Big Daddy Kane — hip-hop pioneer, Grammy-winning MC, and one of Brooklyn’s finest — sits down with Shannon Sharpe at Club Shay Shay for an in-depth conversation on his 40-year journey in the culture, from early block parties to influencing some of the biggest artists of all time.

Kane opens up about his roots in Brooklyn, discovering hip-hop through legends like DJ Kool Herc, Melle Mel, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash, and finding his voice in the early 1980s. He recalls hearing kids rhyme on the block, crafting his first slick lines from hustler slang, and eventually linking with Biz Markie, the man who gave him his first big break. Luiza Brina has emerged as a tender and idiosyncratic voice of Brazil, with transcendental music as quiet as it is cosmic. At the Tiny Desk, she presents a searching set of orações that serve as meditations, no matter your spiritual journey.

A little over a decade ago, Brina suffered panic attacks and, as a way to re-center herself, began to write a series of prayers despite not having any religious background. Prayers for comings and goings, hopes and dreams, a world falling apart. This practice formed the basis of Prece, one of NPR Music's best albums of 2024, where psychedelic symphonies commune with the sacred. That she comes from the southeastern state of Minas Gerais — home to Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges — speaks to the lineage of soul seekers that she inherits. Inspired by Música popular brasileira and artists from the late '60s tropicália movement, Brina experiments with folk and pop traditions, layering electronics with orchestral maneuvers.

For this performance, Brina is front and center with her seven-string nylon guitar and effects pedals, accompanied by woodwinds, keys, electronics and percussion that honors her Brazilian heritage. The arrangements, scaled down to a chamber ensemble, are still just as complex and whimsical. But it's her voice — bright and curious, steady and pure — that guides these orações, leaving us with this wisdom: "Do not distinguish God from happiness."

Imagine the burden of not only being a well known and respected musician but also an indelible icon of your country's folk tradition. That is the mantle that Carlos Vives carries for his native Colombia. During his turn behind the Tiny Desk, he takes on the role with a deep sense of pride and musical mastery.

In 1995, Vives released La Tierra del Olvido, a landmark recording that introduced the world to Colombia's vallenato style. Thirty years later, this performance revisits some of those songs with a 12-piece band that barely fits in our space. The instrumentation of this band — featuring several members who have been with Vives for decades — reflects the influence of Europe (accordions), Africa (alegre drums) and Indigenous cultures (gaita). There's history in this music, all of which gets equal space during the fiery opener "La Cachucha Bacana" — there's even an electric guitar solo! Even when the music slows down, the deep-seated groove is impossible to resist.
