Lyrics
(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High
You know them Stakes Is High
When we talkin' 'bout the
(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High, you know them Stakes Is High
We be talkin bout the
(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High
You know them Stakes Is High

The instamatic focal point bringing damage to your borough
Be some brothers from the east with them beats that be thorough
Got the solar gravitation so I'm bound to pull it
I gets down like brothers are found ducking from bullets
Gun control means using both hands in my land
Where it's all about the cautious livin'
Migrating to a higher form of consequence, compliments
Of strugglin', that shouldn't be notable
Man every word I say should be a hip hop quotable

I'm sick of bitches shakin' asses
I'm sick of talkin' 'bout blunts, sick of Versace glasses
Sick of slang, sick of half-ass awards shows
Sick of name brand clothes
Sick of R&B bitches over bullshit tracks
Cocaine and crack, which brings sickness to blacks
Sick of swoll head rappers with their sicker than raps
Clappers of gats, makin' the whole sick world collapse
The facts are gettin' sick, even sicker perhaps
Stickabush to make a bundle to escape this synapse

Man, life can get all up in your ass, baby, you betta work it out
Let me tell you what it's all about
A skin not considered equal
A meteor has more right than my people
Who be wastin' time screaming who they've hated
That's why the Native Tongues has officially been re-instated

(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High
You know them Stakes Is High
When we talkin' 'bout the
(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High, y’all know them Stakes Is High
We we dealing with the
(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High
Man them Stakes Is High
(what about that love?)

Yo, it's about love of cars, love for funds
Loving to love mad sex, loving to love guns
Love for opposite, love for fame and wealth
Love for the fact of no longer loving yourself, kid
We living in them days of the man-made ways
Where every aspect is vivid
These brothers no longer talk shit
Hey yo, these niggas live it
'Bout to give it to you 24/7 on the microphone
Plug One translating the zone
No offense to a player, but yo, I don't play
And if you take offense, fuck it, got to be that way
J.D. Dove, show your love, what you got to say?

I say G's are making figures at a high regard
And niggas dying for it nowadays ain't odd
Investing in fantasies and not God
Welcome to reality, see times is hard
People try to snatch the credit, but can't claim the card
Showing out in videos, saying they co-starred
See, shit like that will make your mama cry
Better watch the way you spend it cause the

(Vibes, vibrations)
Stakes Is High
Man them Stakes Is High

I think that smiling in public is against the law (what?)
Cause love don't get you through life no more
It's who you know and "How you, son?"
And how you gettin' in, and who the man holding heat
Yo, and how was the skins and how high
Yo what up, huh? I heard you caught a body
Seem like every man and woman shared a life with John Gotti

But they ain't organized!

Mixing crimes with life enzymes
Taking the big scout route and niggas know doubt
Better than they know their daughters and their sons
(Oh boy)

Yo, people go through pain and still don't gain
Positive contact just like my main man
Who got others cleaning up his physical and fluids
His mind got congested
He got the nine and blew it
Neighborhoods are now hoods cause nobody's neighbors
Just animals surviving with that animal behavior
Under I. who be rhyming from dark to light sky
Experiments when needles and skin connect
No wonder where we live is called the projects
When them Stakes Is High you damn sure try to do
Anything to get the piece of the pie
Electrify, even die for the cash
But at last I be out even though you wantin' more
This issue is closed like an elevator door
But soon re-opened once we get to the next floor where the

Bonsu Thompson Reveals Biggie Threw Shots at LL Cool J on "Who Shot Ya?" Hotney 6 Streams • 3 years ago

In part 2 Bonsu Thompson Reveals Biggie Threw Shots at LL Cool J on "Who Shot Ya?"

Hip-hop has long been admired for its ability to draw listeners into a world that encompasses not only music, but the stories and experiences of those creating it. Few artists have managed to achieve the level of iconic status equivalent to the late Notorious B.I.G. - and his final album, Life After Death, left an undeniable impact on the genre. Recently, writer, producer, and Brooklynite Bonsu Thompson took on the task of further exploring the legacy of this album and its creator with his series, Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death. Hosted by Angie Martinez, Thompson's series delves into the stories behind this masterpiece, bringing together perspectives from those closest to Biggie during the final 18 months of his life.

With Bonsu Thompson's versatile background that extends from journalism to television production and digital media, it comes as no surprise that Iconic Records hits all the right spots. Delivering raw and introspective analysis on the landmark album, the series invites a host of guests to contribute their personal accounts of not only Christopher "Biggie" Wallace's artistic process but the ruthless New York rap scene that helped shape life on the East Coast during its golden era.

Over the course of the series, Angie Martinez spends five nights in conversation with some of the closest figures in Biggie's life, each sharing the untold stories that changed hip-hop forever. They recount the rise of the Notorious B.I.G., the East-West rivalry that nearly sparked conflicts, and the fallout following the rapper's tragic death, which only cemented his legacy.

What sets Iconic Records apart from other documentaries exploring hip-hop lore is Bonsu Thompson's strong influence. Behind the scenes, Thompson was hands-on and allowed guests to open up and speak honestly, providing listeners a rare glimpse into the life of hip-hop's biggest names. With a combination of knowledge and expertise, he was able to curate a series that caters to the educated fan wanting an in-depth look at the genre's evolution.

Moreover, the Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death series is more than just insights into Biggie's life. It also illuminates the unique perspectives of his peers, each giving voice to the trials and tribulations of the times. Thompson brings fresh insight into the iconic moments of the East Coast rap scene, resulting in an extraordinary behind-the-scenes portrayal of the music industry, which captures the momentous energy of a transformative moment in the genre.

Bonsu Thompson's incredibly detailed storytelling skills capture the essence of Biggie's Life After Death, highlighting his artistry and the East Coast rap scene at large. While there are several documentaries devoted to the rapper, Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death stands out in its ability to bring listeners into the world of Christopher Wallace, showcasing the brilliance of his work alongside the inspiration behind it. Thompson has created a platform for sharing history and culture, allowing listeners to learn something new about icons they thought they knew well. Take the time to listen to Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death on the Roku Channel, or any other platform, and immerse yourself in the world of Biggie.

Karol G: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 6 Streams • 3 years ago

Anamaria Sayre | May 15, 2023
Arriving at the Tiny Desk not long after becoming the first female artist to have a Spanish-language album top the Billboard 200 chart, Colombian singer Karol G shined brighter than ever. With an all-female crew backing her, the proud energia femenina and the prowess of a band dominated exclusively by women is undeniably brilliant here. It was also the first time in many years, she said, that she hadn't rehearsed without her typical on-stage equipment, like in-ear monitors. "I forgot how cool it feels," she said. Authenticity isn't a prescription for Karol G, it's a natural state — something that she carries with her, waiting for the next opportunity to reveal another version of Carolina.

"CAROLINA," her given name, was also the title of the opening track of her performance, as she got to jamming in a manner atypical for the superstar. Trading her flute and trumpet for an accordion and tuba she "bring[s] some Mexican vibe to this place," she said, with "GUCCI LOS PAÑOS." She paused between songs and offered a cheers to the room, admitting that she had meant to sip her Mezcalito before the previous song.

She emphasized the rawness of the moment by slowing things down for a stripped down, reggae-leaning version of "PERO TÚ." Sliding seamlessly into a bossa nova-esque "MERCURIO" — the version she wishes she'd included on the album — "La Bichota" brought the music back up and danced herself off stage. Away from the stadium lights, Karol G's performance wasn't just a blip of normalcy for the pop star — it was permission from the self-described "happy-heartbreak girl" to get up, whether in the streets of Medellín or an office in Washington, D.C., and dance with every version of yourself.
