Wyclef Jean: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 6

Nov. 6, 2017 | Bobby Carter -- Wyclef Jean doesn't get his just due. It was only after The Fugees had the world in their collective palms, and then disbanded, when we got to know his unadulterated abilities as a musician — his first solo album The Carnival was a project equal to (if not greater than) his greatest successes with The Fugees. From there, his focus shifted to discovering and producing stars, stretching all genres in his solo mission, and philanthropic work for his homeland of Haiti.

A seasoned pro, he walked through our doors greeting and charming anyone within arm's reach. Once in front of an audience, he was in attack mode, playing every instrument in sight. Clef doled out stories ranging from his upbringing and rise with The Fugees to intimate musical encounters with Whitney Houston and Destiny's Child. The mentions were properly placed and added substance to the performance, but to me, he pulled what I'd call a "subtle stunt." Hip-hop is and has always been about youth and freshness, so most elder statesmen of rap aren't celebrated to the degree of their peers in rock 'n' roll and country music. Every now and again it's necessary to inform the younger generation, who would otherwise never know these epic moments ever happened.

Over the past few years, we've seen a resurgence of sorts for Wyclef. Young Thug noted a heavy influence, naming a song after him and then tag-teaming on a different track on last year's Jeffery; one of the biggest songs of 2017, DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts," prominently samples Wyclef's colossal collaboration with Carlos Santana on "Maria Maria." His career trajectory was recently documented on TV One's Unsung, and in September he dropped the third installment of The Carnival. He starts his set with two highlights from his latest record, and finishes with a climactic rendition of his signature hit like you've never seen or heard.

Set List

"Borrowed Time"
"Turn Me Good"
"Gone Till November"

Veruca Salt, named after a character from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," became synonymous with 90s rock. However, the band members were unaware that "Veruca Salt" also referred to a plantar wart. The band's journey began in 1992 when Louise Post and Nina Gordon, inspired by their shared love of music, formed the group.

Both Post and Gordon, coming from musical families that eventually divorced, found solace in music. Post, already a musician, and Gordon, initially reluctant to pursue music, formed a bond. Despite Gordon's early struggles with instruments, she eventually learned the guitar with the help of her brother Jim Shapiro. The band aimed to create a unique sound, blending their influences like Prince, The Beatles, and My Bloody Valentine.

Veruca Salt initially started as a duo, playing folk music in Chicago coffee houses. They expanded to a four-piece, adding Jim Shapiro on drums and Jim Lack on bass. The band's name was chosen from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," not because they were fans, but because they identified with the character's assertiveness.

As Chicago's music scene gained national attention, Veruca Salt's popularity soared. Their first gig was in Wicker Park, a hub for Chicago's independent music scene. The band's demo tape, taken to Minty Fresh Records by a local funk band, led to the recording of their single "Seether/All Hail Me."

"Seether" became a local hit, gaining traction on radio stations and catching the attention of major labels. Minty Fresh Records signed Veruca Salt, and they recorded their debut album, "American Thighs," in just 10 days. The album's success attracted Geffen Records, who signed the band to a five-album deal.

The Geffen deal, though financially lucrative, brought criticism and accusations of selling out. Veruca Salt faced backlash from the media, and their early live shows were criticized. Despite the challenges, "American Thighs" went platinum, and the band toured with acts like Hole and Live.

In 1996, Veruca Salt released the EP "Blow It Out Your Ass It's Veruca Salt" in response to critics. Their second album, "Eight Arms to Hold You" (1997), produced hits like "Volcano Girls." However, internal conflicts led to members leaving, and by 1998, only Louise Post remained.

Post continued with new members, releasing "Resolver" in 2000, but the band's momentum slowed. Veruca Salt went on hiatus in 2012, and during this time, Post and Gordon mended their friendship. The original lineup reunited in 2013, releasing "Ghost Notes" in 2015. The band actively supports various causes but lost master recordings in the 2008 Universal Studios fire.

Despite setbacks, Veruca Salt persists. In 2022, Louise Post released demos from the late '90s, and she plans to release a solo album in 2023. The band remains a resilient force in the ever-changing landscape of rock music.

Lyrics:
I’m about to explode
Speeding down a warpath, front seat.
Self-offense. Call it, “battle by proxy.”
Goldilocks distance.
How can I miss with a crack shot aim and verbal game like this?
Tell that masses all to behold and get another fighter on the phone.
All the ones they sent so far they couldn’t stop me.
All the ones they sent so far didn’t get so far.

You wanna start it up without a way to win?
I’m betting double or nothing but I’m not gambling.
You try to cage me up, but I got out again.
You better cover your eyes, it's about to get..

Ruthless! Ruthless!
It’s about to get ruthless! Ruthless!
It’s time to get ruthless! Ruthless!
Everybody get ruthless! Ruthless!

It’s time to let the mud fly.
Target identified.
It’s time to get ruthless!
Statement is certified.
It’s time to get ruthless!
Cover your eyes, yeah!
It’s time to get ruthless! Ruthless!
Ruthleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess!

I’m about to go rogue!
Swimming in a shark tank, field mouse!
Missing every turn and still banking in my wheelhouse
Bait ‘em all, hook ‘em all, sink ‘em!
Then run through them like it’s the Olympics of Life,
And the road to gold,
Is brick by brick.
And only the bold,
Even broken and sick,
Are showing up to cause another episode.
You’re in the presence of a monster, beastmode!

Ruthless!

Call it what you wanna call it, I’m calling it criminal.
Judgement day coming, it’s about to get physical.
Acting all righteous but you’re too lawless.
Shadows are moving so they always got you crawling.
Call it what you wanna call it, I’m calling it criminal.
It’s about to get lawless.
It’s about to get physical.
And it’s about to get..

Ruthless! Ruthless!
It’s about to get ruthless! Ruthless!
It’s time to get ruthless! Ruthless!
Everybody get ruthless! Ruthless!

It’s time to let the mud fly.
Target identified.
It’s time to get ruthless!
Statement is certified.
It’s time to get ruthless!
Cover your eyes, yeah!
It’s time to get ruthless! Ruthless!

The band has never done a video like this before, but says it was like being on a movie set with Director Francesca Ludikar at the helm leading moment after bloody moment of this fast paced, heart pounding roller coaster of a video. “We’re aiming for the temple, swinging for the fences and making heads rock in this one. Only one of us will be left standing in the end.” says the band.

The concept was written by singer Elias Soriano and even he warns viewers, “This is what happens when you take an infectious riff, anthemic lyrics, an aluminum baseball bat, some duct tape, and a grudge, put it in a blender and serve it cold blooded.”

Lyrics:

Me gusta tu cuerpo, dímelo mami
Ese booty te lo hiciste en Miami
Ponte pa’ mi pa’ yo ponerme pa’ ti

Si me mata yo te mato, Dile a tu gato

Si tu me dejas yo te parto

Me gusta tu cuerpo, dímelo mami
Ese booty te lo hiciste en Miami
Ponte pa’ mi pa’ yo ponerme pa’ ti

Perreando, tu quieres duro x 12

Lyrics / Letra

Fuma, bebe mójame to’ los asientos

Fuma, bebe mójame to’ los asientos

Tienes maldad, baby tú no eres tan sana

Fuma, bebe mójame to’ los asientos

Lyrics:
[Intro: Wisin & Jhay Cortez]
W, Yandel
Jhay Cortez
¿Me sigue'?
This is the remix
(Jhayco)

[Verso 1: Jhay Cortez, Wisin & Yandel]
Yo te agarraré y haré contigo (No' vamo'; ¡duro!)

[Coro: Jhay Cortez & Wisin]

[Verso 3: Jhay Cortez]

[Coro: Yandel & Jhay Cortez]

[Verso 4: Wisin & Yandel]
Si yo te quiero, y tú me quieres
Entonces, ¿por qué ya no vienes? (Tú me dices)

Tú quiere' sexo, no quiere' rosa', y

[Coro: Wisin]
