Sandbox Percussion: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 6 Streams • 2 years ago

Tom Huizenga | March 28, 2025
We had to get an early start to figure out how to ergonomically squeeze all of Sandbox Percussion’s instruments behind the Tiny Desk.

The band deploys a surprisingly wide arsenal. The professionally-built instruments, like the bass drum and vibraphone, took up most of the Tiny Desk real estate. The smaller, unexpected instruments needed to be placed just right for easy access. There were metal plumbing pipes and wooden slats you can find at the hardware store, ordinary wine glasses from your kitchen, an old cigar box and an empty bourbon bottle.

The members of Sandbox Percussion have a longstanding relationship with composer Andy Akiho. They begin this set with a segment of Seven Pillars, an 80-minute piece Akiho wrote for the group, which was a 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist. It’s a supercharged, edge-of-the-seat performance where the sounds delight, the polyrhythms intertwine and mallets fly in a blur.

Then come the wine glasses. Remember, as a kid, how you annoyed your family by running your finger around the rim of a water glass at the dinner table? The Sandbox guys take this to an exquisite level in music by Viet Cuong. The glasses, tuned with varying levels of water, toll woozily, as if bells could get drunk. Later, they “sing” with otherworldly overtones, sounding better than any synthesizer.

As a bonus, Sandbox invites Akiho himself to join on steel drum for the mesmerizing final piece –- Akiho’s own Karakurenai, where interlocking beats groove like gamelan music, and delicious sounds emanate from bowed rice bowls, pipes and slabs of wood.

In the end, it was worth unloading all those amazing instruments to document one of today’s finest — and friendliest — percussion ensembles.

Viet Cuong: Water, Wine, Brandy, Brine
Akiho: Karakurenai

Lyrics:
Every time you come around you know I can’t say no
Every time the sun goes down I let you take control
I can feel the paradise before my world implodes
and tonight had something wonderful

My bad habits lead to late nights ending alone
Conversations with a stranger I barely know
Swearing this will be the last, but it probably won’t
I’ve got nothing left to lose, or use, or do
My bad habits lead to wide eyes stare into space
And I know I lose control of the things that I say
I was looking for a way out, now I can’t escape
Nothing happens after two
It’s true it’s true
My bad habits lead to you

Every pure intention ends when the good times start
Falling over everything to reach the first times spark
Started under neon lights then it all got dark
I only know how to go too far

My bad habits lead to late nights ending alone
Conversations with a stranger I barely know
Swearing this will be the last, but it probably won’t
I’ve got nothing left to lose, or use, or do
My bad habits lead to wide eyes stare into space
And I know I lose control of the things that I say
I was looking for a way out, now I can’t escape
Nothing happens after two
It’s true it’s true
My bad habits lead to you

We took the long way round
And burned til the fun ran out, now

My bad habits lead to late nights ending alone
Conversations with a stranger I barely know
Swearing this will be the last, but it probably won’t
I’ve got nothing left to lose, or use, or do
My bad habits lead to wide eyes stare into space
And I know I lose control of the things that I say
I was looking for a way out, now I can’t escape
Nothing happens after two
It’s true it’s true
My bad habits lead to you

Lyrics:

I know it’s a bad idea
But how can I help myself
Been inside for most this year
And I thought a few drinks they might help

It’s been a while my dear
Dealing with the cards life dealt
I’m still holding back these tears
While my friends are somewhere else

I pictured this year a little bit different when it hit February
I step in the bar, it hit me so hard
Oh how can it be this heavy?
Every song reminds me you’re gone
And I feel the lump form in my throat
‘Coz I’m here alone

Just dancing with my eyes closed
‘Coz everywhere I look I still see you
Time is moving so slow
And I don’t know what else that I can do
So I’ll keep dancing with my eyes closed
So I’ll keep dancing with my

Delusion is here again
And I think you’ll come home soon
A word brings me right back in
Then it’s only me that’s in this room
I guess I could just pretend
The colours are more than blue
But I lost more than my friend
I can’t help but missing you

I pictured this month a little bit different no one is ever ready
And when it unfolds you get in a hole
Oh how can it be this heavy?
Everything changes, nothing’s the same
Except the truth is now you’re gone
And life just goes on

So I’m dancing with my eyes closed
‘Coz everywhere I look I still see you
Time is moving so slow
And I don’t know what else that I can do
So I’ll keep dancing with my eyes closed
So I’ll keep dancing with my eyes closed
Oh I’ll keep dancing with my

They’re shutting the bar
They’re cleaning the floor
And everyone is already home
But I’m on my own

Still dancing with my eyes closed
‘Coz everywhere I look I still see you
Time is moving so slow
And I don’t know what else that I can do
So I’ll keep dancing with my eyes closed
Oh I’ll keep dancing with my eyes closed
Oh I’ll keep dancing with my

Lyrics:
A two tonne weight around my chest feels like
It just dropped a twenty storey height
If there was anyone to ever get through this life
With their heart still intact, they didn’t do it right

The last time I felt your weight on my chest you said
'We didn't get it right but love we did our best'
And we will again,
Moving on in time and taking more from
Everything that ends

And all things end
All that we intend is scrawled in sand
or slips right through our hands
And just knowing that everything will end
Should not change our plans when we begin again
We begin again

I have never known a silence
Like the one fallen here
Never watched my future darken in a single tear
I know we want this to go easy by being somebody's fault
But we’ve gone long enough to know this isn’t what we want
And that isn’t always bad
When people say that something is forever
Either way it ends

And all things end
All that we intend is scrawled in sand
or slips right through our hands
And just knowing
That everything will end
Should not change our plans
When we begin again

We begin again
we begin again
We begin again

And all things end
(Knowing we can always start again)
All that we intend
(Knowing we can have another day)
is scrawled in sand
(Knowing we can always start again)
or slips right through our hands
(Knowing we can have another day)
And just knowing
That everything will end
Should not change our plans
When we begin again

Lyrics:
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake

I’m wide awake
Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
I’m wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong

I’m wide awake
And now it’s clear to me
That everything you see
Ain’t always what it seems
I’m wide awake
Yeah, I was dreamin’ for so long

(Pre-Chorus)
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn’t dive in
Wouldn’t bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
‘Til I woke up on
On the concrete

(Chorus)
Fallin’ from cloud 9
Crashin’ from the high
I’m lettin’ go tonight
Yeah I’m fallin’ from cloud 9
I’m wide awake
Not losing any sleep
I picked up every piece
And landed on my feet
I’m wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself, no

I’m wide awake
Yeah, I am born again
Out of the lion’s den
I don’t have to pretend
And it’s too late
The story’s over now, the end

(Pre-Chorus)
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn’t dive in
Wouldn’t bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
‘Til I woke up on
On the concrete

(Chorus)
Fallin’ from cloud 9
(It was outta the blue, I’m)
Crashin’ from the high
I’m lettin’ go tonight
(Yeah, I’m lettin’ you go, I’m)
I’m fallin’ from cloud 9

(Bridge)
I’m wide awake
Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling
I’m wide awake
I am trying to hold on
I’m wide awake
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side
I’m wide awake
I’m not blind anymore
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake

(Chorus)
Yeah I’m fallin’ from cloud 9
(It was outta the blue, I’m)
Crashin’ from the high
You know I’m letting go tonight
(Yeah, I’m lettin’ you go, I’m)
I’m fallin’ from cloud 9
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake

Ey

A mí no me importa nadie, solo tú y yo
No hace falta na', mamita, yo traje de to'

Te quiero a ti, mami, na' má'

Te quiero a ti, mami, na' má'

Dobla, mija, que tú no come' varilla

Te quiero a ti, mami, na' má'

Te quiero a ti, mami, na' má'

"JOIN ME IN ARMAGEDDON" LYRICS

Join me
In armageddon
Join me
In armageddon

Bow your fucking heads
Anointing of the sick
Show me an arsenal of lies
You fucking terrorists

Dress warm for nuclear winter
In frozen graves where the bodies sleep
Black fangs of the pagan wolf
Feast upon the weary sheep

The weaponry is live
Another sanctioned hit
If man is sanctified
I am the heretic

All praise
The doomsday machine
All praise
The pendulums swing
Flesh falls from a fiery heaven
Join me in armageddon

Feel the burn on the back of your neck
Smell the rotting stench of sulfurous flesh
Ninety seconds to midnight
Self destruction is set
Erase the parasites
Say your last rites

Last rites

Bow your fucking heads
Anointing of the sick
An arsenal of lies
You fucking terrorists

All praise
The doomsday machine
All praise
The pendulums swing
Flesh falls from a fiery heaven
Join me in armageddon

Join me in armageddon

All you hold sacred
Is taken
World termination

All we’ve created
World termination
All we hold sacred
World termination
All will be taken
World termination

All praise
The doomsday machine
All praise
The pendulums swing
Flesh falls from a fiery heaven
Join me in armageddon

Join me
In armageddon
Join me
