NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. This celebration highlights the beautiful cornucopia of Black music and our special way of presenting it. We hope you enjoy.

Kirk Franklin, set up with his band and choir in a corner of Uncle Jessie's Kitchen, makes a declaration. "I know you're at home right now, in your draws, listening to some Jesus music. It's ok. Jesus loves you in your draws!" The Arlington, Texas studio, named after a long time close friend, features a large photo of the iconic "I AM A MAN" protest signs from the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike on the wall. The jubilant energy that Franklin and company emit, juxtaposed with a visual reminder of the strife that Black people have endured is illustrative of the importance of gospel music in the Black community.
For nearly 30 years, Franklin has been widely regarded for revolutionizing gospel. He incorporated secular music, particularly hip-hop, while preserving the message and integrity of traditional gospel. Here, he and his powerhouse choir pace through a decades-long, sixteen Grammy award winning discography of faith, praise and encouragement while cracking plenty of jokes. I cannot recall a more moving Tiny Desk home performance.
All month long, we've presented artists that speak to the diversity and complexity of Black music--where we've been, where we are and where we're going. For the final show, we take it back to the spiritual roots and there's no one more fitting to cap things off than Mr. Kirk Franklin.

January 12, 2003 one of the best battles in Philadelphia history would take place between 2 of the cities heavyweights, ELLIOT NESS and HOLLOWMAN. This was part of the GARAGE BATTLE that was orchestrated between members of Take Down Records and Ice City. Although neither MC was apart of either crew, the night basically turned into a free for all and some of the best rose to the top to make history. At the time, Ness was nationally known for MAKING DA BAND and tearing up the underground scene through mix tapes and DVD appearances with his crew YHM. Hollowman represented his crew the Paper Chasers and was well known in the city as one of the best on the underground. He was a regular at Club Flow's showcases and battles, and his crew was heavy on the mixtape scene. The stars were aligned this night and the rest is history. This battle broke down doors for the underground rap scene in Philly with the audio making it's way onto Power99 FM's Friday night underground radio show (The Come Up Show), and it was regularly requested for years to follow.

On October 4th 2019 Juice WRLD & NBA Youngboy released "Bandit" with a music video directed by Cole Bennet. This is my behind the scenes vlog from that trip & shoot. The actual video was shot on September 15th in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The first location was a gator farm with a bunch of wild creatures in the swamp. "When I'm playing snare, bass drum, cymbals, I hear orchestral sounds. I hear a universe of sounds," says drummer and composer Nate Smith. Audience members present at Crosstown Arts in Memphis, Tenn. on May 7 were welcomed into a new section of Nate Smith's musical universe: When Smith and his ensemble KINFOLK took the stage, they were joined by a string octet comprised of members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The addition of live string accompaniment heightens the sense of theatricality and lushness already present in Smith's music. For pieces like "Home Free (for Peter Joe)," which already include strings on the recordings, this concert is an opportunity to hear it performed as Smith originally conceived it. Hurray for the Riff Raff was a natural pick for NPR Music's 15th-anniversary celebration, given that we've been following Alynda Segarra's eternally shape-shifting roots-rock band for almost as long as we've been around. Segarra just released HFTRR's eighth album, LIFE ON EARTH, earlier this year, and its songs of survival, community and rediscovery translated to a fiery, inspired set at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club.

Eliane Elias and her husband and bassist, Marc Johnson, arrived the day before this Tiny Desk to check out the space and audition the just-delivered shiny Yamaha digital piano. We all worked to make sure that every detail, including the sound and camera angles, were just right. And it turned out great. The meticulousness and care that went into this concert is evident in the brilliance of the performance.
Elias and her band brought a little bit of Brazil with this commanding performance of the best of the Brazilian jazz genre. Watch how the piano keys sit comfortably under Elias' hands, and how the dynamic syncopation in her percussive left hand complements the beautiful melodic lines of her right, both blending perfectly with the musicianship of her talented band. This superb combination of Afro-Latin rhythms, like samba and bossa nova, with straight-ahead styles make for really infectious music.
Eliane Elias was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up in a musical household. By the time she was 10 she was already a huge jazz fan. Today, she has her own fandom and a 31-album catalog that includes her latest release, Quietude, and Mirror Mirror, a project with Chick Corea and Chucho Valdés that won both a Grammy award and a Latin Grammy for best Latin jazz album earlier this year.

Grammy nominated, entrepreneur, philanthropist and now author, Fat Joe, joins Ryan, Fred and Channing for a conversation covering the release of his highly anticipated memoir, “The Book of Jose: A Memoir.” Taking a trip down memory lane, Joe opens up to the guys about the highs and lows of his career, parenting, philanthropy, miscues in his life and discloses some never-heard before moments and stories that peel back the layers of this young man who made it out of the Bronx.
From growing up poor, to losing friends in music and from the neighborhood, to his climb to the top of music and stardom to thoughts of taking his own life to forming a close bond with Big Pun to turning pain into inspiration and respect to the greats who came before him is all detailed in Joe's book that comes out today.
People see the end results and where he is now, but few understand the struggles and dark moments endured to get to this point in life. Although everything looks on the up and up now, Joe reveals his inner struggles and how he feels like there is a recurring shadow in his life that comes from betrayal and unexpected hurt. At his core, Joe feels he is a good guy doing bad things and he’s been working to set his legacy straight with each level of success and growth.
Fat Joe admits that his upbringing in the Bronx wasn’t ideal but his mother’s strength served as the glue for the family and the financial struggles he experienced as a child helped shape the man he is today and his unique appreciation for life and forgiveness. Making music changed his life and Joe credits hip-hop stemming from minority communities as an attempt to make light of oppression and find light in dark times.
Channing pushes back on his words, asking Joe where the desire to do bad things came from despite growing up in a loving household as he acknowledges that he did a lot of bad things, some that others knew about and some that no one ever found out about and he asks him how he got to that place in life. Opening up about one moment which changed Joe's perspective on life and made him move differently is revealed as he shares a story of betrayal by a person closest to him that forever changed how he moved.
The guys ask Joe what his take is on all the hate and animosity in the music world and why it translates to killing each other and taking out people in their own communities. Referencing the recent passing of Takeoff and the others who have passed in their communities is a very painful topic for Joe to talk about. Showing mutual respect and admiration for his mentee DJ Khaled and talks about their close knit bond and how he was there from the beginning of his career and ecstatic about where he is now in his life.
