Clark Terry (Saint Louis (Missouri), 14 december 1920 – Pine Bluff(Arkansas), 21 februari 2015) was an American swing-and bop trumpeter and a bugel-pionier in the jazz. He played in the bigbands of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and also had his own bands.
This composition was performed by Clark Terry & his Big Band at the North Sea Jazz Festival, 15 July 1979, the Hague, The Netherlands.

Benjamin David (Benny) Goodman, with the nickname The King of Swing (Chicago, 30 mei 1909 - New York City, 13 juni 1986) was a well known American jazz clarinetist and bandleader.

Goodman's bands launched the careers of many major jazz artists. During an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first well-known integrated jazz groups.

'Walk On The Water' as performed by Gerry Mulligan at this North Sea Jazz Festival performance, is from his 1980 album 'Walk on the Water' In 1982, the album received the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.

American jazz baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and his Big Band performed this composition at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Prins Willem Alexanderzaal of the Congresgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands on July 16th, 1982.

Gerry Mulligan was one of the leading arrangers in the era of cool jazz working with Miles Davis, Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Mulligan’s quartet of the early 50’s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups.
Born in New York in 1927, Mulliagan spend his life composing, arranging and playing jazz untill his untimely death on January 20, 1996.

'Jam' performed by James Brown and his band, that he did during his 2nd performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1981, held in the Congress center in The Hague.

This second concert is extraordinary and sees a James Brown that really gives everything to get the audience to their feet. The first concert that we published on 5 October 2017 which was recorded by AVRO Television earlier that 11th July 1981 saw a lame audience that did not know how to react. In this fantastic video we see what James Brown could do with any audience. Also this concert has a different tracklisting including a sensational 'It's A Man's World' in which he pays tribute to great artists who died such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and especially to John Lennon, who died some 6 months earlier.
The concert's encore is a raving rendition of 'Sex Machine'.

Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and composer. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". He was often referred to as "The Genius". Charles was blind from the age of seven.
He played several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival. This is the second concert that day in 1980.

Today’s feature back in 2008 burned like a comet falling to earth. Hot when he started, was at the top of the game at one point, but nevertheless only lasted a short time until his flame crashed and he was never heard from again. Ron Browz jumped on a wave back in the late 2000s as a joke and became ultra popular for it. He was making club hit after club hit back then, even if the songs were some of the most annoying songs you ever heard. I’m of the belief D.O.A may have even been directed at Ron browz mainly, as he was the only one at the time overusing it to the point his vocal were distorted throughout the entire track, as he simply screamed whatever he thought black people liked. Ron Browz I’ll give it to him, was able to capture that feeling and turn it into hits that set his career off and took him from the guy that made the beat for the best diss song in rap history to an actual music artist, signed to one of the biggest labels in hip hop. Dorothy Donegan (April 6, 1922 – May 19, 1998) was an American classically trained jazz pianist primarily known for performing
in the stride piano and boogie-woogie style. She also played bop, swing jazz, and classical music. Obituaries for her argued that
her flamboyant personality, tendency to mix unrelated genres in the same concert, and willingness to do lounge music may have
caused her to be undervalued in jazz circles.

Donegan was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois and began studying classical piano at age six. In her early years, she
studied at the Chicago Musical College and by age eight her potential was recognized. In the 1940s she became Art Tatum's
protégée and in 1942 she made her recording debut. She appeared in Sensations of 1945 with Cab Calloway, Gene Rodgers
and W. C. Fields and was known for her work in Chicago nightclubs. She began a trio in 1945, but then returned to solo work. She expressed some interest in returning to classical music after this.

Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuosic technique, power, groove, and speed.
Rich was born in Manhattan, New York, to Jewish vaudevillians Bess (Skolnik) and Robert Rich.:6 His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at the age of one. He began playing drums in vaudeville when he was 18 months old, billed as "Traps the Drum Wonder." At the peak of Rich's childhood career, he was reportedly the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world (after Jackie Coogan). At 11 he was performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction, and went so far as to claim that instruction would only degrade his musical
talent. He also never admitted to practicing, claiming to play the drums only during performances and was not known to read music. He expressed great admiration for, and was influenced by, the playing of Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Dave Tough, and Jo
Jones, among others.

Rich first played jazz w ith a major group in 1937 with Joe Marsala and guitarist Jack Lemaire. He then played with Bunny Berigan (1938) and Artie Shaw (1939), and even instructed a 14-year-old Mel Brooks in drumming for a short period when
playing for Shaw. At 21, Rich participated in his first major recording with the Vic Schoen Orchestra (the band that backed the Andrews Sisters).In 1938, he was also hired to play in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra where he met and performed with Frank Sinatra. In 1942, Rich left the Dorsey band to join the United States Marine Corps. He rejoined the Dorsey group after leaving the Marines two years later. In 1946, Rich formed his own band with financial support from Sinatra, and continued to lead different groups on and off until the early fifties.

The Buddy Rich Big Band in the 1940s In addition to Tommy Dorsey (1939–42, 1945, 1954–55), Rich also played with Benny Carter (1942), Harry James (1953-56–62, 1964, 1965), Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, and Jazz at the Philharmonic, as well as leading his own band and performing with all-star groups. In the early fifties Rich played with Dorsey and began to perform with trumpeter Harry James, an association which lasted until 1966. In 1966, Rich left James to develop a new big band. For most of the period from 1966 until his death, he led successful big bands in an era when the popularity of big bands had waned from their 1930s and 1940s peak. In this later period, Rich continued to play clubs and stated in multiple interviews that the great majority of his big band's performances were at high schools, colleges and universities, with club performances done to a much lesser degree. Rich also served as the session drummer for many recordings, where his playing was often much more understated than in his own big-band performances. Especially notable were Rich's sessions for the late-career comeback recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, on which he worked with pianist Oscar Peterson and his famous trio featuring bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis.

Stan Getz (born Stanley Gayetski; February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as "one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists"
Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he popularized bossa nova in America with the hit single "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964).

At the North Sea Jazz Festival Stan Getz played with four young musicians. The Line-up of his Quintet is:

Wayne Shorter (born August 25, 1933) is an American jazz saxophonist and composer. He became known as member and composer of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and later went on to join Miles Davis in his Second Great Quintet in the 1960’s.
Later he founded Weather Report. He won 10 Grammy awards and recorded more than 20 albums.

'Birdland' is part of the full live concert that American jazz vocal group The Manhattan Transfer performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, the Netherlands on 11 July 1987.

With their unique blend of voices, the sublime Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne, Alan Paul and Tim Hauser bring the audience to
their feet in the The Haque Congress Building at the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz Festival 1987.
The concert features many of their well known songs of the nine albums they had released untill 1987. They did songs from
‘Vocalese’, their most recent album at the time, as well as favourites from their earlier albums.
The Manhattan Transfer is an American vocal music group. There have been two manifestations of the group, with Tim Hauser
being the only person to be part of both. The group's name comes from John Dos Passos' 1925 novel Manhattan Transfer and
refers to their New York origins.

Arguably the greatest drummer of all time, the legendary Buddy Rich exhibited his love for music through a dedication of his life to the art. His career spanned seven decades, beginning when Rich was 18 months old and continuing until his death in 1987. Immensively gifted, Rich could play with remarkable speed and dexterity despite the fact that he never received a formal lesson and refused to practise outside his performances. In this 1978 concert, with maybe his best band ever, he shows how unique he is as a performer and bandleader. "I wanna introduce you guys to the baddest bitch," Trina told the audience of her Tiny Desk. "The original baddest bitch." It's a title no one but the hip-hop icon herself could been able to claim at the Tiny Desk — and for good reason.

As a rapper, Trina has been pushing P since before her successors were even sitting up in Pampers and her wild ride of a Tiny Desk concert, 25 years after making her rap debut, only further proves why she is the blueprint.

Decked out in leather, diamonds and a wavy jet-black bussdown, the vet got comfortable behind the Desk quickly, ready to give fans the best of her sprawling discography. Trina temporarily fought back tears as she recited "Mama," a dedication to her late mother who died of cancer in 2019. The crew made the breakup anthem "Here We Go" feel even more aching. The energy in the space made a seismic shift when the band took on the bass-bumpin' classic "Da Baddest Bitch," infusing the live arrangement with nimble guitar, charismatic drums and background vocalists so entertaining, their delivery felt like epic narration from the chorus of an ancient Greek play or, just as epically, a group homegirls hyping up their friend at the function. In the middle of it all was the 305 Queen herself, killing her verses with breath control, authority and bougie hair flips.

"I believe in who I am. The game didn't make me; I made the game. I made it," the Diamond Princess declared in her Louder Than A Riot interview before recording this Tiny Desk concert. "I already came in with a motive and an initiative to know who I am from. That's why I breed a whole universe of bad bitches."
