dark, drug-addicted years that followed the intense success of Blood Sugar. And he explains how he was able to finally get sober and rejoin the Chili Peppers to record their classic, commercial comeback album, Californication.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory—maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations—in a world without liner notes—for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

March 1, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- Roy Ayers arrived at his Tiny Desk performance beaming with positivity. The 77-year-old funk icon and vibraphonist sauntered through the office with a Cheshire grin on his face, sharing jokes with anyone within earshot. Accompanying him was a trio of brilliantly seasoned musicians — keyboardist Mark Adams, bassist Trevor Allen and drummer Christopher De Carmine. Later during the performance, pride washed across Ayers' face as his bandmates took the spotlight. (Be sure to watch as Adams woos not just the room but brightens Ayers' face during his solo.)
The set began with one of Ayers' more recognizable hits: an extended version of "Searching," a song that embodies the eternal quest for peace and love. During "Black Family" (from his 1983 album Lots Of Love), you'll hear him call out "Fela" throughout. That's because Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti was a huge influence on Ayers in the late 1970s; the two eventually collaborated on an album, 1980's Music Of Many Colors. "Black Family" is, in part, a tribute to Fela, even if the original version didn't include his name.
Concluding this mini-concert, Ayers closed the set out with his signature tune, "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", a feel-good ode if there ever was one. The essence of this song flowed right through him and out to the NPR audience.

Don Williams performing I Believe In You
Lyrics:
I don't believe in superstars
Organic food and foreign cars
I don't believe the price of gold
The certainty of growing old
That right is right and left is wrong
That north and south can't get along
That east is east and west is west
And being first is always best
But I believe in love
I believe in babies
I believe in mom and dad
And I believe in you
Well I don't believe that heaven waits
For only those who congregate
I like to think of God as love
He's down below, he's up above
He's watching people everywhere
He knows who does and doesn't care
And I'm an ordinary man
Sometimes I wonder who I am
But I believe in love
I believe in music
I believe in magic
And I believe in you
I know with all my certainty
What's going on with you and me
Is a good thing
It's true, I believe in you
I don't believe virginity
Is as common as it used to be
In working days and sleeping nights
That black is black and white is white
That Superman and Robin Hood
Are still alive in Hollywood
That gasoline's in short supply
The rising cost of getting by
But I believe in love
I believe in old folks
I believe in children
I believe in you
I believe in love
I believe in babies
I believe in mom and dad
And I believe in you

Matt is back for another talk: this time we go deep into his relationship with Jeff and why he chose to leave the band in 1996. Matt also talks about what he appreciated about Jeff Buckley as a composer and as a mentor. I also ask him some questions that our other guests had about Jeff: Was he shy? Was he worn down by the heavy emotional content of the songs? Matt always gives detailed answers, often using metaphors to get his points across. Any musician or Buckley fan will get a lot of of this candid and sometimes emotional conversation. Thanks Matt. It was honor! You are a legend!

"From recording the seminal cult-creating album Grace with Jeff Buckley to years of touring with the beloved St. Vincent, I've worked with a wide spectrum of artists over the past two decades including Rufus Wainwright, Angus and Julia Stone, and recently Miike Snow.
I'm originally from Texas but living in New York City opened up the most opportunities for developing a drumming career. I've recorded and played with Rhodes, Jade Bird, Teddy Thompson, Jeff Taylor, John Mayer, Dan Mangan, Dean Wareham of Galaxy 500, Tal Wilkenfeld, Will Stratton, Elysian Fields, Cones, Dope Lemon, Martha Wainwright, The Walking Who, Gabriel Kahane, Chris Stills, Anna Calvi, Duncan Sheik, Vivian Bond, Harper Simon, Keren Ann, Gerry Leonard, Reeves Gabrels, Tom Freund, Beth Orton, Suzanne Vega, Rickie Lee Jones and Miirrors.
I have also have worked with great producers such as Marius Devries, Rick Rubin, Simone Felice, Andy Wallace, Eric J, Andrew Wyatt, John Agnello, John Alagia, Thomas Bartlett, Tony Buchen, Tony Visconti, Tony Berg, Ben Harper, Hod David, and Kieran Kelly.
Moving successively from NYC to Los Angeles, and then to Austin has allowed for an expanded studio setup that is ideal for remote recording. Signature drum parts, rhythmic hooks, hypnotic patterns, contrasting textures, and heavy grooves have always been my passion.
I'm looking forward to creative interfacing with great musical minds, either in person or across the world!"

T-Pain's fingerprints are all over pop and R&B and hip-hop. He wasn't the first musician to use Auto-Tune as an instrument — he noticed it on a Jennifer Lopez remix, and remembers "Deep" well — but it was, as he says, his style. For a while, in the mid-2000s, he lived at the top of the charts. He dominated that brief moment of our lives when ringtones were a thing. He was celebrated as an innovator, and he happily took his talents where he was invited, which was everywhere.
But somewhere along the way, somebody got it twisted. "People felt like I was using it to sound good," says T-Pain, in an interview that will air on All Things Considered. "But I was just using it to sound different.”
He just turned 30, but T-Pain has already done enough to drop a greatest hits album next week. We asked him if he'd grace the Tiny Desk without any embellishment or effects to show what's really made his career: his voice, and those songs.--FRANNIE KELLEY

Now more than ever, hip-hop artists have the power to be the masters of their own destiny. Empowered by the instant access to the entire planet that the internet and social media provide, anyone with drive and determination can bypass their physical boundaries and reach audiences around the globe. Able to make their voice echo with just the tools that are in the palm of their hand or perched on their desktop, this drastic overhaul in both the music industry’s means of distribution and the ability to generate a fanbase should’ve meant, theoretically at least, that the idea of record labels ruling the roost should’ve been on the out.

BLACKPINK - ‘Shut Down’
Blackpink in your area
Blackpink in your area
컴백이 아냐 떠난 적 없으니까
고개들이 돌아 진정해 목 꺾일라
분홍빛의 얼음 drip drip drip freeze ‘em on sight
Shut it down what what what what
게임이 아냐 진 적이 없으니까
짖어봐 네 목에 목줄은 내 거니까
땅바닥에 닿은 pedal we go two zero five
Shut it down uh uh uh uh
초록 비를 내려 머리 위로 Don’t trip, baby
겸손하게 그냥 앉아있어 Just sit, baby
Praying for my downfall, many have tried, baby
Catch me when you hear my Lamborghini go vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom
When we pull up you know it’s a shutdown
간판 내리고 문 잠가 shut down
Whip it whip it whip it whip it
Whip it whip it whip it whip it
It’s black and it’s pink once the sun down
When we pull up you know it’s a shutdown
간판 내리고 문 잠가 shut down
Whip it whip it whip it whip it
Whip it whip it whip it whip it
Keep watching me shut it down
Nah
You don’t wanna be on my bad side that’s right I’m slidin’ through
Bunch of wannabes that wanna be me, me three if I was you
Been around the world, pearls on ya girl, VVS's we invested uh
Need a lesson see the necklace, see these dresses
We don’t buy it we request it uh
A rockstar, a popstar but rowdier
Say bye to the paparazzi, get my good side, I'll smile for ya
Know it ain’t fair to ya, it’s scarin’ ya like what now
Blackpink in your area, the area been shut down. It’s a shutdown
네 다음 답안지야 똑바로 봐 don’t sleep baby
뒤집어봐 이건 가격표야 ain’t cheap baby
Stay in your own lane ‘cause I’m ‘bout to swerve
Catch me when you hear my Lamborghini go vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom

Lyrics:
I called him everything under the sun
Kinda under my breath and when I was done
I slammed my bedroom door
Did some stomping around on my bedroom floor
Dad walked in, no knock, no grace
Said if you think I walked in like I own this place
Boy, it’s ‘cause I do
And I’ve got some things I wanna call you too
CHORUS
You’re a son of a momma
You’re a son of a dad
Who will never stop loving you and being there
And giving you everything they have
Someday you’re gonna get it boy
You’ll admit it boy
Just like I did with my old man
You’re a son of a momma, a son of a dad
Who give a damn
He took the keys to my new used car
Pulled the “long as you’re living under my roof” card
I always hated what he called tough love
But now I thank the good Lord above
I’m a son of a momma
A son of a dad
Who will never stop loving me and being there
And giving me everything they have
Let me tell ya that I get it now
#dilloncarmichael #sonofa #Grandoleopry
I’ll admit it now
Why I am the man I am
I’m a son of a momma, a son of a dad
Who give a damn
These days keeping it together for forever is a dying breed
Now I know why my broken home buddies call me
A lucky S.O.B.
I’m a son of a momma
A son of a dad
Who will never stop loving me and being there
And giving me everything they have
Let me tell ya that I get it now
I’ll admit it now
Why I am the way I am
I’m a son of a momma, a son of a dad
Who give a damn

Ebro Darden sits down in the studio with Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak to discuss their album, ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic.’ The stars aligned for these two R&B powerhouses when they began working in the studio together. Anderson .Paak’s underground roots and musical prowess blended perfectly with Bruno Mars’ gifts in songwriting and producing, and with the help of legends like Bootsy Collins, D’Mille, and Baby Face, they created something they hope will “last forever.” The duo breaks down the inspirations behind tracks like “Skate,” “Put On A Smile,” and “Leave The Door Open,” and share their excitement to get back on stage and feel this music alongside the audience once again. Tupac with Death Row Disses Nas in Interview at MTV Music Awards!

Tupac Amaru Shakur (/ˈtuːpɑːk ʃəˈkʊər/ TOO-pahk shə-KOOR;[1] born Lesane Parish Crooks; June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), also known by his stage names 2Pac and briefly as Makaveli, was an American rapper, songwriter, and actor.[2] Shakur has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.[3] His double disc albums All Eyez on Me and his Greatest Hits are among the best selling albums in the United States.[4] He has been listed and ranked as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines, including Rolling Stone which ranked him 86th on its list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[5] Consistently ranked as one of the greatest rappers ever, he was ranked number 2 by MTV in their list of The Greatest MCs of All-Time in 2006.[6] 2Pac is also ranked as the most influential rapper of all time.[7][8][9][10][11]
Shakur began his career as a roadie, backup dancer, and MC for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground, eventually branching off as a solo artist.[12][13][14] The themes of most of Shakur's songs revolved around the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism and other social problems. Both of his parents and several other of his family were members of the Black Panther Party, whose ideals were reflected in his songs.
During the latter part of his career, Shakur was a vocal participant in the so-called East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry, becoming involved in conflicts with other rappers, producers and record-label staff members, most notably The Notorious B.I.G. and the label Bad Boy Records.[15]
On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada.[16] He was taken to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he died six days later.
Upon his release from Clinton Correctional Facility in 1995, Shakur immediately went back to song recording. He began a new group called Outlaw Immortalz. Shakur began recording his first album with Death Row and released the single "California Love" soon after.
On February 13, 1996, Shakur released his fourth solo album, All Eyez on Me. This double album was the first and second of his three-album commitment to Death Row Records. It sold over nine million copies.[68] The record was a general departure from the introspective subject matter of Me Against the World, being more oriented toward a thug and gangsta mentality. Shakur continued his recordings despite increasing problems at the Death Row label. Dr. Dre left his post as house producer to form his own label, Aftermath. Shakur continued to produce hundreds of tracks during his time at Death Row, most of which would be released on his posthumous albums Still I Rise, Until the End of Time, Better Dayz, Loyal to the Game and Pac's Life. He also began the process of recording an album with the Boot Camp Clik and their label Duck Down Records, both New York – based, entitled One Nation.[69]
On June 4, 1996, he and Outlawz released the diss track "Hit 'Em Up", a scathing lyrical assault on Biggie and others associated with him. In the track, Shakur claimed to have had sexual intercourse with Faith Evans, Biggie's wife at the time, and attacked Bad Boy's street credibility. Shakur was convinced that some members associated with Bad Boy had known about the '94 attack on him beforehand due to their behavior that night and what his sources told him. After the attack, Shakur immediately accused Jimmy Henchman (an associate of Bad Boy CEO Sean Combs) of orchestrating the attack, according to a 2005 interview with Henchman in Vibe magazine. After the attack, Shakur therefore aligned himself with Suge, Death Row's CEO, who was already bitter toward Combs over a 1995 incident at the Platinum Club in Atlanta, Georgia, which culminated in the death of Suge Knight's friend and bodyguard, Jake Robles; Knight was adamant in voicing his suspicions of Combs' involvement.[70]
Collaborator Buckshot claimed in 2015 that Shakur defended him against Suge Knight, who had insisted that the East Coast rapper could not come with him to Las Vegas on the grounds of the ongoing hip hop rivalry. Shakur asserted that he would not board the plane unless accompanied by Buckshot and was described by the fellow rapper as looking "discomforted" while they recorded a song together in a studio after Shakur "tore up the plane tickets".
