Karyn White On Growing Up In LA, LA Reid, Babyface, Terry Lewis, Real Estate Success, and New Movies Hotney 10

Karyn White's self-titled debut album Karyn White was released in 1988. It was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface and achieved platinum status in the U.S.. The album contained the Hot 100 hit singles "The Way You Love Me", "Secret Rendezvous", and "Superwoman" as well as the No. 1 R&B hit "Love Saw It", a duet with Babyface himself. White was nominated in the Best R&B/Urban Contemporary New Artist category for the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards, which was won by Al B. Sure! She also received nominations for two Grammy Awards. She became the first female artist to have the first three solo releases from their debut album hit No. 1 on the R&B charts.

Her follow-up album was Ritual of Love in 1991. It had songs produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and featured the hit single "Romantic", which hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Other singles from the album include "The Way I Feel About You" (U.S. #12), "Walkin' the Dog", and "Do Unto Me" (the last two did not chart). The photographer and director Matthew Rolston directed the video for the hit single "Romantic". Michael Walls, who was credited as stylist on Ritual of Love, worked with White on the look for the Ritual of Love album sleeve, and three of the music videos released for the album. Walls had the idea for the Chanel-inspired pearls and black dress used on the album cover, the French maid look and multiple wardrobe changes for video of "The Way I Feel About You", and the "Walkin' the Dog" video, which was based on a scene from the film Sweet Charity.

Her next album was Make Him Do Right in 1994. The album did not sell well, although she did chart with the singles "Hungah" and the Babyface-penned "Can I Stay With You", which became her final U.S. R&B Top 10 hit in early 1995. "I'd Rather Be Alone", her last chart single to date, peaked at No. 50 on the same chart later that year. In 1995, White appeared with Mary J. Blige, Monica and others for the single "Freedom (Theme from Panther)" for the soundtrack to the Melvin Van Peebles film of the same name.

White left Warner Bros. Records in 1999, and dropped out of the music public eye for many years to start a family.

In 2006, she recorded a new album, titled Sista Sista; which was slated for release in 2006, but was shelved. Two tracks, "All I Do" and "Disconnected", were later released on the best of compilation album, Superwoman: The Best of Karyn White. She was also slated to appear on the Soul Train Music Awards in 2009 as a tribute to Babyface Edmonds. However, this performance was canceled when Edmonds and Reid withdrew from the Soul Train ceremony, declining the honor. In 2011, she was slated to have shot a pilot for a reality series with R&B singers Shanice and Debelah Morgan.

White released her first album after a seventeen-year break, Carpe Diem, in March 2012. The album featured the singles "Sista, Sista" and "Unbreakable," both of which received music videos.

She earned a 2017 UB Honors nomination for the Gale and the Storm soundtrack in the "Best Independent R&B Album Release" category.

Lyrics:
Look for the light if you're lost in the night
I'll write your name on my door
If you ever need warmth and comfort
Darlin', I'll be here to hold you near

I heard your name
'Cause you'll be my security

Love is a house, you got the key
(Oh, to take me where I wanna be)
Open up and let me into your heart (Ooh), baby
(Just look and you'll see)
(Love is a house and you got the key)
Open up and let me into your heart, baby

Look in my eyes, there'll be no surprise
You'll find the window to love
And I'll do anything in my power
To welcome you and please you too

But deep in my heart (Deep in my heart)
I know you're the one for me

Love is a house, you got the key
(Oh, to take me where I wanna be)
Open up and let me into your heart (Ooh, yeah), baby
(Just look and you'll see)
(Love is a house, you got the key)
Open up and let me into your heart (Oh, oh), baby

Love's a house, love's a home, I don't wanna be alone (No)
In your arms (Ooh), I'm happy to be
Open up, let me in (Let me in), I'm hungry for your love again
You got the key (Ooh), give it to me (Yeah)

When the night meets the morning

I'll hear you calling my name (TC)
And baby, you know if I answer
Things will never be the same (Never be the same)

But deep in my heart
I know that you're the number one for me

Love is a house, you got the key
(Woo, baby, take me where I wanna be)
Open up and let me into your heart (Ooh), baby
(Just look and you'll see)
(That you got the key)
Open up and let me into your heart (Ooh)

Love is a house, you got the key
(Love is a house, love's a home, I don't wanna be alone)
Open up and let me (Oh) into your heart (Open up), baby
(Open up, let me in, I'm hungry for your love again)
Open up and let me into your heart (Oh, darlin')

Yung Gleesh, Washington, D.C., is a trailblazing rapper whose raw sound and authentic storytelling helped shape the DMV’s underground rap movement. Rising to prominence with his breakout mixtapes Cleansides Finest and Your Favorite Rapper’s Favorite Rapper, Gleesh carved out a cult following through his gritty lyrics, unique voice, and unfiltered portrayal of D.C. street life. Known for his viral hit “Whippin’ the Yay” and collaborations with major artists like A$AP Mob, Playboi Carti, and Chief Keef, Gleesh became one of the first DMV artists to gain national attention during the SoundCloud era.

His influence continues to echo in the city’s new wave of rap, cementing him as a pioneer who gave D.C. hip-hop a global spotlight. With millions of streams, memorable performances, and a lasting reputation as one of the DMV’s most original voices, Yung Gleesh remains a cultural figure whose music captures the raw spirit of Washington, D.C.

In this Situations With Moon deep dive, Yung Gleesh shares his authentic story — from being raised in DC by his grandmother to finding his way in Go-Go with T.O.B. before transitioning into rap.

He reflects on the culture of DC’s streets, his early music influences, and how the city shaped his grind. Gleesh breaks down how he connected with legends like Gucci Mane, A$AP Rocky, Tyler, The Creator, and Playboi Carti, and the impact of the “Gleesh Walk” moment that took his career global.

He also opens up about the struggles of balancing family, music, and the streets, why he stepped away from the industry, and his powerful message of peace and positivity for today’s youth. This interview captures the roots, lessons, and legacy of a DC artist who lived it, influenced it, and now wants to inspire change

(Om Hrum Jum Sah) -
(Om Namah Shivaya Shivaya Nama Om) -
(Chitananda Roopam Shivoham Shivoham) -

English translation:
We worship Lord Shiva the three-eyed one, the one who is the master ofall senses and qualities and the one who is the sustainer ofall growth. May he release us from the bondage ofdeath, just as a ripened cucumber is released from its stalk, and may he grant us immortality.
Pure white like camphor, an incarnation of compassion, the essence worldly existence, whose garland is the king ofserpents, always dwelling inside the lotus of the heart. I bow to Shiva and Shakti together:
Oh Lord, salutations to you Oh Lord of the Universe, Greatest of them all He who has three eyes, he who gives enlightenment which is beyond three worlds He who like fire, devours all three times (Past, Present, Future) within himself Like Time, he who ends everything, Vast like the blue sky, Over-powerer ofdeath Lord ofall Beings, Conscousness which is untouched by the world yet everything in the world is because of him. Oh great Lord, salutations to you.
(Om Hrum Jum Sah) - The Mantra that conquers death
(Om Namah Shivaya Shivaya Nama Om) - We worship Lord Shiva
(Chitananda Roopam Shivoham Shivoham) - Shiva is eternal bliss
I bow before that Lingam, which is the eternal Lord Shiva, which is worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu and other Devas, which is pure and resplendent and which destroys sorrows of birth.
