Memphis Bleek on Jay-Z, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Biggie, Tupac, Dame Dash, Michael Jackson, Kevin Hart Hotney 8 Visualizzazioni • 1 anno fa

Memphis Bleek joins Shannon Sharpe at Club Shay Shay to perform a track from his new album Apartment 3D before diving into his journey from the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn to hip-hop history. Raised by a single mother and stepfather, Bleek recalls growing up watching his mom struggle and his determination to change his family dynamic. He thought basketball, baseball, or even art would be his path, until writing lyrics became his true calling. Growing up in the same building as Jay-Z, his first job was walking Jay’s nephews to school for $100 a week. He shares memories of the projects, losing friends, and respect for older generations who disciplined kids whether related or not.

Bleek reflects on idolizing Nino Brown before Jay-Z told him to quit hustling and focus on music. Though not blood brothers, he says Jay-Z raised him alongside Dame Dash, Biggs, Clark Kent, and cousin Bee High. He explains why Brooklyn breeds stars like The Notorious B.I.G., Lil’ Kim, Fabolous, Big Daddy Kane, ODB, Joey Bada$$, and Pop Smoke. He remembers meeting Biggie during the “Brooklyn’s Finest” session with Jay-Z and visiting Biggie’s New Jersey mansion with elevators and Land Cruisers, which inspired him to believe success through music was possible. He admits his pen was never as sharp as Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas, or Tupac, and recalls being devastated by Biggie’s death.

He describes Jay-Z’s life in the projects as “royalty” with an air conditioner, waterbed, and white carpet. His mother was best friends with Jay’s sister, and Bleek always knew Jay was destined for greatness. Watching Jay-Z evolve into a businessman, he says Hov has long planned to retire from rap and hasn’t felt challenged since Eminem, Big Pun, Biggie, and Tupac. Bleek recalls freestyling for Jay-Z during the Reasonable Doubt era, seeing Jay write “Sunshine” in 30 minutes, and realizing he was hand-picked. Reasonable Doubt changed Bleek’s life, giving him money to support his mom and allowing him to buy a house in New Jersey at 17.

Bleek credits Dame Dash with saving him from a bad management deal but explains why Jay-Z will never “save” Dame now. He calls Roc-A-Fella’s breakup the worst day of his life, caused by egos, lack of focus, and fights over credit. He names Roc-A-Fella the greatest rap label ever, with Cash Money, Death Row, No Limit, Ruff Ryders, and Def Jam rounding out his top five. He shares Kanye West memories, Rihanna’s early career, and calls Rihanna an anomaly. He talks about rap beefs from Tupac vs. Biggie to Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake, praising “Not Like Us” as the greatest diss record he’s ever seen.

Bleek recalls turning down beats like Joe Budden’s “Pump It Up,” Barbara Streisand quoting him in a diss to Donald Trump, and being starstruck by Michael Jackson. He performed for Nelson Mandela, worked with Destiny’s Child, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott, and says Beyoncé is the closest thing to Michael Jackson. He praises Kevin Hart as the funniest person he’s met, likening him to Eddie Murphy, and remembers hanging with Nick Cannon, Serena Williams, and Meagan Good.

Bleek agrees with Fat Joe that rappers live paycheck to paycheck and opens up about marriage, fatherhood, and why focusing on friendships hurt his career. He says Jay-Z always has his back but egos destroy empires. From Marcy Projects to Roc-A-Fella Records, Memphis Bleek’s story is one of loyalty, lessons, and legacy.

Turnstile: Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 4 Visualizzazioni • 1 anno fa

Lars Gotrich | September 10, 2025
An effortless hop from the carpet onto the office furniture. A split-second survey of the audience gathered. Two steps, then liftoff and barrel roll. Not only does Brendan Yates execute the first-ever stage dive — and ensuing crowd surf — at the Tiny Desk, but he does so with athletic grace. That's how this Turnstile concert ends, but not before a wild reimagination of the hardcore band's wide-ranging sound, featuring piano and a horn section.

Ever since its inception 15 years ago, Turnstile has always turned its accessible, yet esoteric influences into something of its own. The roots are hardcore punk's speed and volatility, but the itch to play with tonal, textural and rhythmic palettes has kept Baltimore's own restless. That Turnstile only performs tracks from NEVER ENOUGH here could be seen as a commitment to the glossy sheen of the year's biggest hardcore album, but that just turns out to be a ruse.

A midtempo rocker becomes a madcap piano brawler. A punk rager spins on a topsy-turvy ride, skanking along the way. Jangle-pop melancholia turns on a Motown dime, shimmying into a soul revue with the horns locked all the way in. The anthem emerges as a reflective ballad — and as a way for Yates to express his heartfelt gratitude toward the family, friends and "personal heroes" in the room. Just when you think you know Turnstile — its sound, motivation, vision — there's another metamorphosis.

Lyrics:
I am the one to give you life again
I am the one to save your soul, AMEN!

As the shadows they are forming come and join me centre stage

Oh what a happy land we live in

If you are empty and abstracted and your broken heart is full of rage

Oh what a happy land, oh yeah

In a world of fiction I am a velvet glove

Oh what a happy land we live in

I am your soul, your resurrection, I am the love

Oh what a happy land, oh yeah

So look out to the west now, see where the devil lies

Oh what a happy land we live in

It’s pharmakon is with you and your empire it is paralysed

Oh what a happy land, oh yeah

I’ll propagate eternity and seal it with my kiss

Oh what a happy land we live in

So look into the coffin and let me grant your wish

Oh what a happy land, oh yeah

No more bad news
So you can sleep well at night
And the palace of your mind will be bright

Everything is slowing down yet everything is faster

Oh what a happy land we live in

While everyone is consuming I’ll save you from yourself

Oh what a happy land, oh yeah

Upon this world of fiction my love I will bestow

Oh what a happy land we live in

And as we march into the future happiness will grow

No more bad news
So you can sleep well at night
And the palace of your mind will be bright

Everything is slowing down yet faster
Consuming us I’ll save you from yourself
My love bestowed upon this world of fiction
March to the future happiness grows
Are you not better off than ever
Are you not better off right now
When have you felt this way I ask you
When have you felt better off than right now

I am the one to give you life again
I am the one to save your soul, AMEN!

No more bad news………

(Mountains and rainbows , palaces of love)

So you can sleep well at night and palace of your mind will be bright

So you can sleep well at night and palace of your mind will be bright

LYRICS
Square up with me, I can take your right, throw a left,
Pair up with me, I’mma take you right to the chest,
Warpath etched in the surface,
Lines of the yellow tape, they’re moving quiet like a,
Serpentine in a formation,
Buddy, that's my team, pretty impatient,
Now they’re waiting on me,
It might be the furthest we’ve reached,
Now move it up, move it up, it's a breach.

I wonder where you are,
I wanted to you to show me,
The way around those city walls,
The way on through,
I wonder where you are,
I wanted you to show me,
But now the night has fallen,
Abandoned by the sun.

Square up with me, I can come to you, tell me when,
Pair up with me, I can run on you, in the end,
I write a promise in pencil but my loyalty’s in pen,
Use a mistake as a crooked stencil,
Then we trace it back again,
From the mainland to the island of violence,
It was the same plan for a while, decided,
To send me up and rip you out of your seat,
You see, in a city with no entrance there is not a retreat,
I’m wondering what you thought would happen,
Who you thought I would be,
Was this a side-swipe or did you picture this in a dream?
Buckle down, this is possibly the furthest we’ve reached,
Now move it up, move it up, it's a breach.

My smile wraps around my head splitting it in two,
I don’t have a clue how I can keep the top half glued.

Entertain my faith,
This is the last time that I try.
Address my soul,
Entertain my faith,
This is the last time that I try.

Lyrics:
I'm on some new shit, switch up the vibe
Forward, I'm moving, don't waste my time
I don't stand in no lines, you so stuck in yo' mind
When you gon' get it together?
You on some hood shit, and, yeah, that's cool, I don't care
Up and you're down, I'm still here, I put aside how I feel
'Cause I love you and I'm understanding
And I know that the life we both living is hard to manage

But if yo' ex think she can call yo' phone
You better tell her you love me, put no one above me
Say my name, say my name
Ain't finna play no games, it's time to make it plain
Boy, don't be acting strange

'Cause when I love, I love hard
And when I give, I give all, yeah
In yo' eyes I see stars, I feel safe in your arms
Want my trust, just work hard, yeah
And if she ever wanna talk, tell her you love me
And ain't no other girl above me
Yeah, that's petty, but you can't afford a loss
Crazy with my thoughts, lines to never cross
Tell her, tell her, tell her, tell her you love me

Awkward, I just don't wanna end up hurt
But we gotta have these conversations before this shit gets worse
I'm not finna play, she in the way
You better lay it down
There's nothing to talk about

But if yo' ex think she can call yo' phone
You better tell her you love me, put no one above me
Say my name, say my name
Boy, I am not a game, it's time to make it plain
Just don't be acting strange

'Cause when I love, I love hard
And when I give, I give all, yeah
In yo' eyes I see stars, I feel safe in your arms
Want my trust, just work hard, yeah
And if she ever wanna talk, tell her you love me
And ain't no other girl above me
Yeah, that's petty, but you can't afford a loss
Crazy with my thoughts, lines to never cross
Tell her, tell her, tell her, tell her you love me

Tell her how you always thinking of me
You ain't gotta answer any questions when she calls your phone
You need to tell her you with me, she should fall back
Go 'head and tell her you love me, these are all facts
And if she ever wanna talk
'Cause she can't help but to call
I know you care about my heart
It ain't even hard, tell her you love me
Tell her you love me

Ooh, okay and I love how you doin' it, take you down to H-Town and I'm screwin' it
Ooh, okay, and I'm lovin' your face, fuck you good and put you in your place

[Verse: Loe Shimmy]
Need my Perky, my thirties, a zombie fiendin'
And I'm way in the clouds when I'm codeine dreamin'
Give that pussy to me, don't be borin'
And I'm divin' inside 'til the morning
Bet' not run up on zombie, that switch is singin'
And I'm playin' in that pussy until she creamin'
I won't jump in that coupe, it ain't foreign
I sold out every show when I'm tourin'
I ain't givin' up (No, no)
See, I'm winnin' so bad, came from none to the top, we gon' live it up (We gon' live it up)
That's your man? Stop that talkin' and tweetin', and speakin', go pick him up (Baby, scrub the ground)
And that Lamb' go so fast, see the dash, when I drive, make it giddy up (When I'm 'round)
I turned down couple millions from Sony
Girl, I love how you ride like a pony
Keep that switch on my lap like I'm Tony
She get naughty for me when we lonely

[Chorus: Don Toliver & LOE Shimmy]
I know what we will be doin' in here, you want me to stay 'til the morning
Show me what you wanna know, baby-baby wanna rather know me
I know just what you be knowin' in here, you call me whenever you horny
I know how to treat you, so, baby, do no talkin', come and show me
Let me come through if I'm doin' it here, I'm goin', I'm goin', I'm goin'
Ooh, okay and I love how you doin' it, take you down to H-Town and I'm screwin' it
