Angela (Theme From 'Taxi') - Bob James (1978) Hotney 4 Streams • 4 years ago

Robert McElhiney James (born December 25, 1939) is a jazz and jazz fusion keyboardist, arranger and producer. During the 1970s, Bob James played a major role in turning fusion jazz more mainstream. "Angela", the instrumental theme from the 1970s television sitcom "Taxi", is probably Bob James' most well-known work to date. It was featured on "Touchdown", a 1978 jazz album which was a commercial breakout album for him. The song was named after the guest character in the third episode of the first season ("Blind Date"), but after hearing the song, the producers made this the show's main theme, replacing their previous choice, which became this album's title track. The title of the album is a reference to it being his sixth solo album, a touchdown being worth six points in American football. In addition to his solo work and high-profile collaborations with artists such as Earl Klugh and David Sanborn, James is also the founding member of contemporary jazz supergroup Fourplay. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured soloists who add a jazz touch to his sound (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.). While best known for his fusion sound, James began in 1962, recording a bop-ish trio set for Mercury. Three years later, his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects. James is recognized as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz. His music has also had a profound effect on the history of hip-hop and pop music, having been sampled often. Two of James' songs -- "Nautilus" from 1974's "One" and "Take Me To The Mardi Gras" from 1975's "Two" -- are among the most sampled in hip-hop history, sampled in thirty-two and forty-three hip-hop recordings, respectively. James' music has been most famously sampled by Eric B. & Rakim, Run-D.M.C., Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, Missy Elliott, Will.i.am, Common, Wu-Tang Clan, Röyksopp, De La Soul, Warren G, André 3000, and N.W.A, among many others. The Chicago Bulls documentary The Last Dance on Netflix took the world by storm. Back in the 90s I used to get up in the middle of the night to watch Michael Jordan and the Bulls on TV, so The Last Dance had a very nostalgic effect on me. Especially at the end of EP1, when SIRIUS started playing for the Chicago Bulls intro / starting lineup celebration, all the memories came flooding back! I immediately stopped watching and rushed into my studio to record my own version of the iconic theme song!

SIRIUS was originally released as the instrumental intro song on the album Eye in the Sky by The Alan Parsons Project. It was adopted by the Chicago Bulls as their theme song that played during the starting lineup player introductions and became a worldwide phenomenon, frequently being played at all kinds of sports events.

The original SIRIUS is quite short, so it is often edited to create extended versions, like it was done for The Last Dance soundtrack. Since I re-recorded all parts for this guitar cover, I made my own extended version by arranging it with a slower buildup to the guitar solo. I also extended the solo by composing a new second half based on the original.

Sept. 9, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- There was a distinct feeling of history in the air when Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley took his place in our office with his band, and it wasn't just the legend behind his surname. For fifteen minutes, we were treated to the same socially relevant reggae that his father, legendary Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley, made popular when he put the genre on the international music map.

With eyes shut, Marley dug deep into the healing power of music with songs from his 2017 album Stony Hill. "So A Child May Follow" addresses the troubles youth confront around the globe and how to persevere to succeed. "Speak Life" sums up the message of his music and his turn behind the Tiny Desk: live a life that will enable us to survive life's slings and arrows with dignity and love. But what makes his music stand out on this session is the prominence of the acoustic guitar and piano in the arrangements, which makes the familiar sound somewhat new.

And let's address the elephant in the room: Damian's father cast a giant, magnificent shadow on the world and it can't be easy to follow in those footsteps as a songwriter and musician. "Jr. Gong" (after his father's nickname of "Tuff Gong") seems to be undaunted by that legacy and instead draws on it for inspiration and guidance. Not to mention there is more than a hint of his father's unmistakable singing voice that so often preached the same messages of self-identity and self-determination that his youngest son is now doing so successfully.
