San Diego-based trio Thee Sacred Souls made its mark at the Tiny Desk with satin vocals and vintage melodies. Paying homage to southern California Latino culture meeting American soul roots, the group's sweet fusion melodies brought history and love into the space.

The trio opened the concert with "Will I See You Again?," which tells the tale of a confused, forlorn lover with soft, harmony-laden lyrics and bouncy guitar and bass. Lead singer Josh Lane then pauses to share a message of love, the kind the band is focused on consistently extending. "Love Is The Way" paints a picturesque image of a sweet, timeless love fit to be celebrated top-down out the back of a low-rider. "Easier Said than Done" brings more reflective energy atop floaty high harmonies from Tiny Desk veteran Astyn Turr. With a transition to a horns-adorned "Love Comes Easy," the band hits even more of a groove before ending with the easy-listening "Can I Call You Rose?" The band brought what it does best: great melodies, romantic lyrics and a vibe that fills any space it plays with light and tranquility, fit for any era.

It's a longstanding tradition for musicians to leave a small something-or-other on the thoroughly disorganized wall of "stuff" that backdrops our Tiny Desk. My favorite is the Johann Sebastian Bach bobblehead.

But now, move over Bach. Here comes Philip Glass.

When Timo Andres arrived at our office to play a pair of etudes by Philip Glass, the director of Glass' publishing house, Adrienne White, tagged along and generously donated the only remaining Philip Glass bobblehead to NPR — an appropriate gesture to mark the composer's 87th birthday on Jan. 31.

The wiggly statue depicts Glass standing at one of his trusty Farfisa organs, an instrument associated with the early days of his career when he played intricate patterns over and over in his SoHo loft, as fans and fellow musicians, like Laurie Anderson, laid on the floor and let the music wash over them.

Much of Glass' music can have that transforming, mesmerizing effect, including these two etudes. They are opposite twins from a set of 20, pieces Glass wrote over a two-decade span, beginning in the early 1990s. Andres knows the music intimately — he helped edit and design a gorgeous new folio facsimile of the sheet music.

With Etude No. 6, Andres combines sewing machine precision with a deep feeling for Glass' melodies, stitching together delicate arpeggios and thundering chords. Etude No. 5 is, by contrast, a meditation in slow motion. A see-sawing rhythmic idea sets the foundation for a journey wherein time seems to stand almost still while the spaces between the notes speak volumes.

Sometimes a gentle touch is the strongest touch. When Elmiene sweeps through the cozy shadows of tunes like “Mama” or “Someday,” he lets his husky croon morph into a luminous coo. The UK singer possesses a variety of ways to enhance each phrase of a song. That skill draws you deeper into his performances, because he’s finding ways to not only amplify, but also translate, a tune’s emotions. It’s the definition of artistry, and surely a reason why fans leave comments describing how his music touched them in a unique way. The Oxford native is a singer who’s bending neo-soul towards a futuristic R&B in a way that allows room for old school craft and disarmingly candid emotions. He’s told interviewers that he’s proud to work the “same path as the greats: Stevie, Donnie, D’Angelo. I wanna be on the rainbow road they raced on - even if I’m last.” His story actually starts with another hero. When Elmiene was a kid, a teacher uploaded a clip of him singing Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror,” and he became a schoolyard sensation. Then came poetry, which was “a little too insular,” he recalls. Then music, which he loves because it makes him account for how his listeners react. In 2021 his shimmering “Golden” turned lots of heads; it made an even bigger splash when it soundtracked Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton show in Miami that year. At the same time a spin on D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” grabbed the spotlight. That one-time notion of becoming a security guard was thrown out when record labels began knocking, and the dude with the perpetual Afro-pick was being co-signed by Missy Elliott, Elton John, and Questlove. Last March’s ‘EL-MEAN’ proved that he was the real deal; the new ‘Marking My Time’ reconfirms the same. It also reveals that his version of soul allows room for folk and alt mindsets. No wonder he recently joked that his work has plenty of “stretch marks.” His ATW 2024 performances of “Someday” and “Marking My Time” illustrate how seductive that gentle touch can be.
