*ABOUT THIS VIDEO*

Join me for this deep dive into music history as I step inside the studio with Steve Porcaro, the legendary songwriter, session keyboardist, and founding member of Toto, to hear the full, real story behind how he wrote “Human Nature,” one of Michael Jackson’s most beloved and timeless songs.

Steve and I sit down at the synths to re-create some of the signature “Human Nature” parts, talk through the gear, textures, and techniques, and revisit what it felt like to craft these sounds in the early ’80s.

Steve also opens up about how the track began as his personal demo and how Quincy Jones heard something special in it, transforming it into a Michael Jackson classic by bringing in world-class musicians like Steve Lukather, whose unmistakable R&B guitar flavor helped define the final sound and turn it into a “Michael song.”

If that isn't enough, you'll hear first-hand, never-before-told stories about Steve’s unexpected songwriting sessions with Michael himself , including the two unreleased songs they created together. Michael would show up at Steve’s studio unannounced, ready to work. Only weeks after Thriller was released, with Michael at his peak, the two of them were already deep into making brand-new music. Steve shares details about the still-unreleased tracks they worked on: “Chicago 1945” and “Dream Away.”

Along the way, Steve recalls unforgettable studio moments from working with Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and the incredible Los Angeles session scene.

Lyrics:
Born into Kentucky smoke
His mama was his one hero
When he told me her name
I wasn’t thinking straight
Cause he had emerald eyes and auburn hair
I shoulda known right then and there
This would only go one way
I was headed for heartbreak

Ohhh he’s just like his mother
Is it any wonder, that

I caught him in the dead of night
With lipstick on his suit and tie
He still denies everything he did to me

I’m just another fool who fell for him
And the vision of what could’ve been
But what was I expecting him to be
The son of Jolene

Don’t think I’ll ever love again
Cause he’s still got me in his hands
While he’s holding someone else
Now I know how Dolly felt

Guess he was never mine to keep
So why do I keep losing sleep
When he’s the one to blame
And he’s never gonna change
It’s written in his DNA, cause

I caught him in the dead of night
With lipstick on his suit and tie
He still denies everything he did to me

I’m just another fool who fell for him
And the vision of what could’ve been
But what was I expecting him to be
The son of Jolene

Ohhh he’s just like his mother
So there’ll always be another, cause

I caught him in the dead of night
With lipstick on his suit and tie
He still denies everything he did to me

I’m just another fool who fell for him
And the vision of what could’ve been
But what was I expecting him to be
The son of Jolene

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
It’s something that you’d never understand
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
That boy you raised will never be a man

Letra:

Saturno

Ahora me revientan to’ los sesos
Si yo no quería dejarte ir

Hay un contenido de ti
Que no lo puedo borrar, no lo puedo borrar, baby
Anoche no me pude aguantar, lo tuve que mirar
Me empecé a tocar recordando

Si yo no quería dejarte ir

Oh, oh, oh
Como dejarte ir
Dime como, dime donde
Y lo hago, mi nena

Oh, oh, oh
Como dejarte ir
Dime como, dime donde
Y lo hago mi nena

Dime quien fue
Como dejarte ir
Ahora me revienta hasta los sesos
Y yo no quería dejarte ir

Lyrics:
Well I'm shameless when it comes to loving you
I'll do anything you want me to
I'll do anything at all

And I'm standing here for all the world to see
Oh baby that's what's left of me
Don't have very far to fall

You know now I'm not a man who's ever been
Insecure about the world I've been livin' in
I don't break easy I have my pride
But if you need to be satisfied

I'm shameless, oh honey I don't have a prayer
Every time I see you standin' there
I go down upon my knees

Is it possible to be ubiquitous and behind-the-scenes at the same time? That pretty much sums up Don Was and his long career in the music business.

After co-leading the funky pop-rock band Was (Not Was) in the 1980s, Was went on to win an armful of Grammy awards as a producer. He's worked with Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, Elton John, Ringo Starr and Bob Weir, to name just a few. Since 2012, he has been president of the legendary Blue Note Records.

Was is also a son of Detroit. In recent years, he put together a band under his own name for the first time: Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble. "We are on a mission to promulgate the indigenous sounds of our hometown of Detroit, Michigan," he explains.

This is a tight and powerful group, with an emphasis on the groove, but all eyes and ears are on lead vocalist Steffanie Christi'an. In this Tiny Desk performance, she breathes a very different kind of fire into the Grateful Dead classic "The Music Never Stopped" and smolders on re-working of Hank Williams' "I Ain't Got Nothing But Time." The entire set is a perfect example of how, as the Dead used to say, "the music plays the band."
