The first law of soca music, according to Machel Montano, is: "it's dancing time all the time." And in his Tiny Desk Concert, the "King of Soca" provides irrefutable evidence to support that statement.

Montano's performance is the first to bring soca, the high energy dance music of the Caribbean, to the Tiny Desk. The genre was born in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s when calypso artist Lord Shorty (who later chose the name Ras Shorty I) added traditional Indian percussion instruments and rhythms to calypso music — itself a fusion that incorporates elements of African, Venezuelan, French and American music.

A proud Trinidadian, Montano's contribution to soca has earned him awards and recognition since his youth. His career began in earnest when he was 7 years old, and by the time he was 10, he'd shared the stage with Calypsonian pioneers and icons, most notably performing at Madison Square Garden with Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener and The Mighty Shadow.

Indeed, Montano's Tiny Desk Concert was representative of his 40-plus-year career and, to the delight of those in attendance, included some of his biggest hits: "One More Time," "Famalay," "Like Ah Boss" and "Soca Kingdom."

Guests who attended Montano's performance came ready to fête! They jumped, they wined and they waved the flags of their respective Caribbean islands up high, singing along word for word. Being a Barbados-born, Saint Lucian-bred gyal, seeing and feeling the spirit of unity inherent to the cultural sound ingrained in my DNA — and foundational to my upbringing — represented at Tiny Desk made me beam with pride. If this is your first exposure to soca music, I suggest you stretch and loosen up your waistline before pushing play on this one, because there is no sitting still when soca fills the room.

There is no greater day each year at the Tiny Desk, for this music nerd, than when we host young musicians from the organization called From the Top. Through its 25 years of radio broadcasts, digital content and fellowships, FTT is a robust platform that showcases and supports young musicians around the country. And the three teenaged artists they’ve gathered here will renew your faith in the future of music.

Thirteen-year-old Cameron Renshaw, from Byron Center, Mich., is a born entertainer. “I really pour my heart out whenever I play,” he told Ellen DeGeneres when he appeared on her program at age 9. He was so exuberant he probably could have hosted the show himself. For us he plays a tricky piece on a single string of his cello by the 19th century violin hotshot Nicolò Paganini. The calm smiles on Renshaw’s face belie the difficulty of the music as he fingers wispy harmonics and leans into serious shredding.

Violinist Laura Jin, a 12-year-old wunderkind attending the pre-college program at Juilliard, might be soft spoken, even shy, but she thrives on danger. Which is why she’s playing Wieniawski’s flamboyant Polonaise Op. 4. “I really enjoy this piece because it has many technical difficulties,” she explains before launching into a thicket of double stops, pizzicato and harmonics, offering a sterling tone and preserving the splendor and swagger of the piece.

Rhyuhn Green, a sartorially resplendent 18-year-old from Philadelphia, lives a double life as both an extraordinary pianist and a composer fielding commissions. He’ll release his debut album this month. He wrote the Impromptu “Symbiosis” at age 9 and it has evolved ever since, with its wealth of hummable tunes, romantic flourishes a la Chopin and a billowing, passionate crescendo.

In the end, our Tiny Desk crew — along with an audience of doting parents and From the Top staffers — all knew that something important and kind of miraculous had taken place. Together, we created a document for the world to witness the powerful message of great music made by the next generation of very fine musicians.

The Red Clay Strays is a big band with a future that keeps expanding. In the past few years the Mobile, Ala.-born five-piece has rocketed from club gigs to major stages like Colorado's Red Rocks and Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on the strength of its joyful interplay and soaring Southern rock sound. It wasn't a given that the Strays could rein in the grandeur that its fanbase relishes to fit the modest Tiny Desk. But this easy rolling set shows what's made these longtime road dogs one of the fastest-rising ensembles in any genre right now: the ability to blend intimate and epic moments in a seamless and perfectly modulated performance.

Singer Brandon Coleman possesses serious magnetism and a unique, keening voice — looking eerily like Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, he shared stories of self-doubt and solace in a higher power while introducing favorites like "I'm Still Fine." But the Strays are a band, not just a set piece for a handsome frontman, and the interplay on chooglers like "Ramblin'" or ballads like "Wanna Be Loved" will have viewers returning to this set. It's just so fun to watch keyboardist Sevans Henderson trade riffs with bottleneck guitarist Zach Rishel, or track how drummer John Hall adjusts his mighty power to the Desk's confines. And the Strays keep things inventive, always. "Changed that one up completely — it was scary," guitarist and songwriter Drew Nix laughed after the band's swinging new take on its hit ballad "Wanna Be Loved." No need for fear — the Red Clay Strays continue to prove they're up to any challenge.
