Tyla - To Last (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
There’s a new genre coming out of South Africa, and Tyla is one of its most promising young talents. “Amapiano, it’s the sound right now,” she explained to us after gliding through her DSCVR performances, where she put the emerging blend of house, R&B, and African dance genres such as Kwaito in the spotlight. In Zulu dialects, Amapiano means “the pianos,” a reference to the lounge keys usually weaved into its dembow and four-to-the-floor rhythms. Tyla herself is a master of taking its glossiest elements and imbuing them with the sensuality of American R&B. “Getting Late,” her breakout debut, was all about making the most of a night’s final hours. Considering she designs her songs in the shower, it makes sense that a certain steaminess and nonchalance runs through recent bops “Been Thinking” and “Girl Next Door.” But like a rose garden, there’s thorns nestled between those Tyla’s delicate sonic petals and romantic aromas. “My first love was not my first heartbreak,” the Aaliyah and Rihanna disciple whispers in “To Last,” which she performed for us on DSCVR. Ouch. Clearly, she’s learned how to pack punches from her pop-R&B heroes. “Water” is a particularly fetching track. “It’s kind of a naughty song,” she confessed, before adding, “It’s a summer song.” What else is there to say: dive in, but don’t expect to cool off.

Today’s feature is a group from the 90s featuring Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, that became one of my favorites from the underground scene. Their music is highly respected in that space, and one listen to their latest “Rise Of The Black Moon” album, released in 2019 will help you understand why. Their lyrical skill as artist that’s been around 30+ years is still flawless in delivery, subject matter, and creative originality. Add to that, production from their longtime producer and DJ Evil Dee aged just as well, or even better since making the switch to more Lo-Fi instrumentation. Not too many of today’s era know about Black Moon, and even some from their era don’t remember how much potential and expectations to be the next to blow from New York they had in the 90s. Their first album is considered an underground classic. While it didn’t go platinum and create a ship this group could sail comfortably into mainstream household names, it did and does receive grand reviews from album critics and hip hop purest. An argument can be made that Black Moon is the best group from the early 90s that’s still together and still rapping in hip hop today, releasing some of their best work as time went on. Today’s feature is a group that played a huge role in dictating black American culture for groups, southern acts, the 2010s, and had a chance to be the face of the 2020s as far as the hip hop group, being the last of their kind with longevity, influence and success to back them. But that all ended mid 2022 when rumors started to spread that Offset was either being cut from or leaving the group because of an alleged affair with group member Quavo’s ex girlfriend. Fans Hoped Offset at some point would be welcomed back into the fold and the group continue to make hits, set the trend and influence Culture. Hopes that will never be fulfilled as of November 1st 2022, the coolest, arguably the best as far as rapper Takeoff was shot and killed at a bowling alley in Houston Texas. Video of the incident has been sailing all around the internet, showing Quavo, who was at the event, screaming in agony to have lost not only his group mate and counterpart to his future as a duo, but his actual nephew that been along with him for the ride since literally the beginning. Today's feature had a hot start and followed that up with more success. She went platinum with all 6 of her albums and looked to continue that success. Then she developed Graves Disease and couldn't put in the work need to keep her in position. For us back in 2002, missy was the Kendrick Lamars and Tyler the Creators creatively and how much she attempted to push the boundaries. She didn’t have to rely on selling her body just to have a flash in the pan hit song, or like some female rappers today that leave nothing to the imagination and still never get that one record. Some are welcomed and have success, some find it difficult to maneuver the course of L.A and soon leave with an understanding that they just weren’t built to play the game. Some even lose their lives either overzealous and ran into the wrong crowd. Today’s fallen city feature once had their own sound be the popular in rap but today seems to have lost its control and their sound. Of course Kendrick Lamar, who’ll probably end up one of the most successful rapper from there when it’s all said and done, is still carrying the torch for Los Angeles, but even then could Kendrick Lamar be placed somewhere else and his sound not change at all? What is the Los Angeles sound in 2022? L.A has made it where as a rapper you have to think is it even worth it before you travel there. Checkin in, murders and a scene seemingly ran by streets codes, ungoverned by whether you’re a street rapper or not. Today’s feature is an artist that really had the chance to be one of the biggest R&B artist of the last decade with as much talent he has and dedicated fanbase he’s built since 2013. It’s 2022 now, soon to be a full decade he’s been in the game and those same fans repeatedly have to ask “Where is Partynextdoor? In that span he’s released 3 albums, well spread out, with his last coming 2 years ago March 2020. He recently popped up online, but not with new music, but in a shock video a fan posted showing Party looking a lot different than he did the last time he came out of his shell and made the news. No pun intended but he looks anything but recognizable and some fans even fear he may not be in a healthy space, meaning there’s no telling when a fresh new album will drop or at least some kind of project put together that’ll make the wait his fans have endured worth it. Those same fans have seemed to have this issue with PND since the beginning of time though, where he’s always been slow to release and out of the eye of the camera. Back in the late 2000s Young Money had a roster that seemed indestructible at the time. Starting off they had 3 of the top rappers in the game Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj, who were either in their prime or in the honeymoon stage of a hall of fame career. Lil Wayne by the time young money released their first collective album in 2009 was the hottest rapper in the game, coming off dropping 2 classics in the Carter 1 and 2 2004 and 2005, and back with the 3 peat in 2008 that became his best selling album to date, one of the best selling hip hop albums in history and the peak of Lil Wayne’s career. Disable Planets were seen as a group at the forefront of an image Hip Hop was supposed to be. Cool like that was top 15 on Billboard, their album went gold and the group were still in a happy place. All things looked bright for the future of Hip Hop as long as we had groups like this creating. What I like most about Digable Planets were while they certainly had the opportunity to excel in a music industry that at some point began to illuminate and sort after how many albums did you sell or what could make them the most money, they stayed true to the art form of hip hop and didn’t compromise their creative journey just to be the highest selling artist. For them they were creators through music that respected the listeners and wanted to give us music lasting longer than a hit song of the summer or billboard topping single to propel their sales. In the end that thinking may have hurt them, as music did evolve, and a leading element of its evolvement was finding ways to best capitalize financially of the art being put out and only interested in artist willing to play the game. Digable Planets only release 2 albums together that were both received well critically, but shortly after the second album, they disbanded and hip hop was robbed of great music that could’ve lasted the rest of the 90s. Slick Rick is one of the coolest MCs in rap history, with a look and sound that if nothing else, makes him unique and interesting. He has numerous classic hip hop songs, a classic album, a style like none other. No one else had his cadence of almost talking on a record, making all his words clear, easy to understand and follow along with. His appearance with the eye patch, kept your attention, as you don’t see many people wearing them especially not a rapper and the story behind why he wears it all play in your head, presenting a character of sorts to attach to and feel just as cool as the music. Then of all things he was one of, if not the greatest story tellers in rap history along with Biggie, Nas, Tupac and maybe Scarface. But Slick’s way of storytelling was in a lane of its own entirely. Unlike anyone else I’ve seen, Rick managed to mix a few different styles all in one to tell a story, and it worked flawlessly. Slick Rick had a real shot at being the biggest rapper of his era, but these things ultimately held him from becoming that, even though he still had a great rap career. Today’s feature is undoubtably a hip hop legend, cultural icon, innovator, achieved cult like status and an influential rapper that spawned a movement behind his personality and music. Mac Dre was right on the cusp of becoming the next big rapper in the game, but sadly his life was cut short right before that got to happen. He was one of those people you can tell was born to do what they did. Every ounce of him was about his music and character he created that embodied having a good time, staying humble, bringing your friends up with you, and being a man of the people. His main goal as a person was to experience life outside the city he grew up in, and as a rapper, have fun with his music while sharing that experience with as many people as possible. His popularity indeed skyrocketed after his passing, as it does all rappers cut from glory too soon, but in the Bay and the West coast, Mac Dre’s music known and celebrated by just about everyone, except the Vallejo police. "Bleek could be one hit away his whole career, as long as I'm alive he's a millionaire" That line by Jayz in the Diamonds from Sierra Leon remix told me everything I needed to know about what happened to Bleek's career. The biggest takeaway was that Jayz was already coming to terms with Bleek never amounting to what he was set out to be early on. As an artist, Bleek wasn't bad at all. He had a unique sounding rap voice and all the opportunity in the world being attached to Jay since a young age. Lamont Coleman was born in Harlem USA, where he spent his entire brief life. The youngest of 3 boys that were brought up by a single mother in the 80s and 90s. It was a constant struggle balancing the temptations of the streets of New York in those times and the passion for rapping he’d fall in love with at 12 years old. He was given many nick names at the time, but the one he couldn’t stand was being called little L. Already the smallest in his group he didn’t want to be seen as that in the streets, so he went with Big L and the name became legendary. He Got caught up one too many times in the streets and it ended his promising life. By all accounts he was supposed to have been one of the biggest rappers of his generation and heir to the throne of New York MCs when Biggie Smalls Died. He introduced Jay-z to the radio world and the streets chose him to contend. He had Nas in complete fear, shaking in his boots thinking how could he compete. By all accounts, Stack Bundles had what it took in those days to become a superstar. Some go as far as to say he could’ve been the next Biggie Smalls. They speak about his charisma, which was evident as soon as you watch anything he’s featured in. His chameleon esque look about him in that he could be the big bad bully in the movie if needed, he could play the fly gangster role, or the hood’s witty salesman that’s managed to sell just about everyone that’s listened to his music on a pipe dream that one day he was going to be the biggest in rap. Let him tell it, he started the wave. So what diabolically wavy story would I have to spin for you to understand what Max B meant and means to Hip Hop culture. One of a witty, charismatic personality, with ahead of his time approach to music, that just didn’t make it out soon enough. He had the talent, work ethic, and enough examples to finally take things serious and focus on the music, but you can’t escape your past and the people it was spent with. Also the story of how the lines between business and whatever else can cross and expose entire relationships. He made his mixtape debut in 2006 and later signed to Jim Jones’s spin off to Dip Set, Byrdgang. He’s had his hand in producing one of the biggest songs of the early 2000s hip hop with his contributions on Jones’s hit single “We Fly High” R.I.P Stack Bundles, who’s officially credited as the writer for the record. In 2009 Max B was sentenced to 75 years in prison for conspiracy in an arm robbery case turned Homicide. Although he was not present, he was handed a mastermind role, which was confirmed by ex girlfriend, who testified against him in court in exchange for a reduced plea. After his incarceration, his stardom grew to a cult like level, with fans new and old riding his biggest wave to date. Free Max B campaigns everywhere and the word wavy added to the hip hop adjective Hall Of Fame along with classics, like Dope, Banger, and Boughie.
