The Howlin´ Wolf Story: The Secret History Of Rock And Roll (2003) (HQ)
The Howlin´ Wolf Story: The Secret History Of Rock And Roll (2003) (HQ) Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

Howlin' Wolf, aka Chester Burnett, came out of the deep south, out of the fields of Mississippi, out of a super-religious mother who stuck so firmly to her guns that Blues was "the devil's music" that she never spoke to her son for decades, out of racism and hardship, and made his own original, vibrant kind of music. He wasn't alone, as others like Muddy Waters came into prominence (and, according to a special feature on the DVD that should have been included with the rest of the doc, had a rivalry for some time), and shook up popular music first for black audiences and then slowly but firmly whites.

It's a remarkable journey, told with not a whole lot of style as a kind of direct-to-video approach, with a plethora of good facts and some humbling opinions (one of Wolf's closest musician friends and band-mates, Hubert Sumlin, provides the most entertaining anecdotes as a die-hard blues-man through and through). Plus, of course, the music, with some rare performances and even some home movies shot at Chicago clubs, of the Wolf's presence and magnetism coming out in strong forcefulness as he does crazy things on stage like lick his guitar and crawl on all fours. Whatever you want to say about his music it's inarguable that he doesn't get your attention, if only through that distinctive voice that's a sounds like it's been run-over and resurrected as an all-powerful bad-ass.

Thankfully, too, in such a short running time, there's a limit of how much drama there usually is in a musician-bio pic. Then again, Howlin' Wolf wasn't as naughty as other musicians: he didn't sleep around as a ladies's man (at least, from the doc's perspective, as much as say Muddy Waters), was a devoted husband and father, stayed away from drugs and most drink (he was so against it he openly criticized Son House during a performance), and only had his one real stinging problem being a lack of communication with his mother. While one wishes the movie was longer- more detailed, more infused with that pure air of rhythm and blues- what's here is enough to whet the appetite. At the least you'll want to put on some Wolf on the stereo right away or rush out to find some kind of record. He wasn't maybe the #1 best blues-man in America, but he certainly left his mark like only few others did. This doc is a good tribute to the Wolf's spirit.

Conway The Machine Rips Through Pusha T's "Diet Coke" Instrumental In L.A. Leakers Fr
Conway The Machine Rips Through Pusha T's "Diet Coke" Instrumental In L.A. Leakers Fr Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

Directed, filmed & edited by @atribecalledhiphop

Our Griselda family was strong in the building when Conway The Machine stepped through to deliver the latest installment of the coveted L.A. Leakers Freestyle series.

Conway is no stranger to the LIFTOFF freestyle caliber, with a 2019 appearance alongside Benny The Butcher and Rick Hyde, the Buffalo, New York native stormed through the Power 106 studios with artist Jae Skeese to rip up Freestyle 134. Trading verses over Pusha T's newest hit single "Diet Coke," Conway takes on the instrumental and says, "My success killing these n****s slowly / Gon' f*** around and turn me back into the old me / It's lonely at the top n****, and I'm the top n**** / Headliner, I'm the top biller."

Conway had nothing but gas for the L.A. Leakers feat. that he even doubled back before the clip's ending.

Millyz Drops 7 Minute Bars Over Drake's "Pound Cake" & 50 Cent's "Follo Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

Directed, filmed & edited by @atribecalledhiphop

Millyz is in the building and he pulled up for a double hitter in his first L.A. Leakers freestyle appearance!

Repping his High Level Rap movement, the Cambridge, MA native left no stone unturned when he took on two instrumentals for the Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk Power 106 series. First up, Millyz got a bit personal, expressing some life challenges and a recent bout with covid-19, over the Drake and Jay-Z-assisted "Pound Cake". The emcee also took it up a notch and flexed his bars with some freestyle time over 50 Cent's "Follow Me Gangsta."

In the nearly seven-minute freestyle, Millyz pulls out racks from his pockets and spits, "Ayo, f*** pleading the case, I'd rather speed in the Wraith / Gettin' neck on express and blowing weed to the face / Like 30 bands on me, picture what I keep in the safe / These Fear Of God sweats, but I'm still who the demons embrace."

Reign In Blood - The Slayer Story ┃ Documentary
Reign In Blood - The Slayer Story ┃ Documentary Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

On October 7th 1986, one of the most iconic records of a generation would send shockwaves through the music industry. It was such a controversial album, radio stations wouldn’t play it and Columbia Records refused to release it due to a song called Angel Of Death. Even when the record was released by Geffen, they refused to even put their logo on it.

#Slayer #ReignInBlood #Documentary

That album would be called Reign In Blood by Slayer. Arguably the most influential Thrash Metal band of all time. They’ve been attacked by religious groups, accused of being Satanic and faced a lawsuit that involved murder. Yet despite this, they are now a household name with 12 studio albums under their belt, millions of records sold worldwide and a legacy that will surely live on through the ages.

Slayers album covers alone were enough to trigger backlash from labels, parents, and Christian groups around the world, some of their song titles and lyrics would even have them pinned as Nazi sympathisers. We’ve seen similar stories about bands having links to Satanism when Black Sabbath arrived in 1968 and KISS in 1973 when people thought it was an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service. Slayer, however, played this to their advantage, they wanted to shock people, they wanted to stand out from the crowd, that’s exactly what they did and this is their story.

Please check out my Book "Shining The Light, Exposing The Truth" at http://www.shining-the-light.com exposing the Illuminati in the Music Industry, The New World Order, The Financial Institutions Corruption such as the World Bank and Federal Reserve, as well as Corrupt Politicians around the Globe in the pocket of the Illuminati...

It has been prophesied, over and over in the Bible. They will masquerade through this world as beacons of enlightenment, promising freedom and self-fulfillment to all who would listen to their message. Some are willing messengers of their Master's will, while others are unwitting victims themselves, fooled into believing that peace and prosperity can only come by uniting the world under one government.

It sounds so peaceful and loving. Governments and religions are coming together for the goal of bettering humanity. Humanitarian efforts are seemingly underway, under the guise of helping the poorest among us. It's no wonder that some of the kindest of us can fall prey to these lies. Some even turn to New Age religions in hopes of finding joy and harmony in the world. You've heard the propaganda at every level. From the brainwashing of our children, to the most popular entertainers of our time, even our Presidents have been known to serve the goals of the New World Order.

Unfortunately, the best among us can be deceived if we don't take a closer look. In this book, you will learn more about the Luciferian agenda. There are those amongst us who are actually serving a much darker power, while purporting to be messengers of light and hope. You will learn of some of the movements that have been shaping world politics and economics, and shifts in world religious thought. The influence of powerful occultists and dynasties of families can be traced back to very frightening origins.

dvsn: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

Nov. 19, 2018 | Sidney Madden -- When dvsn visited NPR for this Tiny Desk concert, it reminded me of the first time I saw them two years ago in New York City. They decided to wash the desk in vibrant blue, purple and orange lighting, brought in by dvsn's team to make the space feel like a concert hall. And while the audience at NPR was almost as densely packed as that NYC venue, it felt much like my live introduction to the group — grandiose in presentation, but at the same time, deliberately intimate in delivery.

With a four-piece band and three pristine backup vocalists for support, singer Daniel Daley flexed his falsetto pipes and a shiny gold grill, running through a sampler of fan-favorites about breaking up, making up and trying to move on. The short-and-sweet set is an example of the kind of audible acrobatics you don't often hear at contemporary R&B shows anymore.

Though it's easy to mistake dvsn as simply the stage moniker of Daley, the act is really a duo comprised of the singer and Grammy Award-winning producer Nineteen85, the (almost) secret weapon behind the boards. Together, the Toronto-based duo has released two albums so far — 2016's Sept. 5th and 2017's Morning After. And on the day of the Tiny Desk concert, while Daley gleamed in the spotlight behind dark shades, Nineteen85 hung back in the audience to, as always, play the role of humble maestro.

Larry June: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Larry June: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

This year, NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts — both from home and from behind our beloved Desk. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Bobby Carter | June 16, 2022
Larry June is the indie-rap hustle personified. His graduation from the streets has made way for his true purpose in rhyme: healthy living. The organic fruits and juices on the table in this performance indicate the lifestyle fervently pushed in his music. The two cell phones sitting beside him remind us that business is booming. He starts with a few signature adlibs before imploring, "Don't check me / Check the air quality." This lavish living room setting, with the Los Angeles night sky as a backdrop, sets the proper mood for Larry June's Tiny Desk (home) concert.

The Bay Area emcee has been at this for a while, adopting the independent approach like many before him: saturating the market with product and profiting from shows and merch. While much of the music industry stumbled and stalled during the uncertainty of 2020, Larry put up numbers, releasing half a dozen projects from his home studio. Here, he's able to comfortably sit back in the laid-back tone we're used to hearing on his records and not the dialed-up mood of his stage show. His band, The NME, replays and beefs up the sample on 2020's "Just me & you," plus songs from 2019's Out The Trunk and Early Bird.

In theory, a motivational rapper rapping about bike rides, hikes and investments would be deemed shtick in 2022 — yet he's here, authentic and refreshing. Good job, Larry.

Gary Clark Jr.: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Gary Clark Jr.: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

April 16, 2019 | Stephen Thompson -- Gary Clark Jr. had good reason to sweat. The blues-rock singer and guitarist opted to play his first-ever Tiny Desk concert — in front of a huge crowd that warmed the room considerably — while clad in a thick knit cap and heavy jacket. Plus, he'd brought his young son on tour with him and had to contend with a traditional parenting dilemma: How do you bring your kid to the office and still get work done?

But once Clark and his formidable band got done cranking out three songs from this year's blistering This Land, he wasn't the only one in the room who needed to wipe away the sweat. Clark's set leaned toward some of This Land's softer sentiments — "When I'm Gone" is about missing his family on the road, while "Pearl Cadillac" exudes gratitude for his mother's sacrifices — leaving its more politically incendiary material for louder live shows. But these songs still roared with the assurance and force of a showman at the top of his game.

Stevland Hardaway Morris (né Judkins; born May 13, 1950), known professionally as Stevie Wonder, is an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. A prominent figure in popular music during the second half of the 20th century, Wonder is one of the most successful songwriters and musicians. A virtual one-man band, his use of synthesizers and further electronic musical instruments during the 1970s reshaped the conventions of R&B. He also helped drive the genre into the album era, crafting his LPs as cohesive, consistent socially conscious statements with complex compositions. Wonder is often hailed as a "genius", and has been credited as a pioneer and influence to musicians of various genres including rhythm and blues, pop, soul, gospel, funk and jazz.

Blind since shortly after his birth, Wonder was a child prodigy known as Little Stevie Wonder, leading him to sign with Motown's Tamla label at the age of 11. In 1963, the single "Fingertips" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 when Wonder was 13, making him the youngest artist ever to top the chart. Wonder's critical success was at its peak in the 1970s. His "classic period" began in 1972 with the releases of Music of My Mind and Talking Book, the latter featuring "Superstition", which is one of the most distinctive and famous examples of the sound of the Hohner Clavinet keyboard. His works Innervisions (1973), Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974) and Songs in the Key of Life (1976) all won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making him the tied-record holder for the most Album of the Year wins, with three. He is also the only artist to have won the award with three consecutive album releases.

This video was made using all the audio and video sources that are available from multiple releases to create the most complete version of the show. The audio includes the entire concert with footage being used whenever available. For all the sections without footage, I've included a countdown to when the footage starts again. The only songs without any footage is Shakin' All Over and unfortunately the Abbey Hoffman Incident. The only footage not used is for Summertime Blues from the 1970 Woodstock Movie, as it gets the video blocked. So instead I've used the black and white footage for the song. All the audio and video sources played at different speeds to each other so as you can imagine, syncing everything up was a rather large task. But I'm happy with the final result.

SFJAZZ Collective: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
SFJAZZ Collective: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

Suraya Mohamed | August 10, 2022
How exciting to see so many all-star jazz greats performing together. The SFJAZZ Collective is a talented cohort of artists who perform arrangements of works by modern composers and also newly commissioned pieces by each member of the band.

In 2020, the Collective was scheduled to perform an in-person Tiny Desk concert, but it was canceled due to the pandemic. We are still working to make that happen — but in the meantime, let’s enjoy this uplifting Tiny Desk (home) concert, recorded in The Joe Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ, a large, sunny venue that serves as both a live performance space and as the Collective’s rehearsal space.

Earlier this year, the ensemble released New Works Reflecting the Moment (Live from the SFJAZZ Center 2021), an album addressing racial injustices, the ongoing pandemic and political polarization. In this concert, the musicians perform three songs from that project. “Ay Bendito” was written by tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, and its title is slang for “oh my God'' or “aw man”; it’s also subtitled “The Struggle Continues.”

Written to reflect the present moment, especially the isolation and social upheaval many of us continue to endure, “Mutuality” by tenor saxophonist Chris Potter was inspired by a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote that reads, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

Vocalist Gretchen Parlato’s “All There Inside '' was written with fellow SFJAZZ Collective vocalist Martin Luther McCoy in mind. Their voices fit together beautifully, and both the warm harmonies and the charming melody are the perfect foundation for Parlato’s inspiring message of hope and positive change: “Because it’s all there inside, all there inside of you.”

FKJ: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
FKJ: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

Nisha Venkat | July 7, 2022
Watching FKJ build a song is like watching him play a game of musical tetris. One second he's coaxing a rasping rhythm out of a drum set — the next, he's clambering over instruments to get to the mic before the beat kicks in.

The process might make you want to tape your eyes open. This is not Live Production 101, and FKJ (short for French Kiwi Juice, the stage name of Vincent Fenton) is not here to explain his genius. The French producer and multi-instrumentalist is perhaps best known for his assist on Masego's sultry, rollicking "Tadow," but there's only remnants of that energy here. This is new jazz: a synthy spectacle that's a treat for the ears and the eyes.

You get the sense – and Fenton confirms it – that he could spend all day tinkering in his studio. There's an ease to his motions when he grabs his guitar adding wah-wah sounds to his bassline on "IHM," and something very relatable about how even the cameraman struggles to keep up with his motions, sending Fenton in and out of focus.

Sometimes, he grimaces (with effort or with ecstasy, who knows) when he plucks a string just right. And you might be similarly moved. This has all the shivers of ASMR with all the emotive joy of a warehouse electronic fête. Maybe you'll even feel what I did when the music ended — a silence so large, so full, you'll want to tear down the screen and dance in the jungle with him.

Linda Diaz, 2020 Tiny Desk Contest Winner: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Presenting the 2020 winner of NPR's Tiny Desk Contest, Supported by State Farm

Oct. 5, 2020 || Linda Diaz -- Winning the Tiny Desk Contest has been a surreal experience for me, not only because it's a big, big honor, but because it's all happening in the midst of a global pandemic. Even just shooting my Tiny Desk (home) concert has been a wild ride: getting the band together, getting the NPR team together, figuring out how to shoot safely with everyone in New York City. At one point, we finally had everything set and ready to go. Then, days before the shoot, I tested positive for COVID-19. I will spare you all the details (lots of tears, lots of phone calls), but I am so grateful for my band, the NPR Music team and the Javits Center for going above and beyond for me, the human as much as me, the musician.

Even though I couldn't be at the Desk, I'm feeling lucky to have been able to share some extra little parts of my personality with my (home) concert. Like, how dope is it to be able to say that I'm not only the 2020 Tiny Desk Contest winner, but that we were the first musicians ever to perform on the top of the Javits Center?! In more ways than one, this concert is a victory and a dream come true for me.

Through this whole process, it has felt weird to be celebrating, but what has been reiterated time and again is that it is more than OK to be Black and celebrate and mourn and organize and rest and any other number of things. Black joy is radical because it actively opposes defeat. It is necessary.

Jeremy Dutcher: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Jeremy Dutcher: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert Hotney 3 意见 • 4 年 前

May 22, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- Jeremy Dutcher came to the Tiny Desk with sparkling, purple streams of glitter draped around his shoulders. Then he set his iPad on our Yamaha upright piano, not to read his score as pianists do these days, but to play a centuries-old wax cylinder recording of a song sung in the incredibly rare language of Wolastoq. Jeremy Dutcher, along with cellist Blanche Israel and percussionist and electronics wizard Greg Harrison, wove that old recording into a remarkably passionate performance that was very 21st-century, with a deep nod to a century past.

There is no one making music like this 27-year-old, classically trained opera tenor and pianist. He's not only a member of the Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Canada, but one of fewer than 100 people who still speak — and in his case also sing — in Wolastoq. His Tiny Desk performance illustrates his deep respect for his heritage, even as he sings through vocal processors and looping devices of the very present. It's a dialog with the past that earned him a Polaris prize for his 2018 album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (one of NPR Music's top albums of that year). But more importantly, he stresses awareness of a people nearly extinct, to a culture often too steeped in the present.

Watch this remarkably artful performance and take a moment to reflect on those who inhabited our recent past and remain a part of who we are.
